À La Carte Productions, Luminous Audio, Ortofon, Spendor, Tweek Geek, Vienna Acoustics, VPI – Florida 2019

The story of this room was great sound. Despite the stated “Value Room” moniker dubbed by À La Carte Productions, and their exhibit room comprising of a system only totally $9,781 USD, I never felt like anything I was hearing was compromised at any point.

Most interesting was hearing the VPI Industries Player ($1,500 USD w/ Ortofon 2M Red) with both the 2M Blue ($236) and 2M Mono ($356) cartridges. I reviewed the Player in 2018, and had it in house for almost six months.… Read the full article

AVM Audio Video Manufaktur GmbH, Ferrari Consulting – Florida 2019

By | March 14th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , |

The featured new product of the AVM and Ferrari Consulting exhibit was the new AVM A8.3 integrated with removable tube line-stage ($17,350 USD). The A8.3 is an all solid-state affair with two modular options; a tone control circuit, and vacuum tube circuit. These options can be dealer or factory installed, but I imagine that a few industrious owners might take a shot at swapping them in and out of the signal. Maybe.

The A8.3 shares much in common with the PA8.2 modular preamp which is active in the main system of AVM’s two-room exhibit.… Read the full article

MBL, United Home Audio, WireWorld – Florida 2019

United Home Audio

I will never tire of a United Home Audio and MBL system. There is nothing like the combining of two titans in their respective fields. MBL defines what is (and should be) an omnidirectional loudspeaker. Many try this type of room loading with standard dynamic drivers, but fail to capture the precise imaging and ghostly sound-staging that MBL “spherical drivers” can and do produce at will.

MBL’s Noble Line series of electronics are indeed showstoppers. Their N11 Preamplifier, N15 Mono Power-Amplifier, and N31 CD-DAC.… Read the full article

Sitting Down With The Schiit Ragnarok 2, Sol and Aegir

By | March 11th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , |

Schiit Audio recently hosted a get-together at their retail space in downtown Newhall. The Southern California location was entertaining several new products that have yet to hit the company’s retail website, all set up in a private listening room as part of a monthly event schedule to satiate a deep list of upcoming products set to release this year.

The three newest offerings on display are actually a slight departure from the personal audio core of Schiit’s slate of hifi components.… Read the full article

LampizatOr, Von Schweikert, MasterBuilt – Florida 2019

LampizatOr, Von Schweikert, MasterBuilt - Florida 2019

LampizatOr had plenty of new product on show here in Tampa. Firstly, their new amplifier the Pacific A300 ($16,000 USD). Although being driven with a VAC Preamplifier in this system, many questions have to be asked. Is it an integrated? Is it a power amplifier? It’s both. Features of the amplifier include 300 watts per channel of Class A/B power output, 0.45v input sensitivity across four inputs. Each input allows custom configuration and labeling on its large OLED display, but don’t fret — there is dimming.… Read the full article

Fern and Roby Turntable

Christopher Hildebrand is the driving force behind Tektonics Design Group who helps design and construct products from furniture to audio components. His partnerships incorporate a growing list of companies including the brass speaker driver baskets in Devore’s latest creation to industrial design with LTA amplifiers. His own audiophile brand Fern And Roby has been making the rounds within the show circuit for a few years now, with products that draw heavily from a sense of artisanal craftsmanship with a twist of industrial flair.… Read the full article

Atrevit Acoustic – Florida 2019

By | March 6th, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , |

Atrevit Acoustic

My first visit with Atrevit Acoustic was in a sprawling expo hall at Axpona a few years back. The speakers system (yes, it is a system) was tucked in the corner of the exhibition pumping out huge IMAX like bass. Obviously this was garnering some sneers from fellow exhibitors, but in the moment, it attracted all the right attention from show attendees.

A few years later, here we are in Tampa, Florida at the Florida Audio Expo. Atrevit has secured a room all to themselves, and the system is on full-bore display, looking more like a mahogany interpretation of Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien, than a traditional set of speakers and amplifiers.… Read the full article

John Atkinson Steps Down As Editor Of Stereophile Magazine

By | March 1st, 2019|Categories: Audiohead, Stereophile|Tags: , |

It’s hard to imagine Stereophile magazine without John Atkinson at the helm, but according to a post on Stereophile’s site today after the June Issue (April 1) a changing of the guard will take place. John will still work with the publication, but in a new role as Technical Editor. Is the announcement an epic April fools joke on Stereophile’s part? Highly unlikely.

Another JA was announced as editor, Jim Austin. Jim has worked as a writer for Stereophile for 15 years and was previously an Editor at Science magazine.… Read the full article

Luxman’s New PD-151 Turntable

By | March 1st, 2019|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , |

Luxman PD-151 Turntable

I’ve always been impressed by every piece of Luxman gear I’ve heard. While the price tag is usually pretty spicy, so is the sound it creates. New and up on the PR wheel is a turntable targeted at “a broader range of audiophiles”. The new PD-151 still calls for a hefty wallet at $3,895, but die hard enthusiasts in the market will likely take note.

The Luxman PD-151 enters the line just below the current PD-171A ($6,400), but will not be replaced by the new shiny thing in town.… Read the full article

Cardas, Mobile Fidelity, Falcon Loudspeakers, Primare, Dr. Fieickert Analogue, Koetsu And A Nautilus Power Strip – Florida 2019

Dr. Fieickert Analogue

I love rooms like the one hosted by Cardas, Mobile Fidelity, Falcon Loudspeakers, Primare, Dr. Fieickert Analogue, Koetsu and Nautilus Power Strip. I know that sounds like a super-sized laundry-list of brand names, but the overall theme of Room No. 502 at the Florida Audio Expo was to “keep it simple.”

Easy to spot from the hallway as I entered the room, in both manner of sight and sound, the Falcon LS3/5a loudspeakers (starting at $2,995 pr USD / $3,250 in Burr Walnut finish as shown)
did well to tackle this small hotel room in terms of giving a full-range impression.… Read the full article
