My AXPONA Adventures: Music (and Laughter) is the Best Medicine

Dateline: April, 2019

Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center. Schaumburg, Illinois

Welcome back my Friends, to the show that (hopefully) never ends! (Apologies ELP.)

I arrived at the 10th annual AXPONA on Thursday afternoon. The Renaissance Convention Center was a buzzing audio-hive of controlled chaos. Crates and boxes were everywhere. Audio systems taking shape, tweaking started. It seemed a Herculean effort to me. In 2019, Audio Expo North America is a jewel-bedecked audio showcase; a behemoth show with almost 200 rooms, tons of sonic fun, countless booths, and displays.Read the full article

Leak claims Moto Z4 will pack a Snapdragon 675 and 6.4-inch screen

By | April 19th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

A new leak claims that the Moto Z4 will pack a midrange Snapdragon 675 chip, the same expected to come in the Moto Z4 Play, according to GSM Arena

That would rebut a rumor floating last November that alleged the Moto Z4 – or the ‘Motorola Odin,’ a codename that may or may not refer to the next flagship Moto device – would pack a Snapdragon 8150 (now known as the Snapdragon 855), the top-tier chip that debuted in the Samsung Galaxy S10.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019: Loudspeakers $20k and Up

AXPONA 2019: Loudspeakers $20k and Up

Sonically AXPONA 2019 was a 180-degree change from the last trade show I attended, in Denver. Where RMAF was a nearly uniform disaster, AXPONA was a nearly uniform success. Oh, next to nothing sounded spine-tinglingly realistic at the Chicago show, so if you were an “absolute sound” kind of listener you might’ve been slightly let down. On the other hand, if the drama, detail, and color of music were your first priorities (i.e., if you were an “as you like it” or “musicality-first” kind of listener) AXPONA would have proved a consistent delight.… Read the full article

Eastwood Hi-Fi only recently started stocking speakers from UK manufacturer Monitor Audio, but Eastwood’s Mike Vernon says that despite it being available only a brief time, its has become one of the store’s best-selling brands. ‘We’ve had some incredible success with the Monitor Audio speaker range over the past twelve months and it has gone from strength to strength winning multiple awards’ he told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine. ‘The latest addition to the family is the new Monitor Series and we’ve been able to put a package together which shows an incredible discount for a new range and brings premium audiophile musicality and an incredibly detailed home theatre performance to a very affordable price point.’

Available in either Walnut or Black Oak finishes, the system, which normally retails for $3,706 is (while stocks last) currently on sale at Eastwood Hi-Fi for $1,999.… Read the full article

Amazon Music playlists are now playable on Echo speakers for free

By | April 19th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

Amazon has announced that Echo owners will be able to use part of Amazon Music for free. The new, free service doesn’t require an Amazon Prime subscription and can be used to access playlists or start new stations by saying "Hey, Alexa," and then a music genre or artist name.

The caveat here is that this new tier of Amazon Music is only available in the US at launch, and the service is fairly minimal. For instance, you don't get on-demand access to Amazon's entire library, and you’re going to hear ads in between songs.… Read the full article

Apple macOS 10.15 may adapt even more iOS 12 features, like Screen Time

By | April 19th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

Apple's closed ecosystem may start to get more uniform as well, as there have been ongoing hints that iOS and macOS will start to share more and more features and applications. Abbey Road Visited and Revisited

By | April 19th, 2019|Categories: Sound + Vision|

Fifty years ago on this day in Beatles history (Friday, April 18), George Harrison recorded to perfection the raucous guitar solo on “Old Brown Shoe” in Studio Three at EMI Recording Studios. After nailing the solo, he joined producer Chris Thomas in the control room to mix the song, which would be released six weeks later as the B-side to a song John Lennon and Paul McCartney had recorded a few days earlier: “The Ballad of John and Yoko”.

McIntosh Laboratory MC462 power amplifier

By | April 19th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

It hit me not long ago: I need more Mac in my life! I promptly purchased the current production version of McIntosh Laboratory’s time-honored MC275 tubed amplifier, to mate to the Mac C2300 tubed preamplifier I already owned. The recently reinvigorated debate in these pages comparing solid-state and single-ended tube designs got me to thinking. One thing led to another, and voilà! McIntosh’s latest solid-state stereo amplifier, the MC462 Quad Balanced ($9000), arrived, bolted to a shipping pallet and encased in two big, heavy, nested boxes.… Read the full article
