AGD Production Vivace GaNTube Monoblock Amplifiers

I hear this term thrown around loosely… “disruptive product,” sometimes appropriately used… however in this case, we have a winner.

I’ve been on a mission lately, unintentional as it may seem, to be reviewing Class-D based amplifiers. Talk about a dirty word. I’ve had so many in an out of here, my head is spinning. No idea why that is happening, but I’m having a blast nonetheless. But, I’ll be honest. Most of the time, it’s a similar sound. Sometimes a little more here and a little less there, but this time I’ve got something here that truly redefines Class D.… Read the full article

CAF Sunday Morning

By | November 6th, 2018|Categories: Stereophile|

I began my Sunday morning at Capital Audiofest with a portion of one of Malcolm Arnold’s jaunty overtures: not quite sacred music, but it was nonetheless magnificent in the room sponsored by Gryphon Audio and retailer 20/20 Evolution Systems. In addition to having appropriate weight and realistic die-away, the sound of mallet on bass drum had the most tonally realistic thud I recall hearing through a hi-fi. And on a CD vinyl drop of the mono version of Mal Waldron’s “Warm Canto,” the unison piano, cello, and double-bass notes in the opening measures had realistically tactile note attacks—likewise Ron Carter’s pizzicato cello solo, which was very moving, appropriately so.… Read the full article

Made in China: What it Means for AV Gear

By | November 6th, 2018|Categories: Sound + Vision|

I don’t know if you’ve noticed (though how could you not) that a lot of the stuff we buy these days is made in China. It ranges from the remarkably cheap (like the lightweight, pleated jacket I bought last year in Walmart (for less than the price of a CD or Blu-ray) to the very expensive (such as Buick’s new Envision SUV—yes, that’s made in the PRC as well, the first U.S. car made there, by GM Shanghai). It’s difficult to buy anything today without encountering a product made in China as the only viable alternative.

Musical Fidelity M2si Integrated Amplifier

By | November 6th, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

The Musical Fidelity M2si integrated amplifier is the first Musical Fidelity product to be released under the new ownership of Heinz Lichtenegger, who purchased the company from its founder, Antony Michaelson, earlier this year.

Lichtenegger predicted that he would be able to deliver the same quality Musical Fidelity for which the brand is famous at lower prices than previously, and he’s made good on that promise, with the new Musical Fidelity M2si being available for $1,799 (RRP). Lichtenegger says the new model, which is rated at 76-watts into 8Ω (137-watts into 4Ω) uses technology trickled down from the flagship Musical Fidelity Titan and is built in the same factory in Taiwan as that model.… Read the full article

J Marks System fall 2016

The essential sound of this system is determined first by the loudspeakers, prototypes called Esperanto Parolantos. That’s something of a pun, in that it means “Esperanto Speakers.” (Esperanto, from the audio company I started after leaving Stereophile magazine.)

Mike Zisserson designed the Esperanto Parolanto loudspeaker while taking into account my “Wish List” of desired characteristics and capabilities. In that list I tried to express both in technical terms and in musical terms what I believe a music lover’s relatively affordable two-way non-mini monitor loudspeaker should sound like.… Read the full article
