Dynaudio Sub 6

By | September 18th, 2017|Categories: AV Hub|

Dynaudio has released a new Sub 6 subwoofer with ‘intelligent’ digital signal processing that comes pre-programmed to integrate perfectly with main speakers from Dynaudio’s range.

Dynaudio’s engineers painstakingly modelled the acoustic characteristics of its most popular high-end hi-fi speakers and created custom performance maps for each one,’ said George Poutakidis, of BusiSoft, which distributes Dynaudio in Australia. ‘Using its display and menu system built into the Sub 6, owners simply select the specific Dynaudio main speakers they have in their setup and the Sub 6’s output will be matched perfectly to it, so two-way speakers seamlessly become three-ways, and three-way speakers seamlessly become four-ways.Read the full article

With Great Respect…

Cleaning the closets a bit today, I ran across the first issue of The Absolute Sound.

From Sping of 1973. Damn, I’m getting old. I remember reading it at my neighbor, longtime friend, and sometime TONEAudio contributor Todd Sageser’s house. I used to look at the mighty Phase Linear 700 amplifier on the shelf, with its gigantic, glowing, power output meters in the mall at Schaak Electronics and wonder what it would be like to have that much power.

Compensation Curve for InnerFidelity Measurements Dialog Part 1

By | September 18th, 2017|Categories: Innerfidelity|

New InnerFidelity headphone compensation curve.

First and foremost I want to thank each and every person who commented on my initial Compensation Curve for InnerFidelity Measurements post. An InnerFidelity target curve should be considered journalism and not quite science, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be juried by peers. So I very much appreciate and take very seriously you comments about this curve. Thank you.

One thing I need to say right off the bat is that the graph tool will have the ability to select one of a number of compensation curves to apply, so you won’t be stuck with the InnerFidelity curve I’m developing.… Read the full article

LP Gear Vessel R3SV Cartridge

By | September 18th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , |

When the final rays of light faded from the horizon on what was widely perceived as the twilight of analog playback in this hobby, there was a tragic loss of cartridge manufacturers and their parts suppliers. In those days, the high point of cantilever technology had been realized, and the stylus assembly mass of cartridges had been pushed to astonishingly small numbers. This reduction in mass resulted in improved tracking, quicker transient response, and finer resolution of detail. In those days cartridge manufactures offered designs with cantilevers made from beryllium, hollow tube gemstone or boron, and even combinations of titanium and diamond coating.… Read the full article

Carl Schuricht conducts Beethoven and Bruckner

The first recording I ever bought of Beethoven Symphonies was the Decca Eclipse LP of the 1st and 2nd played by the Vienna Philharmonic under Carl Schuricht. I knew nothing about him except that the reviews all said that they were fine performances, so I bought them. I have never regretted that decision in nearly forty five years and when the Icon box set was released, I knew I had to have it.

The orchestra on this set is the Paris Conservatoire and although not the Vienna Phil they give Schuricht everything he wanted and the set has always been highly prized.

Listening again to these taut, brisk but very musical performances I can only wish that they were all in stereo (all but the 9th Symphony are in mono), the strange thing is that at the same time a French conductor Cluytens was making a set with the Berlin Philharmonic.… Read the full article

Sony NW-WM1Z Portable Player and MDR-Z1R Headphones

Sony NW-WM1Z Portable Player and MDR-Z1R Headphones

Sony has been creating cost-no-object “flagship” components since early in its history. And while never intended as big-sellers, these models have often provided benchmarks for future, more affordable designs. The new Sony NW-WM1Z portable player ($3199) and MDR-Z1R headphones ($2299) are two of Sony’s latest top-echelon portable audio devices. This review will look at each product individually and then as a unified system. While not perfect for everyone’s needs (nor are they meant to be), the NW-WM1Z and MDR-Z1R boast several unique technical accomplishments that make them special and noteworthy—not to mention their top-end sonic performance.… Read the full article
