CAF 2018: Fern & Roby, Linear Tube Audio, Black Cat Cable; ring in a new era

By | November 17th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

ES003310

Fern & Roby take us on a journey into the wide open bandwidth, while Linear Tube Audio rings in a new era for tube integrated amplifiers, Black Cat Cable crosses our path.

ES003321

Sunday at an audio show is always a little bit slower, a little more relaxed, and a whole lot more “are we done yet?” Many of us on the press side are tying up loose ends, or returning to our favourite rooms to squeeze in another listen. I on the other hand am still clamoring to hear everything I can.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: McGary Audio, Salk Signature Sound, Exogal, AntiCables; mouthwatering sound

By | November 16th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

ES002737

McGary Audio shows us what thirty watts can do, Salk Signature Sound gives us the BeAT, Exogal supplies the tunes, and AntiCables once again binds together one of the best sounding systems of the show.

ES002722

“Blindsided”, is a word I used in my show report notes. I know the Salk Signature Sound… sound, but to me the SONG 3 BeAT loudspeaker is something extra special. The new SONG 3 BeAT features a single Satori beryllium tweeter (Be) mounted atop an Audio Technology (AT) 4″ mid-range, while down below a 7.5″ woofer handles bass down to 33Hz.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: VIMBERG, TIDAL Audio, TW-Acustic, Transfiguration, Antipodes, and Skogrand

By | November 15th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

ES002827

I may have misspoke, or left a few of my earlier proclamations about the newest VIMBERG speakers less than acutely defined. If you are a listener of our Occasional Podcast, or reader of our little sister publication Audio-Head.com, then you may have heard me refer to the VIMBERG Mino loudspeakers as possibly the greatest bargain in hi-fi. To eat my own words for being less than accurate, the VIMBERG Mino loudspeakers are indeed not the greatest bargain in hi-fi.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Troy Audio, Twin AV, Triode; big speakers, big sound

By | November 12th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

KEF R Series

ES000633

Troy Audio was presenting at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and just like last year, they had great success in keeping their exhibit room as one of the most visited, and well regarded.

ES000645

Troy Audio had two systems: The first was made up of Triode Corporation tube electronics, a preamplifier and power amplifier using 300B tubes at just 8 watts. The digital source was an Esoteric CD transport, while the DAC was the small giant DAC212SE from DiDIT High End.

CAF 2018: Luminous Audio Technology, PureAudioProject, and VPI Industries; The sound of freedom

By | November 10th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

ES002995

VPI Industries lends a hand and two tonearms, Luminous Audio Technology and PureAudioProject share a philosophy, and Soundsmith moves us — along with some iron.

VPI Industries was lending a hand to Luminous Audio Technology and PureAudioProject, by handling the analog section of the demonstration. Outfitted with a Grado cartridge (that I didn’t spend enough time listening to) and a Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC Star moving iron cartridge (which I spent too much time listening to) that sounds as good as anything pushing $5k, though it’s street price is well under $2k.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Can Jam – highlights and high-sounds

By | November 9th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

ES000860

I am not a headphone guy. Even in my youth, I was all about the room filling stereo experience. Seeking to learn more about the culture of head-fi that has sailed far off port without me, I tap my friend Jameson to be my guide.

This is a sound I can really get used to. When we talk about loudspeaker voicing we talk about the sound a brand is often known for, the way they blend and present the various frequencies of the music.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: Must See Rooms, Saturday

By | November 4th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here at Capital Audiofest … okay, okay, — I don’t know how many brands exactly, but it does seem like a lot this year. Which makes 2018’s event feel every bit like the “premier show of North America’s eastern coast”, that we often claim it to be. Fear not, as the rag-tag band of misfits from Part-Time Audiophile are here to be your surrogate audio show guide.

Here are some surefire rooms to get you started off on the right foot.Read the full article

RMAF 2018: KRELL, Alta, Acoustic Signature, AntiCables; A renewed faith

By | November 2nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

ES000173

KRELL Industries unveils their new K-300i integrated, Alta Audio shows off their superbly underrated Celesta FRM-2 speaker, Acoustic Signature supplies all things analog with a Triple X turntable, whilst AntiCables ties it all together with bow.

ES000167

Krell Industries, one of the first to ever offer a high-end integrated, debuted an updated K-300i integrated amplifier that sports copious amounts of power and connectivity.

Like the KAV-300i from 1996, and the S-300i over a decade later, the new K-300i aims to reclaim the helm the high-end integrated mountain top by delivering 150 wpc into 8-ohms, or 300 wpc into 4-ohms.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Bricasti, TIDAL; the present truth

By | October 29th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

ES000230

From the exacting truth found in all Bricasti Design electronics, and delicate balance of dynamics offered from all TIDAL Audio loudspeakers, I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a better exhibit of digital’s sonic prowess. It could have something to do with “true direct DSD”, but that’s something you’ll just have to find out for yourself. If given the chance, do give this duo an audition.

ES000238

Classical music in DSD. Is there any other way to do it? Not likely. Digital for most people tends to show its true colors when faced with the challenges presented by great classical recordings.… Read the full article
