Vaughan Williams: Job. Symphony No. 9

Vaughan Williams: Job. Symphony No. 9

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Job was inspired by a set of early 19th-century illustrations by William Blake. The composer was developing a distinctively English style of ballet, and the music includes aristocratic dance forms from the Tudor era such as the pavane, galliard, and saraband. But Job is no benign entertainment of nostalgic nationalism. The work is thoroughly modern in its psychological depth and dramatic power, presenting the familiar story of a man whose faith is severely tested. The music is vividly programmatic, as with the monumental climax that comes when the protagonist finally curses God.… Read the full article

Thiel CS1 loudspeaker

By | September 7th, 2017|Categories: Stereophile|

As the out-of-band rejection is then only 6dB/octave, it places demands on his chosen drive-units to be well-behaved, not only in their passbands, but also outside of them.… Read the full article

Perfectionist Audio Components CPR IIIB/TIPS preamplifier

By | September 7th, 2017|Categories: Stereophile|

I was getting pretty tired of listening for sonic differences among preamps, and I told JA that I’d prefer my next reviewing assignment to be something different, like a speaker or a power amp. He agreed, but said he’d first like me to review just one more preamp, the Perfectionist Audio CPR/TIPS, which had been waiting patiently in the review queue in Santa Fe.… Read the full article

Magico S3 Mk II Loudspeaker

When Magico, LLC announced the imminent introduction of the S3 Mk II loudspeaker late last year, it wasn’t exactly shocking news. After all, two other members of Magico’s S Series, the S1 and the S5 models, had been updated to Mk II status and the top-of-the-series S7 already incorporated the diamond-coated beryllium tweeter and nanographene midrange cone that represent Magico’s latest thinking on driver design. So, the important changes seen with the S3 Mk II—compared to the original S3, which first shipped in early 2014—parallel those found in the new S1 Mk II, reviewed in Issue 270.… Read the full article
