High-Tech for Luddites: The CAD 1543 Mk II DAC, CAD CAT Transport, Trilogy Audio Systems 915R Reference Preamplifier and 995R Reference Monoblocks, and Verity Amadi Loudspeakers

By | April 17th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

Both the name of the company and the look of their products belie what I found to be the company’s spirit. “CAD”—short, in this case, for Computer Audio Design, but more commonly denoting computer-aided design, evokes highly technical, inhuman stuff. The main CAD products on active display in this room at AXPONA—the CAD Audio Transport, the 1543 Mk II DAC, and various “Ground Control” boxes—are squared off and minimalist in design, resembling space objects from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The components’ green logos evoked, for me, nothing so much as the eyes of aliens come to abduct us.… Read the full article

SVS Prime Pinnacle Speaker – AXPONA 2019

By | April 17th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

The team at SVS always hosts a friendly room. The company attends the audiophile circuit on a fairly regular basis, bringing a good slice of products to the game that land in middle ground between the high-end and entry level budget.

After talking with Nick Brown, VP Marketing and Sales of SVS, about the company and the latest lineup of products I can say I was completely blown away on the depth of his knowledge.

It’s clear that Nick represents a company that is dedicated to the customer.… Read the full article

Butcher Block Acoustics RigidRack Audio Furniture

By | April 17th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

As much as I enjoy hi-fi, I strongly prefer non-hi-fi accoutrements, especially component racks. I’m currently using—and have been for years—a standard cherry entertainment console (the Durham) made by Maine-based furniture company Chilton. True, it’s sagging a bit under the weight of my components, but I’ve managed to reinforce it with strategically placed home-made screw jacks.

The racks produced by Butcher Block Acoustics, which were on display in the EXPO at AXPONA 2019, are about what you’d expect from a company with that name: They look like butcher blocks made into shelves, with lots and lots of maple.… Read the full article

2019 Editors' Choice Awards: Integrated Systems

Riva Arena/Festival $249 (optional Arena battery, $99)/$499 Riva’s two, wireless, multi-room systems in the Wand series offer stunning sound quality from small packages. The compact Arena ($249) and the larger Festival ($499) are both easy to set up and use; just connect via Google, AirPlay, or Bluetooth, and begin streaming music. Both have deeper bass than expected from their compact enclosures, and both play loudly with ease. The Festival is particularly impressive. With 200W of power, a solid wooden case, and a maximum SPL of 106dB, it almost sounds like a pair of floorstanding speakers.… Read the full article

McIntosh MPC500 Power Controller

By | April 17th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

McIntosh has released a surge protection device it calls the McIntosh MPC500 Power Controller (pictured above, click on image for larger view).

The McIntosh MPC500 provides its 240V a.c. mains protection by using three thermally protected metal-oxide varistors (TPMOVs), plus voltage monitoring, so the MPC500 will automatically switch off connected devices in a brown-out. The a.c. line is also filtered to prevent against electromagnetic interference. For Ethernet, coaxial, and other low voltage devices the McIntosh MPC500 provides protection via Gas Discharge Tubes (GDT), Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors and Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSs).… Read the full article
