Introduction – A bridge between two worlds for the music enthusiast

Rek-O-Kut enjoys a long and storied history in the evolution of turntables for studio, broadcast, and home use. Esoteric Sound are the owners and curators of the Rek-O-Kut brand since 2004 and have continued the tradition of serving varied industries, archivists, and hobbyists. Eight years ago this month, it was on these Dagogo pages where Philip Holmes first explored the modern Rek-O-Kut Rondine 3 and how it served as a universal turntable for all types of vinyl software.

Merrill-Williams R.E.A.L. 101.3 turntable Review

By | November 8th, 2018|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

I can scarcely believe that it has been seven years since my introduction to the original Merrill-Williams R.E.A.L. 101. Since that time, the 101 has not only been my reference, but has always proved to be the under-stated silent star in the sound of my analog system. It was therefore quite surprising when earlier this year I received word from co-designer and turntable legend George Merrill that he and Robert Williams had made some refinements to the R.E.A.L. 101. I was then offered the chance to review the new fruits of their labor as soon as the summer months.

Mundorf MA30 Anniversary SilverGold speaker Review

By | March 6th, 2018|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

The Mundorf speaker is available as a package of parts and detailed plans for constructing the speaker boxes, not actually meant to be sold assembled.

I’m sure many of our readers have heard of the West German company Mundorf in the context of highly regarded speaker crossover parts, such as capacitors, coils, resistors, complete crossover assemblies, wire, fuses, terminals, etc. As it turns out, this same Mundorf, along with its extensive parts catalog, also manufactures a rather extensive line of AMT (Air Motion Transformer) speaker drivers and complete ready-to-use crossover assemblies for both the home audio and pro audio worlds.

2016 Axpona show report, Part 4 – Memorable Rooms

By | May 4th, 2016|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

My favorite part of any show is that quest for something, anything, that stops me dead in my tracks and demands I take notice.  Better yet, a system that commands me to sit and stay a while. In that respect, I have to say that AXPONA 2016 had its share of riches. You could call these my “best of..”, but really, these are the rooms that for one reason or another managed to make a connection with me.

Thrax / Audio Union / Enklein

This room is a mystery indeed.

Legacy Audio / Raven Audio

In a rather large ballroom, Legacy was sporting several different system configurations.

The Legacy Aeris, actually my favorite of the line, was on display powered by a pair of Raven Audio 300B-based monoblocks, Metronome Transport, and Legacy Wavelet Preamp/DAC.

Another system setup featured the awesome little Legacy Studio HD speakers

Raven Audio’s extensive line(s) of tube electronics make for one heck of an awesome spread!

Legacy3 -RavenTable

Monitor Audio / Sim Audio

Monitor Audio was showing their huge and rather imposing Platinum II speakers to great effect.

Audio Expo North America, 2016

When it comes to audio shows, both regional and “national”, putting one on and finding that ideal weekend that can mostly likely pull in the audiophile and pre-audiophile masses is a bit of a black art. In case you haven’t noticed, some of the more successful shows have been conveniently held over an actual holiday weekend or within a week of a national holiday weekend. I guess the theory is that folks will have more disposable free time to dedicate to a multi-day hobbyist event such as ours.

Arcam FMJ CDS27 universal audio disc player Review

By | February 25th, 2016|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

Arcam is one of those well established mid/high-end companies from the UK that offer more than just a taste of the high-end at very attractive prices. For some reason, they never seem to get much further than whispers of recognition in the US, but perhaps this is about to change.

Over the years I have encountered several of their superb products in my travels around the rather barren high end audio landscape of South Florida. I was therefore very pleased when I was approached to review the FMJ CDS27 player.
