Florida 2019: Nola, Rogue Audio, Electrocompaniet

By | March 12th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , |

Sometimes the most affordable systems are the most fun.  A good case in point was the tiny speakers with subwoofers from Nola Speakers called the Brio Quattro.  This system was producing an impossibly big sound from two tiny monitors in a bright room while Carl Marchisotto was spinning CDs on an Electrocompaniet ECC-1 CD player feeding the Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum III integrated.

My ears heard the big sound but my ears disconcertingly saw tiny speakers on stands.  The speakers themselves looked like a shrunken big Nola speaker with rear porting on the bottom and an open baffle on the top driver.  … Read the full article

Not new news: Electrocompaniet’s ECI 6DX

By | June 18th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

It’s not new but it’s new to me after iconic Norwegian hi-fi manufacturer tagged yours truly in an Instagram post today about their ECI 6DX: a single box of electronics that plays elegantly to this website’s editorial lean toward super-integrated amplifiers where amplifier, DAC and network streamer come together under one roof to dispense with hi-fi rack and a hot mess of interconnects and power cables.

On amplification, the ECI 6DX pushes 125 wpc into 8 Ohms, 200 wpc into 4 Ohms and will even (apparently) cope with 2 Ohm loads into which it delivers 370 wpc.… Read the full article

Electrocompaniet ECI-6 Integrated Speaker Amplifier – Review

By | March 4th, 2018|Categories: Amplifier - Headmania|Tags: , , , , |

I didn’t know much about Electrocompaniet until recently when Razvan from AVMall told me it’s one of his favorite Brands.

He was actually very excited that he managed to bring Electrocompaniet in Romania through AVMall. He also got me worked up about their products, especially about their amplifiers.

It’s hard not to get enthusiastic when you look at their specs and I thank AVMall for giving the ECI6, their integrated speaker amplifier for a test run.

Looks & Build Quality

This amplifier has some slick looks, mostly because of glass front plate which gives it a really nice touch.… Read the full article

Who Watches the Watchers?

By | April 18th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

I’ve worked in the HighEnd Audio Industry and the Automotive Industry.

People, by and large, strongly prefer the non-intrusive character of MP3 ( Car audio ) type Music Playback Systems to our ( my ) HighEnd Audio Systems . The difference in popularity is probably 99.98% vs .02% annnnnnndddd I can prove it! ( but all of us already know it fully well )

There certainly are people that like Big Sound from time to time ( swimming pool parties ) but it’s an exception.… Read the full article

Some Great Sound on Floor 5

By | February 13th, 2019|Categories: Stereophile|

Vanatoo’s two diminutive, bargain-priced self-powered speaker models were among the many excellent-sounding exhibits I encountered on the fifth floor of the Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa Airport Westshore, during my second day at the Florida Audio Expo. Nor was I the only attendee to realize how good Vanatoo’s speakers sounded: The Seattle-based company’s Gary Gesellchen was DJing to a standing-room-only crowd when I arrived.

I spent most of my time revisiting the larger Vanatoo Transparent One Encore ($599/pair, on the right in the photo above, next to the $499/pair Transparent One), which I’ll be reviewing for Stereophile.… Read the full article

Martin Logan ESL-11A Impression Review

By | September 8th, 2018|Categories: Speakers - Headmania|Tags: , , , , , |

I remember a few years back, when I was convinced that I am a headphone only guy and that I prefer headphones to speakers. At that time, I had my headphone setup in the living room, on a desk near the couch that was facing the TV. At one point, after I finished a music listening session with my HD800 / Audeze LCD-3, I decided to watch a movie. The sound was coming out of the speakers embedded in the TV.… Read the full article

Human after all: the ModWright-modded OPPO UDP-205

By | March 5th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

Simplicity – does your system have it? Do you wish it did? I recall the good old days when my entire playback chain consisted of one box. All I wanted/needed back then was a CD player, and I rambled my way through many of the best available at the time: Sony, Krell, McIntosh, Wadia, Lector, Meridian, Electrocompaniet, Simaudio, Linn, and Esoteric. I routinely gave my vinyl-loving friends a hard time about how many components they needed – table, tonearm, cartridge, stylus, phono stage, etc – and how complex it was to achieve an optimal setup.… Read the full article

Stage III Concepts A.S.P. Proteus power cable Review

By | November 17th, 2017|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

It’s not Just a PC – It’s A Component

Let’s start with some perspective. The Stage III power cords, especially the Proteus, the subject of this review, and its siblings at the top of the Stage III pantheon, are not for the faint of heart. We’re not talking about any other power cords that purport to improve over stock cords. We’re taking about power cords that compete at the very highest echelons of esoteric audiophile stock. The competition includes Nordost Odin II, Tara Labs Grand Master Evolution, Stealth Dream V16 UNI, PranaWire Avatar II and Siltech and Elrod entries; and this doesn’t even get to the “affordable” high end cords like the JPS Labs Aluminata, Synergistic Research Galileo, Silent Source Music Reference and Shunyata Sigma NR.
