VAC Statement 450i iQ Integrated Amplifier, Von Schweikert Ultra 9 Loudspeaker System, Esoteric Grandioso D1 DACs

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

Disorder was the order of the day as everyone and their father ogled and chatted about the VAC Statement 450i iQ integrated amplifier ($150,000). During my relatively brief visit to this free-for-all space, in which demonstrations alternated between two systems, there were up to six people standing in front of the one I tried to hear. At one point, someone blocked the speaker on one side while a company rep chatted it up with someone on the other.

Initially, the sound was far too quiet to appreciate, but when it was turned up, I discovered a midrange-strong system, albeit with a somewhat flat top end, that seemed to be playing a string of classical blockbuster extracts.… Read the full article

Sharp is working on a new Dynabook AIO with an 8K, 120Hz display

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

Sharp is starting to make more moves with Toshiba's computer business, which Sharp acquired for $36 million last year. A new all-in-one (AIO) computer with a serious display, something Sharp is known for, was shown off with the Dynabook branding, as spotted by PC Watch.

The new computer wasn't spotted with any specific name, but it got the Dynabook branding that Toshiba recently shifted towards.

The new Dynabook is an AIO with a 31.5-inch display using an 8K IGZO panel capable of hitting 800 nits worth of brightness.… Read the full article

Channel D's Rob Robinson Explains Current-Mode Phono Preamps

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

AXPONA’s Master Class lectures offer a series of seminars on sometimes controversial subjects. To wrap up Friday afternoon’s talks, Channel D’s Rob Robinson explained why for phono preamplifiers, current-mode amplification, with its zero-ohm input impedance, gets the best signal/noise ratio from moving-coil cartridges, compared with conventional voltage-mode circuits, and even improves tracking performance. Michael Fremer reviews Rob’s new Lino C 2.0 current-mode phono preamplifier in the June 2019 issue of Stereophile.

PS Audio Debuts AN3 Loudspeaker

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

The late Arnie Nudell, co-founder of Infinity, was very much a mentor to PS Audio’s Paul McGowan, and Paul and his team have been working a loudspeaker design that would honor Nudell. AXPONA saw the first public demo of the new speaker, the AN3, which is expected to be available toward the end of the year at a price somewhere in the region of $11,500–$14,500/pair. The AN3 features a servo-corrected 8″ aluminum-cone woofer, driven by a 700W amplifier mounted on one of the sides, with a folded ribbon tweeter, a rectangular planar midrange unit sourced from Bohlender-Graebener, and a cone “mid-bass coupler,” the last a consistent feature of Nudell’s designs for Infinity and Genesis.… Read the full article

The room presented by importer Vana LTD of Lake Grove, New York, featured (in addition to some record cleaning fluid and Okki Nokki record-cleaning machines) analog components by the European Audio Team (EAT) and loudspeakers by Audio Physik.

Lovers of antique high-end automobiles in particular appreciate the aesthetic of the 200+lb Forté turntable, all gleaming chrome, mirror black, and leather. The table with the polished F-Note tonearm installed retails for $11,495, but looked like it cost considerably more; the photo above fails to capture the sheer scale of the thing.… Read the full article

AXPONA Coverage Part 1

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: Innerfidelity|

I got to AXPONA on Thursday and was delighted to see that, in a drastic change from last year, headphones and related gear now have their own area.

Last year the noise from being in the general expo space was simply too much to hear anything – thankfully the AXPONA crew listened to feedback and the headphone show floor is now carpeted and cordoned off from the noisier speaker and records marketplace. The unfortunate downside seemed to be a number of manufacturers pulling out in reaction to the state of things last year.… Read the full article

Cube Audio Nenuphar Speakers, First Watt SIT-3 Amp

By | April 12th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

I am not a bot. I measure my own DIY audio gear. But as an audio-show reporter, I’m only interested in those biologically significant sounds that connect my mind as directly as possible to the music being played. I want to see and feel some inkling of a real orchestra floating between the speakers. I found that connection right away in the room sponsored by retailer-distributor Refined Audio.

In addition to fine music reproduction, I had the honor of discussing the sensory perceptions of bats and bullfrogs with my new friend and hero, Steven Dear (above), who is a professor of psychophysics and physical acoustics, and a member of designer Nelson Pass’s inner circle.… Read the full article
