IMC Audio, Pass Labs and Audience – CAF 2018

IMC Audio

I often harass showgoers for their opinions. It was Saturday afternoon, nearing the close of the show and I petitioned two elderly gentlemen to offer up some of their favourite rooms from the show. Outwardly one of the two men proclaimed he had only one, the IMC Audio room. I offered a few of my own, hoping he hadn’t been to them yet. He told me, “I’ve been to those rooms, and they just don’t hold up to the IMC room.” Intrigued and a little ego-hurt, I listened further as he told me why the rooms I liked were garbage, and why the IMC room was better at holding the torch for all of the audiophile virtues we seek.Read the full article

D’Agostino Relentless Listening at Alma Audio

By | November 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

It is just a quick day trip down to San Diego via the Pacific Surfliner Rail Car from Los Angeles. The good news is that the seats on the train fair much better than any general airline could muster and the weather was still massively pleasant despite the recent fire devastation in northern LA that had been reeking havoc on the air quality for over a week… which wasn’t very “quality” to begin with in the first place.

Today’s premeditated destination was Alma Music and Audio, just north of the downtown area of SD.… Read the full article

By | November 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

If you haven’t taken a deep look into the Counting Crows debut album August and Everything After now may be the time. The band has decided to rerelease a series of three of their albums on color coded 180 gram vinyl. The partnership appears to be exclusive to The Sound of Vinyl and is slated to ship on November 16 of this year.

The introspective August and Everything After isn’t the perfect album for every mood, but if melancholy and the longing for love is on your mind, then this collection of 11 tracks just might be your huckleberry.… Read the full article

Daedalus, Linear Tube Audio, LamizatOr, WyWires; All Reference – CAF 2018

By | November 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

This is a system I could listen to every day and twice on Sundays. Which is exactly what I did at Capital Audiofest. On Friday, I poked my head in for a listen, Saturday, much of the same. Sunday morning I was there first thing to gather some final impressions of the system and snap some photos when I was called away for an urgent show-going responsibility. So I finally return on for my “twice” listen on Sunday, along with some photos — and I am noticing as the show is winding down, that the Daedalus, Linear Tube Audio and LamizatOr room is still rather busy.Read the full article

Amphion does it again! – CAF 2018

By | November 12th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

by Eric Shook

Firmly grounded with a history in studio and pro sound, Amphion returns to home audio with a stable of speaker designs, that to my ear, offer comforting treble and mid-range that complement the Amphion philosophy of how bass should be done — natural and just right. From desktop bookshelves to floor-standing reference towers, a little bit of everything was on hand for audition.

Amphion is in the honesty business. Outfitting some of the best recording studios in the industry, their targets have been to exhibit the most detailed and reliable information possible to the best tools we have in the recording studio, the human ear.Read the full article

Fidelis AV, Rogers High Fidelity, Harbeth, and Accusound – CAF 2018

By | November 8th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

by Eric Shook

The most interesting room in the world.

Okay, maybe not the world, but the show… good possibility. Something strange was going on in Room #323 at Capital Audiofest 2018. Was it as strange or erie as Room #237 in Kubrick’s version of The Shining? No.

On Friday afternoon in the Capital Audiofest universe, there was something amiss in the system of Harbeth, Roger’s High Fidelity, Accusound assembled by Fidelis AV. There was no magic, no real bass to speak of, and the remaining upper ends were wonky at best.… Read the full article

T.H.E. Show, Capitol Studios, ATC and Legacy Audio

By | November 5th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

It was another audio event at the famed Capitol Studios in LA, but hanging out in studio A in the heart of Hollywood with high profile producers and audiophiles on a Friday night IS my idea of an evening well spent. This time around the big studio room was hosted by the Los Angeles hifi show “T.H.E. Show” (The Home Entertainment Show) and featured a 5 person panel of talent that included 3 producer/mixer/engineers and two loudspeakers manufacturers.

Aside from social niceties and an open bar, attendees were treated to a hour-long panel that spanned the nuances of both the production and reproduction sides of the audiophile coin.… Read the full article

KEF Has A New LSX Wireless System For Your Desktop

By | November 2nd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

KEF sold a lot of LS50s. KEF also sold a lot of LS50 wireless systems. Now the British brand is looking to jump even closer into mainstream sales figures with a smaller and significantly cheaper wireless system the clearly mimics the original inspiration of the clever coaxial-studio-montior-turned-hifi-beauty-queen.

Right off the batt its easy to tell that a unmistakable stroke of industrial design has been retrofitted to the overall look. The website touts a direct relationship is a product designer named Michael Young for credit on the color scheme accents and fabric wrapped changes from the previous 50s.… Read the full article

Pure Audio Project – RMAF 2018

By | November 1st, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , |

Let’s talk about the man behind it all — Ze’ev Schlik — who is the founder of the Pure Audio Project. Ze’ev has created with the Pure Audio Project a reliable and expressive way for those who have dabbled in open baffle speakers (or always wanted to) a way to capture a legitimate hi-fi experience without all of the trial and (t)error associated with the DIY community.

On active display at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest was Pure Audio Project’s brilliant sounding pair of loudspeakers, the Trio 15 Horn 1 — as outfitted for the festival.Read the full article
