Tara Labs RSC Air Evolution Interconnects

By | March 1st, 2019|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

I am staring out my window this afternoon, watching the snow fall and lay a blanket of shimmering white across my lawn, and touching every corner of our residential cul-de-sac. I sit here, marveling about how quiet my little corner of the city has become. You hear no cars, the neighbors are tucked in their homes, and even the deer that roam our development are nowhere to be seen. Living in a modestly sized Western Washington city means that true quietness, that absence of all noise, is a rare experience.… Read the full article

Wireworld Eclipse 8 Loudspeaker Cables

By | December 31st, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

When I have conversations with my friends about Wireworld, the level of recognition is almost universal as this is one of the early companies that pioneered the field of high-performance component cabling. Yet if you dig a bit deeper and ask what they know, you often find that many hobbyists do not have an in-depth understanding of the company, or what their products offer. You might get the response of “well, they make cables,” or perhaps you will hear, “they make pretty expensive cables,” and variations of those answers.… Read the full article

JICO Seto Hori Cartridge

By | October 24th, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

The Nippon Jewel Industry CO LTD is typically referred to as JICO, a company many analog hobbyists are familiar with. JICO has a long and distinguished pedigree in the field of manufacturing, as it began producing steel sewing needles for the kimono industry 140 years ago, and diamond tipped phono cartridge styli in 1964. The company is in a remote location, over 200 miles from Osaka, which is the nearest city. In the early years, this extreme degree of geographic isolation meant that JICO employees had to fabricate and maintain all the machinery, jigs, molds, and stamps that were needed to produce their product.… Read the full article

Analysis Plus Silver Apex Cables

By | September 8th, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , |

Analysis Plus is essentially an engineering firm that has chosen audio manufacturing as one of the areas oh which to focus their resources. What I find interesting is that the fundamental concepts and design geometry that Mark Markel had identified years ago has remained essentially unchanged within their product line. In today’s popular culture, a large cross-section of people are drawn to new, improved, enhanced, or next generation, all of which basically boils down to the concept of different. Now, Analysis Plus has developed refinements to their products over the years, with advancements in conductor materials, terminations, and minor tweaks of the design implementation.… Read the full article

Ortofon Cadenza Blue Cartridge

By | July 10th, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

Over the years a wide array of cartridges have passed through my reference system. While I cannot claim to have had serious relationships with designs from every cartridge manufacturer in our hobby, I have listened extensively to products from Dynavector, Shelter, Sumiko, Koetsu, Transfiguration, Benz Micro, and more than a handful of others. Over the past few years I have developed an affinity for the Ortofon Cadenza series of moving coil cartridges. For approximately three months I have been logging quite a few hours on an Ortofon Cadenza Blue, and this cartridge has emerged as a personal favorite in the Ortofon line up.… Read the full article

Holt Hill Audio Cionnsaile Monitors

By | February 3rd, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

As the science of astronomy moves forward, many of the ideas about how the universe has formed continues to evolve. The accepted theory used to be that galaxies formed from gas clouds and star clusters coming together. Over time gravity gathered enough material together to form the various galaxies in the universe. Only lately has another credible theory has emerged, where massive clusters of matter were fractured at the Big Bang in which the universe came into being, and that this matter continued fracturing over time to form the galaxies we see today.… Read the full article

LP Gear Vessel R3SV Cartridge

By | September 18th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , |

When the final rays of light faded from the horizon on what was widely perceived as the twilight of analog playback in this hobby, there was a tragic loss of cartridge manufacturers and their parts suppliers. In those days, the high point of cantilever technology had been realized, and the stylus assembly mass of cartridges had been pushed to astonishingly small numbers. This reduction in mass resulted in improved tracking, quicker transient response, and finer resolution of detail. In those days cartridge manufactures offered designs with cantilevers made from beryllium, hollow tube gemstone or boron, and even combinations of titanium and diamond coating.… Read the full article

Wireworld Eclipse 7 Cables

By | June 28th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , , |

The years 2015 and 2016 was a major transition for my family. A promotion for my wife resulted in the remodeling and eventual sale of our home on the East side of Washington state, which had been our home base for over 15 years. In my audio room, I had put together several excellent systems, and this was the genesis of where I began writing for Affordable Audio, and later transitioning over to Positive Feedback. The move to Western Washington meant a year long stint in an apartment, the dismantling of the stereo, and an eventual happy ending with a home purchase in the later part of the year.… Read the full article

First Watt F7 Amplifier

By | March 28th, 2017|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , , , |

The First Watt series of amplifiers started as an exploration of uncommon circuit designs in a low wattage format, and has been an ongoing endeavor for two decades now. From Nelson Pass we have seen many an iconic audio product, such as the Threshold electronics, the Stasis circuit that Nakamichi commissioned, and of course the Pass Labs products. You must wonder how a designer can stay so creative over the years, and where does this diverse collection of circuits come from?… Read the full article

Graham Slee Accession Phono Stage

By | December 17th, 2016|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , , , , |

The humble phono stage is the unsung hero in most analog systems, yet many hobbyists overlook its importance and often allow it to become a bottleneck. This is especially true for those folks who operate in the affordable realm of vinyl playback, and are concerned with getting the most from their audio dollars. This topic is perhaps my personal soap box, as I have seen so many systems where excellent turntables and cartridges are held back by the use of phono stages that use rudimentary circuits, low grade power supplies, and have minimal options for achieving a proper match to the cartridge being used.… Read the full article
