Dave Brubeck Time In

ORG Music, ORGM 1040, LP $27.99, available everywhere

For a guy who has owned umpteen copies of Time Out over the years, everything from an early pressing to one of those JVC Super Bit-Mapped CDs to the latest LP remastering from Analogue Productions, my record collection is suspiciously devoid of Dave Brubeck records. Other than a couple of almost-unplayable LPs snapped up at Goodwill, I got nothing. There’s no particular reason for this, other than “so many records, so little time.”

I’ve been fortunate, however, to land on ORG Music’s mailing list, and I’ve been thunderstruck at all the great LPs I’m now getting.… Read the full article

The Top Five Best Albums to use for reviewing hifi gear… or not.

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: Audiostream|

I often get asked what music I use when I’m assessing components for review, so I thought it was time to commit to page space a small fraction of the many albums I call upon or discover in the course of reviewing gear.

HTC Exodus 1: The Off-Grid Blockchain Jesse Ventura of Smartphones

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: Audioholics|Tags: |

Mention the word blockchain and most people immediately think of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. But while they share a common history, they’re totally distinct ideas. It’s reminiscent of going back to the early days of the Internet in the early 90s and explaining the difference between the Internet itself (blockchain) and email (Bitcoin). But like the early Internet, blockchain is maturing into a powerful, multi-purpose platform with capabilities well beyond Bitcoin or even cryptocurrency itself. Enter the HTC Exodus 1, the first effort from a major phone manufacturer to create a blockchain and crypto-friendly handset.… Read the full article

T.H.E. Show, Capitol Studios, ATC and Legacy Audio

It was another audio event at the famed Capitol Studios in LA, but hanging out in studio A in the heart of Hollywood with high profile producers and audiophiles on a Friday night IS my idea of an evening well spent. This time around the big studio room was hosted by the Los Angeles hifi show “T.H.E. Show” (The Home Entertainment Show) and featured a 5 person panel of talent that included 3 producer/mixer/engineers and two loudspeakers manufacturers.

Aside from social niceties and an open bar, attendees were treated to a hour-long panel that spanned the nuances of both the production and reproduction sides of the audiophile coin.… Read the full article

AirPods 2 leak hints at Bluetooth 5.0 and new biometric sensors

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: TechRadar|

The Apple AirPods 2 have been tough to pin down. Sure, we’ve seen a number of leaks over the last six months – including information around potential waterproofing and noise-cancellation features – but none that has originated from an official source.

That all changed today, when the Apple AirPods 2 passed SIG Bluetooth Certification, a requisite for any device that includes Bluetooth before it comes to market.

The listing on SIG's website was first noticed by MySmartPrice, an India-based tech publication, and it not only confirms the existence of Apple’s next-gen true wireless earbuds, but also gives us some key details.… Read the full article

Saturday Afternoon at Capital Audiofest

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: Stereophile|

Of the three systems I heard at CAF 2018 that had been assembled by retailer Tenacious Sound—I think there were eight in all—the one that sang through a pair of TAD ME-1 loudspeakers ($14,995/pair) was the most impressive. I requested some Richard Thompson, and my guitar-pickin’ friend Lenny Mayeaux, whose day job is with manufacturer Audience AV, put on “Vincent Black Lightning.” It was sonically wide-open—the system would not have wanted an atom more treble, but it was smooth and fine and inviting just as it was—and musically soul-refreshing: I almost cried.… Read the full article

Ifi Audio xCAN

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

Yes it’s an ‘xCan’ headphone amplifier, but it’s not the Musical Fidelity X-Can headphone amplifier. It’s the iFi Audio xCan headphone amplifier. Or more precisely, iFi Audio’s xCAN is a portable, stereo (dual-mono) Bluetooth (aptX and AAC) headphone amplifier that British company Ifi say is: ‘for use with smartphones, computers, TVs and digital audio players (DAP)s.’

While the DACs in most high-end DAPs are more than capable, their inbuilt headphone amplifiers often lack in power,’ said George Poutakidis of BusiSoftAV, which distributes iFi in Australia.… Read the full article
