Klipsch RP600-M, Cambridge Audio | RMAF 2019

By | September 21st, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I walked into this Klipsch room before the one I reported on yesterday, and I was a little disappointed to find a pair of Klipsch RP600-M loudspeakers ($549/pair in walnut or black, $649 for piano gloss) instead of something from the Heritage line. I have nothing against Klipsch’s other speaker lines, but I just don’t get as excited about them as I do a gorgeous pair of La Scalas or Cornwalls. For many years Klipsch has made more affordable speakers with this specific look, black cabinets, copper woofer cone, tweeter recessed in a waveguide inset, but the Klipsch RP600-M seems to mark a turning point for affordable speakers.… Read the full article

Gigabyte’s Aorus Gen4 AIC crams four M.2 SSDs into a single card

By | September 20th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

After showing off its new Aorus Gen4 AIC at Computex earlier this year, Gigabyte has officially unveiled its new quad-SSD PCIe 4.0 adapter card.

The card itself is designed to house up to 4 NVMe SSDs and it functions as a multi-way M.2 adapter that allows four SSDs to run from a PCI 4.0 x16 slot. The Aorus Gen4 AIC also includes an active cooling system to help the drives run at consistent speeds even while under high loads.

Gigabyte has outfitted the device with four 2TB m.2-2280 SSDs based on Phison's PS5016-E16 controller as it is the only client SSD controller with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface.… Read the full article

Tesco shutters parking app following license plate image leak

By | September 20th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

British supermarket chain Tesco has closed down its parking validation web app after The Register discovered tens of millions of automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) images left unsecured in a Microsoft Azure blob.

The images themselves consisted of photos of cars taken as they entered and left 19 of the company's car parks spread across the country. While the drivers of these vehicles were not visible in the photos, their license plate numbers were.

The Azure blob which powered Tesco's outsourced parking validation web app had no login or authentication controls and was completely accessible.… Read the full article

ZOOM G1X FOUR

ZOOM delivers good sounds and good value… Again. Words by Steve Henderson.

Note: This piece first appeared in Australian Guitar #134Subscribe to our print edition here!

When ZOOM released their first multi-effect unit (the 9001) in 1990, everyone was amazed at the amount of processing power that a simple-looking, belt-pack unit could deliver. The tones were very processed, in an ‘80s kind of way, and they might not have appealed to everyone (what does?), but nobody could deny the bang-for-buck value. … Read the full article

This iPhone 11 drop test proves why you desperately need a case

By | September 20th, 2019|Categories: TechRadar|

Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced the iPhone 11 Pro as having the “toughest glass ever in a smartphone,” but on the phone’s release day, Tom’s Guide saw evidence to the contrary: when dropped just once from hip-height, the front screen cracks pretty hard.

That’s about the height it would fall when fumbled out of a pocket, so it’s a good estimate of what might happen if you can’t catch your phone in time. The back glass fared better, but still cracked.

It’s not the only new iPhone to suffer a fall and sad cracking:

Granted, it’s not quite enough of a sample size to be representative of the phone’s front glass strength – perhaps it’s stronger when dropped at other angles.

But the experiment totally supports the need for a case to protect these expensive flagship smartphones – we’re starting to see a theme here.… Read the full article

A Black Diamond – The ATC 50SE Loudspeakers

By | September 20th, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

I enjoyed hearing ATC’s 40A (then $12,999) speaker four years ago; enough so I was tempted to buy them (see HERE for the review). They had a fuller range than my reference, and the sound was a bit sweeter.

However, my reference ATCs employ an “SL” (super linear) driver for midrange and lower frequencies, as all of its “classic series” speakers do, whereas the 40A from their entry series do not. The SL technology, as I understand it, addresses problems inherent in steel’s magnetic non-linearity.… Read the full article
