Common Wave Hi-Fi, Harbeth, Nagra, Pear Audio Blue, Shunyata Research, NAD, TonTräger at T.H.E. SHOW 2019

Common Wave Hi-Fi is a unique venture in that it is both an audio showroom and social listening space. Located in downtown L.A., Common Wave also dedicated a portion of its space to function as a record shop along with holding events monthly music events and movie nights. It’s all about reaching out to the larger community interests, while including hi-fi into the mix. With forty-four true hi-fi brands in their stable of product lines, I doubt Common Wave will have many problems pairing each new customer with the perfect system that fits their current needs.… Read the full article

Jomo Audio

A headphone which launched in Hong Kong a little over two months ago, Jomo Audio’s new UIEM Game Raider (estimated near $500 USD) is the world’s first (U)IEM made specifically for the mobile gaming and console E-Sports market. The Game Raider UIEM is designed around a “large” balanced armature driver, mated to a 10mm dynamic driver, and featuring a 3D-printed acoustical structure inside.

One might ask… why? And the answer is actually quite intuitive. Professional gaming can go on for hours at a time, pushing the tension of competition to its highest tolerances of both physical and emotional limits.  … Read the full article

Setup Day – CanJam SoCal 2019

By | June 23rd, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , |

The Irvine Marriot has a good setup for a headphone show. A large open convention space surrounded by an old western wagon circle of smaller, private listening rooms makes for a good defense against any bright, sunny Los Angeles days.

Sunny days in LA are easy to come by however, and large collections of headphone demos are not. Ripe with product releases deep into personal audio, CanJam SoCal 2019 fires up this weekend with a fervor. Setup day differs slightly from your run-of-the-mill two channel show as operational hours grace only Saturday and Sunday for the event.… Read the full article

Studio Electric F2 Floorstander Feet

It has been a while since Studio Electric loudspeakers popped up on our radar. Our last piece of coverage on designer Dave Macpherson outside of his collaborations with Benchmark Media was way back at an after hours listening session from RMAF 2015.

Dave is still running the game in different capacities. One that found its way into my press-release loaded email box this week is regarding a new floor standing speaker appropriately called the Studio Electric F2 ($6.9k-$8.4k, depending on finish).… Read the full article

A Four-Way Schiit Shootout – Freya S/+ Vs. Saga S/+

Freya + vs Freya S vs Saga S vs Saga +

So what’s the difference between Schiit’s new pre amplifiers?

It’s not often enough that I get the chance to participate in blind auditions of hifi gear. So when the invitation came across my desk to check out the 4 new pre amps from Schiit audio in a real life mano-a-mano duke out, I had to attend.

For those not familiar, Schiit recently released four new 2-channel pre amps broken out along a few simple feature sets to replace the current tube-only models.… Read the full article

Sunny Components, Technics, EgglestonWorks, Bryston, Audience – T.H.E. SHOW 2019

By | June 17th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

Technics SL1200G

The big news in the Sunny Components room was the NEW super high-end looking, and yet super value priced EgglestonWorks Emma Evolution towers, and Nico Evo monitors being driven by Bryston electronics. While during my time in the room, the Nico Evo was only on passive display, I’ve been assured that they too made their way into the system.

It was the new Emma Evolution ($5,500 pr USD) tower loudspeakers that were stealing the show. Both the Emma and Nico are remakes or reimaginings of previous loudspeakers offered by EgglesonWorks.… Read the full article

Wilson Audio TuneTot

Alma Music & Audio of San Diego brought to T.H.E. SHOW 2019 one of the more exciting small room exhibits at the show. Alma Music & Audio is a full-service high-end audio dealer that services all of southern California. At the show, Alma was displaying their Wilson Audio and Luxman products. Both of which have upped their game in the last ten years, and this small but exquisite sounding system is solid proof of it.

Standing tall in a stunning matte red finish were the Wilson Audio TuneTot ($9,800 pr USD) monitors.… Read the full article

A CanJam SoCal 2019 Prep Sheet

By | June 14th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , |

When preparing for any audio show, a list of needs, wants and must haves immediately comes to any travelers mind. In the case of press, the list of required gear shifts ever so slightly. It has been a long while since I have gone to any hifi show for purely entertainment, so a growing laundry list of production gear usually follows me in tow.

What I Take To The Show.

For next week’s CanJam SoCal show at the Irvine Marriott, I plan to bring the usual “big SLR”.… Read the full article

Brooks Berdan, Magico & Burmester – T.H.E. Show 2019

Brooks Berdan

If you happened to mosey on down to the first floor at T.H.E. Show in Long Beach last weekend, you may have caught the Brooks Berdan Gallerie 2 room tucked back in the far corner. Not out of the way, so to speak, but rather a pronounced location at a pivotal point between the main lecture hall and a fast track to the food trucks in the back parking lot.

The room itself was large, but also filled with big sound from a combination of Magico (M2, $63k) and Burmester (088 Pre, $33k & 909 MK5 Power, $80k).… Read the full article
