T+A PA 3000 HV and MP 3000 HV

I’ve been testing these two flagship T+A components for longer than any other review equipment in memory—over a year now, on and off. One reason is that they are so fascinating; in some ways they’re downright unbelievable. Another is that they are so comprehensive (especially the MP3000 HV music player) that there are seemingly infinite modes to evaluate. Throughout this odyssey, T+A has been gracious, helpful, and patient. (I offer my profound thanks to them for indulging me for so long.) During this extended evaluation period, my perspective on these two components has gone through several phases.… Read the full article

Mother of All Amplifiers: The SAE 2HP-D

By | March 31st, 2016|Categories: Sound + Vision|

Is your mouth watering yet? Mine was when I laid eyes on the 2HP-D, one of three amazing amplifiers that signal the return of Scientific Audio Electronics. Founded in 1967 by stealth designer Morris Kessler (see “15 Minutes with SAE Founder, Amp Guru Morris Kessler.”), SAE has always been synonymous with world-class amplification, which in Kessler’s view boils down to three key ingredients: reliability, accuracy, and freedom from noise. As he puts it, “Voltage and current must be available to satisfy the demands of the program material, and the amplifier itself cannot intrude on the user experience.”

Benchmark AHB2 Power Amplifier

benchmark_ahb2

Jason Kennedy has posted a review of the Benchmark AHB2 power amplifier (£3299) at Hi-Fi+. His conclusions:

“The AHB2 is a very impressive amplifier for its size and the it’s about the best compact power amp I have encountered. It seems fussier about speaker partnering than usual, however, and I would recommend trying it with your speakers before purchase. But the fact that it’s smaller and more efficient than most of the competition, and that it can bring the ‘electricity’ of the original recording into your living room makes it seem rather good value.”

Morris Kessler with his classic
SAE Mark 2 amplifier.

Even if you never heard his name you know his work.
