Arion Apollo Loudspeakers, LS-200 Linestage, 2A3 Tube Amplifiers, and HS-500 Hybrid Mono Amplifiers; EMM DA2 DAC; Wolf Alpha 3 Music Server; VPI HW-4 turntable, etc.

Tony that was a bunch of strawmen.

There isn’t even a minute suggestion in anything I wrote that I don’t care about sound, or that “it all sounds the same” to me. Where are you dreaming this up?

As a consumer, I’m simply asking myself if the claims made for the product seem credible. You’ve got the burden of proof completely switched around. It’s the person making the claim, especially an extraordinary claim, who has the burden of providing evidence. It’s not up to you or me to disprove it.… Read the full article

CAD 1543 DAC Mk II, Audio Transport, Ground Controls, & Cabling; Aesthetix Mimas Integrated, Boenicke W8 SE speakers, Bibacord Interconnects, HRX SXR Rack

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

After trying more than once to get into the CAD room at Munich High End, I ended up hearing a significantly smaller version of their system in Long Beach. This time, the hybrid integrated amplifier was the excellent Aesthetix Mimas ($7000 without optional modules), which I’ve reviewed for the August issue of Stereophile, and the speakers the diminutive Swiss Boenicke W8 SE ($12,500).

When I entered, the voice of the great, irreplaceable mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli singing Mozart’s “Laudate Dominum” was hard to distinguish.… Read the full article

AMD announced the Ryzen 9 3950X, a 16-core mainstream processor

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

At E3 2019, AMD announced the Ryzen 9 3950X, a 16-core, 32-thread processor aimed at the mainstream. This makes it the highest core count chip ever released for a mainstream audience.

This beast of a processor not only rocks 16-cores, but it also features a whopping 72MB of L3 cache, a boost clock of 4.7 GHz and it does all of this while maintaining a low 105W TDP.

And, while we won't have any hard performance numbers until we get it in-house for a review, this spec sheet alone is enough to promise some mighty performance.… Read the full article

EleKit TU-8600R integrated amplifier, Sparkler Audio S503 Spiral CD Player/Transport, AER Excenter Loudspeakers

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

You’re going to need to indulge me a bit, because, due to some communication difficulties, I’m not totally confident of some prices and components in this room. If I understood correctly, the handmade-in-Japan, 1-bit Sparkler Audio S503 CD Player/Transport costs $1650, and the build-it-yourself EleKit TU-8600R integrated amplifier, also from Japan, goes for $1785. The loudspeaker system appears to be custom, from AER, including that company’s BD2 driver (€3000 each, according to the AER website) in an acrylic stand that looks like AER’s Custom (€5500/pair) but with the addition of the larger (1280mm) excenterhorn acrylic horn (€6120 each) and a subway subwoofer (€3000).… Read the full article

Evolution Acoustics Exact Maestoso Loudspeaker and Cabling, Dartzeel NHB Stereo Amp and Preamp, Wave Kinetics NVS turntable, Merging NADAC, Durand Tonearm

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

See that weird looking thing? It’s the outboard crossover to end all outboard crossovers, and it belongs to the relatively slim Evolution Acoustics Exact Series Maestoso 3-way loudspeaker system ($18,900). Heading an impressive and hardly bargain system from Blue Light Audio of Portland, Oregon, and The Audio Association of Anaheim Hills, the Maestoso made one of its first show appearances since I covered its debut at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest—was it three years ago?

I don’t recall what recording was playing when I entered the room, but piano tonalities were just wonderful.… Read the full article

Laura Jane Grace: Devouring Australia

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

Against Me! and Australia go together like millennials and crippling debt. The genre-defining punk band’s frontwoman, Laura Jane Grace, has long called our sandy shores her second home – we were one of the first countries outside the US to embrace the band’s slinky rhythms and raw honesty, and with each subsequent tour since their first in ’07, the venues have only grown bigger and sold out faster. In total, Grace and the Transgender Dysphoria Blues crew have made the trek over an impressive seven times in ten years. … Read the full article

Ubisoft’s E3 2019: the best games, from Watch Dogs Legion to Gods and Monsters

By | June 10th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

When it comes to E3 conferences, you can usually rely on Ubisoft to bring a touch of charm, spectacle and variety to proceedings and this was the case when it took to the stage of the Orpheum Theatre on day two of the show.

Now, Ubisoft usually has a few of its secrets spoiled before its E3 presentations but 2019 has been a particularly leaky year for the publisher. Despite this, its presentation just managed to be a swimmer rather than a sinker.… Read the full article

In this review we’re checking out the latest flagship introduced by AAW. It’s a triple hybrid design that uses dual electrostatic tweeters.

Disclaimer: AAW provided the Canary free of charge for our honest opinion. I only had to pay to import the final product into Austria. AAW is not affiliated with Headfonia and not a site advertiser. Many thanks for the generosity and opportunity.
