Updated: Why Apple buying Tidal makes sense

Apple is reportedly in talks to buy Tidal, the music streaming service run by iconic rapper Jay Z.

Unnamed sources familiar with the matter tell the Wall Street Journal the talks are ongoing and may not result in a deal. A Tidal spokesperson denies the company is in talks with Apple.

But if discussions are taking place, why would Apple want to buy Tidal when it has its own Apple Music subscription service already? By all accounts, Apple Music isn’t doing too badly for itself.… Read the full article

Roon Ready comes to Bryston BDP-1, BDP-2

In the network audio ecosystem that is Roon, the remote tells the server (aka Core) which audio to push to the Roon endpoint, when to stop pushing, when to skip to the next track or when to play something different, even from Tidal.

The most affordable Roon endpoint are the Apple TV and Apple Airport Express. In saving coin, users are saddled with Airplay audio transmission. To play hi-res audio and/or feel the benefit of Roon’s own asynchronous RAAT protocol, a Roon Ready endpoint is required, so called because it has been officially certified by Roon’s own tech team.

Music in the Round #79

The SOtM sMS-1000SQ Windows Edition with AudiophileOptimizer and Roon: Not only does that very long name require finger-twisting shifts between upper and lower case, it really doesn’t tell you what the sMS-1000SQ WE is.

Korean manufacturer SOtM, Inc. describes it on their website as a “music server based on Windows Server OS besides the original Linux [Vortexbox] OS based sMS-1000SQ.” I’d describe it as a Windows-based PC that’s designed and optimized to manage a database of music files and stream the music to local or networked DACs, and that supports multiple options for file management, playback, and target devices.… Read the full article

Listening #163

One
Everything makes a difference. Everything. File that away.

Two
There are two kinds of good sound: good sound sound and good music sound. While I could describe the distinction in few words or many, it’s easier to point to two recordings of Elgar’s oratorio The Dream of Gerontius: by Sir Adrian Boult and the New Philharmonia Orchestra, with tenor Nicolai Gedda singing the title role (2 LPs, EMI SLS 987); and by Malcolm Sargent and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, with Heddle Nash in the lead (2 LPs, EMI RLS 709).… Read the full article

Is Apple keeping you from the best Spotify experience possible?

Music streaming service Spotify claims Apple is intentionally making difficult to update its iPhone app and holding back new features.

The updated app reportedly avoids Apple’s payment system altogether, which is permitted, but Apple doesn’t allow the use of an alternative payment system within the app.

Spotify sent a letter to Apple’s top lawyer this week, bashing the iPhone maker for its anti-competitive business model. The letter, sent by Spotify general counsel Horacio Gutierrez to Apple’s legal representative Bruce Sewell, blasted Apple for its App Store subscription limitations, according to Recode.… Read the full article

“Put the Prisms in a midsized or smaller room, mate them with decent electronics and a good subwoofer, and they will deliver the musical goods in that natural and articulate way that Joseph Audio loudspeakers are known for, but at a more affordable price than ever before.”
