Blast from the past…

Blast from the past…

Painting listening room three, and playing Tetris in my head as to where everything is going to go, etc., etc., I subconsciously pick John Klemmer’s Touch on TIDAL and wonder where has the time gone? Back in 1979, when I was painting the walls in my first apartment, this was the record I bought on the way home from the hardware store, with a few gallons of bright white paint in the trunk.

The system was different then: A pair of ESS AMT-1 towers, a Phase Linear 400 and a Nakamichi 600 series preamplifier (along with a Technics SL-1200 TT) were my pride and joy.

David Chesky's Dazzling, Dancing Spanish Poems

By | April 30th, 2017|Categories: Stereophile|

David Chesky’s The Spanish Poems packs a lot of infectious, dance-like energy into a three-song, 24/48 (or 16/44.1) download. Available at a price commensurate with its 21:28 length, the short cycle sets “The Girl from Guatemala” by José Marti (1853–1895), Sonnet No.5 by Garcilaso De la Vega (1501–1536), and “The Romance of Love” by an unknown author. All dance away in a catchy style that makes ample use of bells, triangle, and other high-pitched percussion instruments. Played by Chesky’s pick-up Orchestra of the 21st Century, they are sung in English by the versatile, technically triumphant soprano, Maureen McKay.… Read the full article

Pioneer’s Smallest Hi-Res Portable

By | April 30th, 2017|Categories: AV Hub|

Pioneer’s latest high-res portable, the XDP-30R, is its smallest and most affordable yet.

Measuring only 63×94×15mm (WHD) the XDP-30R (which is in some countries is called the ‘Private’) is fitted with both a standard 3.5mm unbalanced headphone jack and a 2.5mm four-pole balanced output jack. Thanks to twin two ESS Sabre ES9018C2M DACs, the new XDP-30R can support up to 5.6MHz DSD native playback and up to 192kHz/32-bit  FLAC/WAV playback. It can also upscale compressed audio and streaming audio files, which Pioneer claims results in an improvement in perceived audio quality from these lo-res file types.… Read the full article

KLIPSCH 71st Anniversary And Pilgrimage In HOPE, AR

By | April 30th, 2017|Categories: ItisHifi - Vintage|Tags: , , |

This years pilgrimage was extra special. It started a day early in the Klipsch factory with the founding of Klipsch Heritage Museum Association or KHMA and the donation of the old factory with all artifacts included from Voxx and Klipsch. This was very generous and special as John Shalam founder of Voxx and Paul Jacobs current Klipsch CEO attended and gave speeches. I can honestly say Klipsch is in good hands with these men at the healm.  Klipsch is one of the few speaker companies with production facilities still in America.… Read the full article

I’m back from Chicago. The 2017 edition of the AXPONA is behind me and will most likely be the last time I assemble a real high-resolution, surround music system. We were unique in offering a room that provided high-resolution, surround music. While there were other rooms with multichannel playback — including Dolby Atmos systems — they played movies not music. I’ve read a couple of online reports that gave “Best of Show” nods to other surround rooms by authors that didn’t experience our room.… Read the full article

NF Audio might not ring a bell yet. As of now, Chinese CIEM brands are not quite popular in the international hifi scene. But NF is hoping to change all that.

宁梵 Ning Fan is the first Chinese CIEM manufacturer to trigger my interest. The company was only founded in 2014 and is based in Shenzhen, close to Hong Kong’s border.… Read the full article

Review: Clones Audio HOST Music Server

By | April 30th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

by John Grandberg

“It’s hard when you’re stuck upon the shelf.” So sang Eddie Vedder on “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town”, circa 1993. While I’m reasonably confident he wasn’t referring to audio gear, the idea does seem to apply to one poor component in my setup – the little PC I built to handle Roon Server duties. Since I now base nearly all of my listening around Roon, this particular device is a critical link in my chain.… Read the full article

HiFiMAN HE-1000 V2 Headphone Review

Following seven years of research and development, the
HiFiMAN HE-1000 headphones were released as part of the world’s first in
nanometer-thickness diaphragm technologies. With a sound to match, this has earned
the company a CES 2016 Innovation Award which propelled HiFiMAN as a serious
contender in the arena of hi-fi offerings. Hot in pursuit of this welcomed
accolade, the company released an updated version of their planar-magnetic
flagship – this time, touted the HiFiMAN HE-1000 V2.

Much like its predecessor, the V2 presents the same
underlying design as the V1.

AXPONA 2017: Melodic Love Affairs

By | April 30th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

By Eric Franklin Shook

When you are in love, a lot of things outside of your relationship begin to fall in and out of focus. Senses become attuned your lover and often begin over analyzing the situation. Never has so much sagacious power been abandoned, leaving you without reasoning and the rest of the world in your wake. You are a now a slave to flow of heart beats. Nothing else matters. It’s just you and this love.

I’ve had this similar experience with music, and I guess this is what makes me an audiophile.… Read the full article
