Oracle Audio Swings For the Middle Deck With the Origine MkII Turntable

By | August 1st, 2018|Categories: Analog planet|

Best known for its sexy looking Delphi turntable first introduced in 1979 and currently in its MK VI iteration ($8850), Canada-based Oracle Audio recently updated its lowest priced Origine turntable to MKII status.

The upgraded version includes a new “wall-wart” powered 16V AC synchronous motor (the original was 24V AC—customers with that motor can get a free upgrade, paying for shipping one way) and a new silicon damped cueing mechanism replacing the original’s “direct action” cueing system (which for original Origine owners can be upgraded for $85).

Vivid Audio Giya G1 Spirit Loudspeaker

The original Vivid Giya G1 debuted at CES 2008 with a launch party at the Mirage held by Philip O’Hanlon of On a Higher Note, then the U.S. importer, and I was fortunate enough to attend. With design and business offices in the UK, and manufacturing facilities in South Africa, Vivid Audio represents the latest conceptual realizations of designer Laurence Dickie. You may recognize the name, as Dickie is the designer of one of the most iconic loudspeakers ever created, the Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus.… Read the full article

My new reference loudspeaker—Alta Audio Celesta FRM-2

Several years ago, I experienced Mike Levy’s original loudspeaker design, the FRM-1s, at a well attended CES. The sound was wonderful but the design was hamstrung somewhat, needing four channels of amplification and DEQX room calibration.  Score one for the sound, but zero for the needs of everyday audiophiles.

For more than a few years after the show, Levy received requests to modify the speaker to a standard two channel amplification design so the beautiful sound could be enjoyed by all. Well, maybe not all, at $15,000 (plus stands), but the thoughts were pure.

A little history

For context, I’ll quote from Martin Appel’s Audiophilia review of the FRM-2s for the start of the story.… Read the full article

Sonos Goes Public With $100 Million IPO

By | August 1st, 2018|Categories: Audioholics|Tags: |

Since Sonos introduced its first voice-controlled speaker, the Sonos One, toward the end of 2017, the company has been busy defending its position as a leader in multi-room audio. As competition from tech giants like Amazon and Apple has encroached upon territory once dominated by Sonos, the addition of voice control has allowed the pioneering company to remain current. Its newest speaker, the Alexa-enabled Sonos Beam sound-bar, was just released on July 17th and has enjoyed positive reviews. The company is also working with Ikea to design a new line of speakers that will fit “seamlessly and almost invisibly into everyday life,” according to the official Sonos blog.
