By | February 28th, 2018|Categories: Wall of sound|Tags: , , , , , |

By Steve Graham

There are few things more frustrating and potentially challenging than trying to eliminate unwanted noise.  I had intended to pass on some of the knowledge I’d gained setting up the K&K Premium SUT in that review, but ran out of space.  Here then is the promised troubleshooting guide.  Hopefully what I’ve learned can help others.

I know what you’re thinking: Yawn, another boring trip to the land of audio minutiae courtesy of that old geezer at Wall of Sound. … Read the full article

PS Audio's Paul McGowan talks about DACs, Speakers, and Why “Code” is a Necessary 4-Letter Word

By | February 28th, 2018|Categories: Stereophile|

My wife came into my office and saw Paul McGowan, she said “he seems familiar”.

After all these years she somehow recalled Paul from our B&K connection. My Wife and Sylvia ( our British Partner’s Wife) ran our Business office and Judy recalled Paul’s voice from 1982,3,4 era. His Voice ! after all these years.

Of course it’s Pauls “voice” and the way he phrases his thoughts that make him Unforgettable.

She sat and watched and remembered all the circumstances of our lives back then : Paul brought Memory Lane to my Office for my Wife .… Read the full article

Machine Head: Head In The Right Place

By | February 28th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

Robb Flynn says Machine Head’s new album looks to the band’s early days in order to charge into the future. By Peter Hodgson.

Now is the perfect time for Machine Head. Their politically and socially aware lyricism, their never-say-die attitude, their crushing heaviness – it’s all there on new album Catharsis (out January 26th via Nuclear Blast), and it’s all informed by the upheaval in Washington and across the USA since the election of a certain orange-haired president. Frontman Robb Flynn has said that this album could “really infiltrate the mainstream” with its more direct song structures and simpler hooks.… Read the full article

Campfire Cascade
Campfire Audio, primarily known for their hand built IEMs, debuted the Cascade ($799), their first headphone(!), which uses 42mm beryllium PVD diaphragm dynamic drivers in a compact, closed back design. The Cascade features aluminum cups, stainless steel components, and sheepskin ear pads. From my limited listening session at CanJam, I found the Cascade to be very comfortable, with rich mids and a fun V shaped sound signature.

In this video, Ken Ball, Campfire’s CEO, unboxes the Cascade, demonstrates the custom fit acoustic dampeners, and discusses the challenges of making their first headphone!… Read the full article

MK Sound S-150 THX Price Slashed

By | February 28th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

One of M&K Sound’s longest-running and most popular models recently received a total update—drivers, crossover, cabinet tuning and construction. Since taking over MK Sound distribution in Australia, Indi Imports has slashed all the prices of MK Sound speakers and subwoofers, so we expect this new model—the S-150 THX—will also benefit from a considerable price reduction. Indi has yet to announce an Australian price, but in the US it sells for $US2,299.

The S-150 THX uses three high-quality 25mm polymer-coated silk soft-dome, ferro-fluid cooled dual-magnet tweeters aligned in a vertical array, that are positioned directly alongside two 133mm-diameter mineral-filled polypropylene coned bass/midrange drivers that have dual-magnet cast basket woofers.… Read the full article

Performance
Sound

Ah, the ’70s—the literal age of excess, as documented by the “everything, all the time” lifestyle credo personified by pop-music superstars like the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. And yet, amidst all that glamour, glitz, and high drama also resided some damn fine music, too. Listen closely, and you’ll clue into a good bit of prescient social commentating by artists very much aware of the pitfalls of their experimentations, even while they basked in the afterglow.
