McIntosh MA352 Integrated Amplifier

By | September 10th, 2019|Categories: AV Hub|

McIntosh has released a new hybrid integrated amplifier, the MA352, which has a valve preamplifier stage and a solid-state output stage.

The McIntosh MA352’s preamp stage uses a pair of 12AX7A and a pair of 12AT7 valves. Its direct-coupled transistor output stage is rated at 200-watts per channel into 8Ω and 320-watts per channel into 4Ω. ‘The new MA352 is far more powerful than the MA252, so it has more than enough power to properly drive virtually any set of loudspeakers,’ says Philip Sawyer, of Synergy AV, which distributes McIntosh in Australia.… Read the full article

Krell Illusion II preamp and Duo 300 XD amplifier, VPI HW-40 turntable, Audio Technica Art 1000 cartridge, Alta Audio Alec loudspeakers, and ZenSati Zorro cabling

By | September 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

Krell’s immensely energetic Walter Schofield was in the middle of a system description when I entered the room, so I didn’t know exactly what I was hearing, but whatever it was, the fact that I’d just submitted my review of the Krell K-300i integrated before boarding a plane for Denver left me very eager to hear it.

Dean Martin’s voice, on LP, sounded drop dead gorgeous. The sound was open and inviting, with just a tip of bright edge on top.… Read the full article

Mozilla is bringing back its Firefox Test Pilot program to allow users to try out new features and services and its first new project is the Firefox Private Network VPN service.

The program, which first launched three years ago, was shut down at the beginning of this year but now the company has decided to bring it back but with some changes. In a blog post announcing the return of the Firefox Test Pilot program, vice president of product at Mozilla, Marissa Wood explained how the relaunched version will differ from the original, saying:

“The difference with the newly relaunched Test Pilot program is that these products and services may be outside the Firefox browser, and will be far more polished, and just one step shy of general public release.”

Raidho Acoustics TD2.2 speakers; Moon Evolution 700i V2 amplifier, 780D v2 DAC/streamer, 610LP phonostage; VPI HW-40 Signature turntable, Van Den Hul The Black Crimson cartridge, Nordost Valhalla II cables

By | September 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

In the Gaylord Hotel’s North Tower, where room after room, regardless of its size or layout, seemed conducive to good sound, Raidho Acoustics was making a major impression with the world premiere Raidho TD2.2 2.5-way loudspeakers ($46,000/pair in black). Designed by Benno Baun Meldgaard, who formerly designed loudspeakers for Gamut, the TD2.2 was intended for rooms just a bit larger than the hotel room in which it slayed visitor after visitor.

While the TD2.2’s exterior is similar to the previous version, the TD2.1, the drivers have a new motor design with better sensitivity (89dB), and, in Meldgaard’s words, “much lower Q for better amplifier control.… Read the full article

Gearing up for some of their biggest shows in almost a decade, Grinspoon are back and full of more beans than ever. Before the Chemical Hearts tour rolls through Australia, Matt Doria caught up with frontman Phil Jamieson to vibe on nostalgia, guitars, and the (possible) future of the Lismore legends.

The Australian rock scene has been a consistent bastion of quality since the ‘70s, but if there’s one era we’d have to single out for being especially lucrative, it’s one that spanned the late ‘90s through the mid-Aughts.… Read the full article

Black Diamond x Jimi Hendrix Foundation “Music For Life” Strings

Jimi’s beloved Black Diamond strings helped drive his sound. Today, the company pays tribute to his vision with string sets to fund music development. Words by Peter Hodgson.

Jimi Hendrix’s legacy is one of expression, inspiration, and togetherness. To listen to Hendrix or watch live footage of his otherworldly talent, or to see him talk of hippy and new-age ideals, you get the sense that this was a guy who just wanted everyone to get along, be happy and to make beautiful art for each other.… Read the full article

Focal Revamps Entry-Level Offerings With The Chora Speaker Line

Focal Chora 806

Thursday night at Rocky Mountain Audiofest held a special surprise for a few select members of the audiophile press. Lucky for us, we were pulled into a off-site meeting to see (and be one of the first to hear) a new range of budget-oriented loudspeakers from hifi favorite Focal.

Even though the line starts at a meager (at least for audiophiles) $800/pair for the Chora 806 standmounts, the loudspeakers are still constructed in facilities in Focal’s home of France. The media presentation we heard emphasized the new driver tech and the tooling, assembling, machining and home grown expertise associated with them.… Read the full article

Paradigm Persona 7F loudspeaker and Persona SUB, Anthem STR preamplifier and STR power amplifier, Wolf Alpha 35X server, Torus RM20 power conditioner, Clarus Aqua cabling.

By | September 10th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

Paradigm’s Canadian-designed-and-engineered Persona 7F loudspeakers, which have beryllium diaphragms, anchored a system that received additional grounding from the Paradigm Persona SUB ($6500). The sub’s six 8″ woofers are powered by a 1700W “Ultra Class D” amplifier that, aided by DSP and other stuff, descends to a formidable 12Hz.

The room also featured the premiere of the production version of the Wolf Alpha 35X music server ($9295), which was previously shown at the Hong Kong show in prototype form. The company’s Joe Parvey told me that the 35X includes $1200 retail worth of Stillpoints products, including patent pending ground plane enhancement.… Read the full article
