We find ourselves willing, even eager, to attend to things we’re not really ready for, yet.… Read the full article

Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ Review and Test

By | December 2nd, 2018|Categories: AV Hub|

Expert review and test of the Mytek Brookly DAC+ by Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. Free pdf download included.

James A. Michener in his 1971 novel ‘The Drifters’ indulges in a bit of cheap psychologising, suggesting hi-fi fans are principally interested in a sense of control. That flies in the face of the minimalism of the past few decades: the shedding of tone controls and graphic equalisers, and the preference for having only a volume knob for control.

That said, when it comes to digital audio there are things that are worth controlling.… Read the full article

By Lam Seng Fatt

I have heard ATC’s active speakers before in Hi-Way Laser’s showroom and at the KL International AV Shows, but I have never heard them in my house before.

Kenny Sin of Hi-Way Laser made arrangements to deliver a pair of ATC SCM40 Active speakers to my house more than a week ago. Along with them came two long (3 meters) Furutech power cords, two (also 3 meters) Cardas Golden Reference XLR interconnects and the matching ATC CA2 preamp.… Read the full article

Gold Note announces PA-1175 MK2 amplifier

By | December 2nd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

Prefer your amplification big n ballsy? Introducing a revision of the first stereo power amplifier from Florence’s Gold Note. Inside its 22kg aluminium and steel chassis, the PA-1175 MK2 sets a 640VA custom toroidal transformer to work on four ‘matched’ output transistors per channel for a fully-balanced circuit that nets 200wpc into 8 Ohms, extendable to 520wpc when bridged into mono.

According to the Italian manufacturer, a proprietary “BIAS constant current generator” ensures high-current delivery, low distortion of <0.01%THD @ 20Hz-20kHz and a slew rate – “the maximum rate at which an amplifier can respond to an abrupt change of input level” – of 20V/μs.… Read the full article

Do I really need an excuse to ditch Rochester just before the first major snowstorm of the season just to head down to San Diego? As excuses go, I can think on none more sublime than visiting a high-end audio dealer to evaluate a couple of state-of-the-art designs that have just been introduced.

Alma Audio is nestled in the Kearney Mesa area of the city, not far from the airport. It’s a fairly new enterprise, opened in 2015 by partners Alexandre Siufy and Fabio Storelli.… Read the full article

The Beatles “White Album” Super Deluxe Edition 6CD + Blu-ray

By | December 2nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , |

by Paul Ashby

It’s okay to feel nostalgia for the period that produced the Beatles’ White Album.

(isn’t it?)

Or maybe I’m searching for a word other than “nostalgia” — it connotes positive memories. But I may not be the best person to ask, having let my subscription to the concept lapse somewhere along the way … because I finally realized even nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Marketing bastards co-opted it a decade or three ago. 2018-era nostalgia sucks almost as much as post-Graydon Carter Vanity Fair.… Read the full article
