Review: Spendor D7 Loudspeakers

“Slim Fast”

by Steve Graham

Loudspeakers are sometimes tough to wrap your ears around.  Switching from one speaker to another often requires a re-orienting, or more precisely, a re-tuning of one’s audio sensibilities.  The traits of one speaker versus another are often immediate and jarring.  Changing amps or source components can, unless something is seriously amiss, require concentration to perceive differences.

So it was with the Spendor D7, compared to my PSB T8 speakers. But it didn’t take long to realize that the Spendors were something special. … Read the full article

Xavian Perla Esclusiva

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

Czech manufacturer Xavian has released a new version of the Perla, which it says has become its best-selling design following its release in 2015. The new model is the Perla Esclusiva.

The Xavian Perla Esclusiva is a two-driver, two-way bass reflex design using a 150mm ‘AudioBarletta’ bass/midrange driver (said to be custom-made in Italy to designer Robert Barletta’s specifications) which uses a polypropylene cone with a soft dustcap and a diecast chassis and a 26mm soft dome tweeter, also said to be unique to Xavian, having been built in Italy to Barletta’s specification.… Read the full article

Dynaudio Sub 3 Subwoofer Review & Test

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

Expert review and test of the Dynaudio Sub 3 Subwoofer by Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. Free pdf download included.

Dynaudio’s brand-new Sub 3 replaces the identically-sized Sub 250 in this Danish company’s line of powered subwoofers. Given that the Sub 250 was such a popular model, I wondered why this model hadn’t just been upgraded and called a Sub 250 MkII or some similar name. It turns out that the Sub 3 came about because the company’s engineers were working on trying to develop a smaller and lower-priced version of the Dynaudio Sub 600.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: The Audio Company, Von Schweikert, VAC, Esoteric and The Big Why

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Each time I’ve visited the Von Schweikert rooms at hi-fi shows over the last few years, Damon Von Schweikert and Leif Swanson have upped the ante in terms of presentation, sound and most importantly, the WOW Factor. First of all, I’m not damning them with faint praise, as if back in the day their exhibit rooms were only so-so and they’ve gotten much better. No, we’re talking about a duo who wins award after award, best-in-shows, all the marbles. The fact that they keep outdoing themselves is perhaps troublesome for their competitors, but outstanding for the industry.… Read the full article

Rocking Rockville: Late Day One and Early Day Two

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: Stereophile|

Listening to music in the Emia Labs room was one of those moments when I was reminded of how very little I know—that and how distressingly easy it has become for me to acclimate to different levels of audio goodness when confronted with different levels of build quality and design ingenuity. Earlier in my first day at Capital Audiofest 2018, I had heard other things I had thought were very good—and they were, in their way. But listening through the Emia system to recordings I know well—especially LP reissues from the Electric Recording Company, which co-sponsored the Emia room—was an experience far in advance of most.… Read the full article

There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here at Capital Audiofest … okay, okay, — I don’t know how many brands exactly, but it does seem like a lot this year. Which makes 2018’s event feel every bit like the “premier show of North America’s eastern coast”, that we often claim it to be. Fear not, as the rag-tag band of misfits from Part-Time Audiophile are here to be your surrogate audio show guide.

Here are some surefire rooms to get you started off on the right foot.Read the full article

CD Review: Justin Courtney Pierre – In The Drink

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

JUSTIN COURTNEY PIERRE
In The Drink
EPITAPH / COOKING VINYL

The debut solo album from one of pop‑rock’s most inimitable voices is short, sweet and, in true Justin Courtney Pierre style, ridiculously fun. The ex-Motion City Soundtrack frontman dives deep into his nostalgic influences, hints of everything from Weezer to Pavement shining through in this ‘90s power-pop fever dream.

And though fans of MCS will find that Pierre still plays to a lot of his old strengths, there’s a newfound looseness to the way he throws youthful hooks, gurgling basslines and lashings of crumbly distortion at the wall; like he’s not trying as hard to impress us, but by proxy, impressing us more than those last few pre-hiatus records did by a long stretch.… Read the full article
