William Firebaugh’s original Well-Tempered Tonearm turned many heads – and ears – upon its’ debut in the mid-1980’s. The tonearm’s design was, and remains, quite radical by any way of reckoning. The followup Well-Tempered Turntable allowed WF to integrate his ideas on damping and resonance even further. Some may have been inclined to dismiss Firebaugh’s tonearm ideas as having “no bearing whatsoever” (pun intended), but enough audiophiles latched on, and gradually, a sort of cult following developed around these products.… Read the full article
Synergy Audio Visual has announced that it’s expecting a new version of the Rega Planar 3 to arrive in Australia in June. ‘This new model is a completely new turntable for 2016 and a significant departure from the last Rega Planar 3 model,’ said Phillip Sawyer, of Synergy Audio Visual, which distributes Rega in Australia. ‘Roy Gandy and his team took two years to develop this model, and it’s the first turntable release in this price bracket from Rega in five years.’
Gandy says that the main central bearing on this new Planar 3 has improved fit and construction, which reduces stress on the bearing itself.… Read the full article
I am the first to admit that I have not been steadfast and unwavering in my love. No. Instead, I have been anything but. I am unfaithful.
In fact, it’s probably fair to level this critique in rather stronger language: I am downright promiscuous.

Blackstar has been called David Bowie’s “death album” (several of its songs allude to death, he died of cancer two days after its release), but that makes it seem like a grisly novelty number when, in fact, it’s a masterpieceand, for purposes of this blog, a work of jazz-rock fusion that, unlike many stabs at the genre, truly fuses the two idioms, staying true to both, creating something new in the process, rather than watering them down in a muddy swamp.… Read the full article

I didn’t review any speakers this year, at least not in my own cave anyway. So my pick this year will be mostly what I heard and experienced from KLIAV 2015 show or other audio systems that I’ve had the opportunity to sample.
KEF LS50: Still the best value to performance small stand mount speaker. Super coherent in top to bottom octave presentation within it’s limited bandwidth. While it doesn’t go super low due to it’s physical limitations, whatever bass it produces is articulate, yet and clear and concise enough for most people.… Read the full article
