AXPONA Coverage Part 3

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: Innerfidelity|

I stopped at the Mr. Speaker’s booth to say hi to the owner Dan Clark, who I respect immensely for his tireless efforts in pursuit of good sound. Dan has some awesome technical chops and I always learn something interesting when chatting with him, and he always has great sounding setups at his booth.

I really love the Aeon Flow Closed and new Ether 2 headphones, and I don’t say that frivolously – I own both headphones. At AXPONA he was showing the recently announced swappable ear pads for the Ether 2.… Read the full article

The cheaper, disc-less Xbox One S All-Digital Edition launches in May

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

If the rumors didn’t give it away months ago, Microsoft has officially announced the All-Digital Xbox One S – a new 4K HDR streaming-capable console that doesn’t use discs or physical media of any kind.

The All-Digital Xbox One S will be available globally starting on May 7, 2019 for $249 (around £190, AU$349) and joins Microsoft’s Xbox One family of consoles, allowing it to play the same games as the slightly more expensive Xbox One S

In fact, based on the specs shared by Microsoft, you won’t be able to tell the difference between the two when they’re side-by-side.… Read the full article

T+A Elektroakustik, Roon Labs, Stillpoints – AXPONA 2019

T+A Elektroakustik

Speaking with David Shultz about the system, I come to realize that even though I’ve been with T+A Elektroakustik’s much larger system next door, the smaller one in here offers much of the same high-quality digital playback features and ultimate sound quality.

For example, of the static display Series 8 products the DAC 8 DSD High End D/A Converter retails for $4,450 USD and does PCM 32/384, DSD 212 decoding and has an all discrete topology from decoding to headphone output.… Read the full article

Nokturne Audio, Lejonklou HiFi's SINGularity, and the Quad Electrostatics

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

“Good grief! They are using Quads!” I used to use Quad ESL-57s in the mid 1980s before I moved to the US and in some ways, no other speaker has come close to the sonic transparency offered by these idiosyncratic-looking electrostatic speakers. But to see and hear an original pair dating from 1958 in the room shared by Michigan dealer/manufacturer Nokturne Audio and Lejonklou HiFi from Sweden was a highlight of the 2019 AXPONA.

The Quads were being driven by a Lejonklou Tundra 2.5 amplifier ($4950), a Lejonklou Sagatun 1.4 preamplifier ($4950), and the front end was a Linn Sondek LP12, with its Radikal power supply.… Read the full article

EveAnna Manley & the Manley Labs Absolute Tube Headphone Amplifier

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

It’s a beautiful device, even gorgeous, attractive & ergonometric, 12ax7s & 6aq5a tubes rollible, transformer output with switchable impedance in 3 levels.

Like all Tube gear ( my opinion ) it sounds just as good as it’s tubes and power supply.

I could impulse buy one but haven’t. I like the Silver.

Rear Power Switch, dammit, just like Schiit. ( kills it for me )

Why pay 10X the Price of a Valhalla 2 ?

I would buy one at a Estate Sale though!… Read the full article

Onkyo TX-SR393 AV Receiver

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

Onkyo’s new budget-priced TX-SR393 5.2-channel AV receiver (pictured above and below, click on images for larger versions) has both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X built in.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bringing extraordinary flexibility to simplify next-generation home entertainment,’ said Peter Amos, Managing Director of Amber Technology, which distributes Onkyo in Australia. ‘This is because Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks are mixed in a 3D domain and metadata transposes sound origins within the scene to the corresponding positions in the listening space, tracking effects vertically, horizontally and placing audio all around the audience.’

The Onkyo TX-SR393, which puts out 90-watts per channel when two channels are driven (into 8Ω), offers a room-friendly 3.2.2-channel solution to native Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.… Read the full article

Monitor Audio Gold Speakers, Roksan Blak Amplifier & CD Player

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

I was impressed by the new Monitor Audio Gold 300 speakers when I auditioned them at the recent Montreal Audio fest. At AXPONA, Chicago retailer Saturday Audio Exchange was showing off the smaller Gold 200 tower ($5000/pair) and Gold 100 bookshelf ($2100/pair) driven by a Roksan Blak integrated amplifier (4499) and Black CD player ($3999) and hooked up with AudioQuest cables. Like the 300, the smaller speakers feature midrange units and woofers that use Monitor Audio’s RDT II (Rigid Diaphragm Technology) sandwich diaphragms, with a “Micro Pleated Diaphragm” tweeter.… Read the full article

Apple and Qualcomm agree to stop suing each other

By | April 16th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

Apple and Qualcomm’s current legal clashes, including a blockbuster patent argument with literally billions of dollars on the line that just started its opening arguments, are all officially over. Both companies have signed an agreement to dismiss all ongoing litigation, renew licensing and chip supply contracts, and even secured a payment from Apple to Qualcomm, per a press release.

Apple and Qualcomm have been fighting in court for years. The aforementioned patent case was the largest of several legal disagreements: Apple brought suit against Qualcomm in 2017 for $1 billion, alleging the latter was overcharging its licensing fees for mobile communication tech – and then Apple would have to pay Qualcomm again for its modem chips to stick in iPhones.

In opening remarks, Apple lawyers characterized this by saying Qualcomm “double dips,” making $16.1 billion in chip sales and an additional $7.23 billion in licensing fees from Apple in the years 2010 to 2016, according to CNET.… Read the full article
