Goodbye 2016: Lemmy to George Michael – The Year the Music Died

By | December 31st, 2016|Categories: Audioholics|Tags: |

I know it’s ridiculous to blame the arbitrary goal posts in time we call a year for the loss of many beloved celebrities in 2016. And I’m certain our perception of 2016 as the grim reaper is skewed by a toxic mix of over-reporting, social media confirmation bias and the damned repetitiveness of hearing about yet another beloved celebrity’s death.

When critical analysis is applied to exactly how deadly 2016 was for celebrities, our current year fails to stand out. Stats presented by Snopes shows reporting of celebrity deaths by popular media outlets year-over-year, and there is no significant increase in 2016.

Apple might have a plan to keep your AirPods in your ears

By | December 31st, 2016|Categories: TechRadar|

You're not the only one worried about your brand new AirPods falling out of your ears during the morning jog – Apple has been thinking a lot about it too, as a patent recently published at Patently Apple shows.

The patent, which was filed back in the first half of the year, shows a strap that fits around the back of your ear to keep the AirPods in place. The two ends are also magnetically attracted to each other,  making it even less likely that the earbuds will jump out of place.… Read the full article

Review: Audioquest Niagara 7000, Elevating the Art of AC Power Conditioning

niagara

As audiophiles, we transfix on the transducer. We debate amplifiers; solid state or tube, and yearn for watts of power to provide absolute dynamics. We tweak every element of our audio systems … akin to building a race car to get every ounce of music out of the vinyl grooves or hi-resolution digital files.

But if this was Formula One, we would be putting the best fuel in that car, too. To ensure we get 100% of the performance, not 70, 80 or 90%. … Read the full article

2016 – Goodnight, I say

By | December 31st, 2016|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , |

Before we turn the light out on 2016, let’s briefly shine it on you, the reader. This site’s WordPress backend tells us that the number of page views jumped from a total of 1.9 million in 2015 to 2.6 million this year – a tidy 32% jump in in-bound traffic. Nice.

Those are the broad brushstrokes. In asking what really resonated with readers we look to DAR’s ten most read posts of the year:

  1. AudioQuest’s DragonFly Red puts high-end DAPs on notice [LINK]
  2. Audiophile-grade streaming with the AURALiC Aries Mini [LINK]
  3. How to enable aptX Bluetooth audio on your Macbook, iMac [LINK]
  4. Future-fi now: KEF’s LS50 Wireless active loudspeaker [LINK]
  5. Zesty and sweet – the stunning Schiit Gungnir Multibit DAC [LINK]
  6. CES 2016: AudioQuest mobilise DragonFly Black, Red USB DACs [LINK]
  7. Not as the artist intended: Google Chromecast Audio w/ Tidal [LINK]
  8. KEF LS50 loudspeakers w/ three budget amplifiers [LINK]
  9. Three (more) amplifiers for the KEF LS50, ELAC Uni-Fi UB5 [LINK]
  10. Go anywhere with AudioQuest’s DragonFly Black [LINK]

As one might expect, it’s the crossover products, those that build a bridge to mainstream that drew the most eyeballs: the Aries Mini, the LS50 (Wireless) and the Google Chromecast.

Here we come!

I was going to go.

Then, I wasn’t going to go.

Now, it’s official: I’m going to CES in Las Vegas.

I’ve never been, so please Vegas, be gentle on me.

I will be there with Brian Hunter of Audiohead renown from January 5th to the 9th. Apparently this is the mother of all shows in North America when it comes to tech, be it wearable or otherwise, so I’ll be checking out out some cool, new gear that I’ve not previously touched on.… Read the full article

Star Citizen 2.6 Review

By | December 31st, 2016|Categories: Sound + Vision|

Is it fair to review something that’s still in beta (alpha, even?). Since anyone can play it, and they’re still accepting money if you want to give it, I’d say yeah.

But I’ll clarify now this isn’t a judgement. This is the simplest definition of “review.” Perhaps “checking it out so you don’t have to” would be a better description.

So how goes the biggest crowdfunded project ever? It goes quite well, actually.

2016 Top Picks Of the Year

By | December 30th, 2016|Categories: Sound + Vision|

Peek back two years and read my intro for the 2014 Top Picks of the Year feature, and you’ll find me commenting on the advancement of LCD TVs and the growth of OLED; new competitors chasing after Sonos in the wireless multiroom arena; hi-res audio and vinyl continuing to surge; Atmos making its mark in the home theater market; and soundbars just getting generally better. Fast-forward to 2016, and my speech is about the same. But that hardly means we’ve stood still.

Marantz Introduces Premium 10 Series

Photo: Jana Dagdagan Marantz “brand ambassador” Ken Ishiwata Late last year, DMGlobal, the corporation that now owns Marantz (also Denon and Boston Acoustics), announced the new Marantz Premium 10 Series and arranged for members of the international press and other interested parties to visit its European headquarters in the Dutch city of Eindhoven to hear about—and just plain hear—the latest flagship electronics from the famed brand. The Reference Series, which debuted in 2003 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Saul Marantz’s first product, comprised a preamplifier (the SC-7), a monoblock power amplifier (the MA-9) and, appearing in 2006, an SACD …… Read the full article
