Legacy Audio / Raven Audio

In a rather large ballroom, Legacy was sporting several different system configurations.

The Legacy Aeris, actually my favorite of the line, was on display powered by a pair of Raven Audio 300B-based monoblocks, Metronome Transport, and Legacy Wavelet Preamp/DAC.

Legacy1

Another system setup featured the awesome little Legacy Studio HD speakers

Legacy2

Raven Audio’s extensive line(s) of tube electronics make for one heck of an awesome spread!

Legacy3 -RavenTable

Monitor Audio / Sim Audio

Monitor Audio was showing their huge and rather imposing Platinum II speakers to great effect.

Devialet Phantom Wireless Speaker System

By | April 30th, 2016|Categories: Ultra High End Review|Tags: , |

devialet_phantom

Tyll Hertsens has posted a review of the Devialet Phantom wireless speaker system ($4309-$5109) at Inner Fidelity. His conclusions:

“The Devialet Phantom is an extraordinary speaker system that does, it seems to me, fill a need for a designer/wife friendly speaker system for contemporary, up-scale home owners. But difficulties configuring the network environment make it very hard to recommend for anyone attempting to successfully install the system on their own without the significant expertise and time needed to do moderately advanced network configuration.”

Sonus faber Principia Collection

By | April 30th, 2016|Categories: AV Hub|

Italian loudspeaker manufacturer Sonus faber is introducing a new entry-level range it calls its ‘Principia’ collection in June. Pictured above is the smallest model in the range, the Principia 1.

This new line is designed for those who are seeking a simple hi-fi solution but with a definite Italian touch at an affordable price, all without giving up on perfect music reproduction,’ said Philip Sawyer, of Synergy Audio Visual, which distributes Sonus faber in Australia.

The Principia collection comprises two pairs of stand-mount/bookshelf loudspeakers, two pairs of floor-standers and a centre-channel.… Read the full article

Devialet Phantom (750Watt $1990; 3000Watt $2390; Dialog Hub $329)
Not long ago, a colleague here in the Stereophile Home Tech Group said to me, “Why do you bother reviewing Bluetooth speakers? There’s no such thing as a high-end Bluetooth speaker, right?”

Hmm…

On one level, I get it: A table-top Bluetooth speaker will never do what a killer floor-standing speaker in a big-rig is capable of. On the other hand, when I’m out on a motorcycle trip, camping in unusual places, or just want to listen on the back porch or in the garage, I’m not going to be bringing a complete stereo rig…but I still want something that sounds good.… Read the full article

Fun used record store finds

By | April 30th, 2016|Categories: ItisHifi - Vintage|Tags: |

I don’t buy too many used records these days as nice clean reissues are so plentiful. But I could leave these…
The cover of this 78box set was too much to pass up. This would be a 1940’s reissue as well as this History of Jazz 78 box set which includes a Leadbelly.

This is my favorite so far Sunny Ade and his African beats. This album is superb. I love the music of Nigeria from the 70’s. It is bad ass.… Read the full article

KBL Sound Zodiac Cable Loom

By | April 30th, 2016|Categories: Ultra High End Review|Tags: , |

kblsound_zodiacinterconnect

Wojciech Pacula has posted a review of the KBL Sound Zodiac interconnects (~€750), speaker cables (~€1475), and power cord (~€925) at High Fidelity. His conclusions:

“Zodiac line offers certain qualities, certain sonic character. What they have to offer is highly sought by experienced audiophiles who are not impressed by very fast and detailed cables that lack richness, especially in lower midrange and bass range. Among these cables it is interconnect the offers the richest, densest, almost ‘sticky’ sound. It also brings presentation closer to the listener, closer than speaker cable does.”

Audio Alto DMI 3H Integrated Amplifier

audioalto_dmi3h

Wojciech Pacula has posted a review of the Audio Alto DMI 3H integrated amplifier (€4380 plus VAT) at High Fidelity. His conclusions:

“Audio Alto delivers amazingly clear, pure sound which makes noticing all differences particularly easy. Spacing, especially considering the price range and solid-state design, is impressive. Just as the design itself is.”

RT Audio Design Orpheus MkII Power Amplifier

rtaudiodesign_orpheusmkii

Wojciech Pacula has posted a review of the RT Audio Design Orpheus MkII (~€750) at High Fidelity. His conclusions:

“This amplifier offers simply beautiful sound. But its bass doesn’t go very deep, is not particularly well controlled and it is rather warm. But it’s tonality, and spacing is wonderful – it creates an impression of a bubble, without clearly defined contour, that listener sits in. Micro-dynamics is remarkable, macro is definitely not that good.”

CEASE AND DESIST – RETRACTION

By | April 30th, 2016|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , |

Following my participation and attendance at the 2016 AXPONA Show, I wrote several posts reporting on a series of power demos held in room 450 by the high-end cable company Nordost of Holliston, MA. This morning I opened a FEDEX letter containing a 7-page “CEASE AND DESIST LETTER”. It describes and quotes from the articles that I posted. Per the DEMAND contained in the document written by attorney Rodney E. Gould, I have removed the original posts.

The letter also demands a retraction “prior to the institution of litigation”.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2016: Classic Audio Loudspeakers stays on the path

AXPONA-Classic-0212

axponaOne of the most enjoyable things about covering the high-end industry is meeting the fascinating people who somewhere along the way got the crazy notion this actually could be their business.

These days, two-channel audio is not quite so much a road less traveled as it is an overgrown deer trail through the wilderness. You need a lot of courage and determination to follow what’s left of it.

Still, this quest continues to attract some of the kindest and most talented individuals you’d ever want to meet.… Read the full article
