New TechDAS Air Force V Turntable Debuts at Tokyo International Audio Show

By | September 29th, 2017|Categories: Analog planet|

TechDAS introduced the new Model V turntable at the Tokyo Audio Show 2017. Like the more expensive Ar Force turntables, the new compact turntable features an air bearing, vacuum hold-down platter. Unlike the more costly TechDas turntables the Model V does not feature an outboard motor, nor does it include a suspension system.

I have always seen Samson products all over the place especially in pro audio/ musical instrument stores but have never given any serious thought of buying anything with this brand name due to either being so much more inexpensive than the competition with certain products or just a sheer lack of hype in audiophile circles.

I think that common human trait of disregarding inexpensive things and automatically thinking that they are inferior is typical but I think I may have to rethink things if this turns out to be any good.… Read the full article

Download of the Week: Chelsea Wolfe

By | September 29th, 2017|Categories: Audiostream|

Back in 2012, Mr. “Weird New Pop” sent me an email with a link to Chelsea Wolfe’s Bandcamp page. The subject line read “Mmm”. Back in 2015, Mr. “Monthly Spins” sent me an email which read (in part), “I was just listening to that new Chelsea Wolfe album Abyss and thought it was something you might like.” They were right.

Cecile McLorin Salvant, Dreams and Daggers

By | September 29th, 2017|Categories: Stereophile|

It was almost exactly a year ago that I first heard Cecile McLorin Salvant at the Village Vanguard. I came home and wrote a blog for this space, wondering how I could have missed her ascent (she’d already won a Grammy and other prizes) and deeming her the best jazz singer around, standing among the greats of all time. I went back to see her, dragging along my wife and two friends, the following Sunday—the late set, the final set of his week-long stint—and she was better still.… Read the full article

Most, if not all, have been awarded an Audiophilia Star Component Award. This is no small feat considering our editorial protocols and as each was reviewed by different staff with varying styles and tastes. No other audio company has received such uniform accolades in these virtual pages.

The brains behind all this audio goodness is Mark Jenkins, CEO and designer at Antipodes Audio.… Read the full article

2017 Golden Ear Awards: Robert E. Greene

2017 Golden Ear Awards: Robert E. Greene

Graham Audio LS5/9 loudspeaker $6999 During the heyday of its speaker development program in the 1960s and 70s, the BBC had an opportunity to design speakers using direct comparisons to live music, including orchestral music, in a way never equaled before or since. Not surprisingly, the principles established then have stood the test of time. In the intervening decades, driver technology has progressed, and the Graham Audio “reissue” of the BBC LS5/9 has a modern bass/mid driver, developed by Volt specifically for this new model, as well as the latest version of the tweeter.… Read the full article

Soundtracks Series Vol. 5: Wayne Garcia’s Top 10

Soundtracks Series Vol. 5: Wayne Garcia's Top 10

In 1970 I was a 13-year-old hippie wannabee when the Woodstock movie and soundtrack were released. Naturally, I was hooked from the start. Here was the perfect dreamed-of escape from lame suburbia—lots of great music, skinny-dipping hippie chicks, plenty of pot and acid. Plus, it was all so relatively innocent (most especially compared with the horrors that would occur just a few months after Woodstock—and an hour from where I lived—at the Altamont Speedway in Northern California’s East Bay hills). From that moment on I developed a thing for concert films that captured not only the bands and their music, …… Read the full article

Mini-Review: Shinola Audio Bookshelf Speakers

By | September 29th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

by John Richardson

You’d almost have to be labeled an old-fashioned Evil Pinkie Communist (think Boris and Natasha from the Bullwinkle cartoons…) not to like and admire what the folks at Shinola are doing. At first glance, this young and innovative company that makes lots of cool stuff seems like a Hipster dream come true — it’s all about the caché, not quality. Those who hold such an opinion? They need to take a closer look. Shinola, which is a re-branding, at least name-wise, of the company that used to make shoe and boot polish, is the real deal.… Read the full article
