High-Resolution: Does it matter? Part III

The content I reviewed in the first installment of this series was provided by Ethan Winer, a very familiar name to many audiophiles and enthusiasts. Ethan wrote a reference book called “The Audio Expert”. I have copy and value the information provided in his book. I wrote my own book to focus more on the production processes involved in making a great recording and methods that audio enthusiasts can use to improve the quality of their listening experiences. It turns out that Mr.… Read the full article

T.H.E. Show Report and Wrap Up

By | June 5th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , |

In spite of some confusion on the run up to T.H.E. Show held this past weekend and the relatively small number of vendors, I can report that it was very successful from my perspective. The AIX Records booth was located at the entrance to the marketplace. It was hard to miss the layout of my DVDs and Blu-rays discs AND the Music and Audio: A User Guide To Better Sound book on the tables. I had my trusty Oppo Universal Player (a custom modified BCT-101 with multiple S/P DIF digital outputs) connected to a Benchmark DAC-2 HGC and a couple pairs of Oppo PM-1 headphones.… Read the full article

High-Resolution: Does it matter? Part II

The music industry has a vested interest in promoting “so-called” hi-res music. Hardware manufacturers want you to believe that increasing the sampling rate to 192 – 384 kHz and lengthening word lengths to 32-bits will transform your listening experience — and make you invest in yet another upgraded DAC. Download and streaming sites want you to pay premium prices for standard-resolution music albums transferred to high-res bit buckets. In reality, the fidelity stays the same as the original standard-res source. And in spite these sites’ insistence that they “verify” the authenticity of each and every track through rigorous evaluation and that every track offered on their site is “high-res”, the fact is they aren’t (I’ll be writing an entire post about this false “feel good” propaganda soon after I had a back and forth with a download site founder about this issue.).… Read the full article

There are a lot of audio shows. As the owner of a high-end record label and the author of Music and Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound, I’m obligated to attend most of them. I have been a regular attendee at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, AXPONA, the Capitol Audio Fest, TAVES, the California Audio Show, The New York Audio Show, the Salon Audio, the Los Angeles Audio Show, and T.H.E. Show in Newport Beach, which is happening at the end of this week!… Read the full article

High-Resolution: Does it matter? Part I

By | May 25th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , |

I am a member of several audiophile FB groups and regularly post comments when I think I have something to offer. Recently, someone asked whether high-resolution was really worth it? Several others chimed in taking a variety of positions. But there was one comment from a well known audio expert, that contained a link to an article that he had written about high-resolution audio. He takes the position that it’s unnecessary and that “repeated studies” have shown that listeners cannot tell standard-res from high-res audio.… Read the full article

Munich High End 2018 – Looking Back

It’s been about 10 days since I returned from Munich and my first High End Show. I had to race back to Los Angeles to give final exams to my anxious students, grade papers, calculate grades, and attend graduation ceremonies. It was a whirlwind trip but got to spend some time with our youngest son Michael (who’s been living in Berlin and works for a famous Icelandic/Danish artist named Olafur Eliasson). Thankfully, my wife Mona got to spend a couple of extra days in Austria before returning to SoCal.… Read the full article

Munich High End – Day 1

By | May 11th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , |

Flying from Los Angeles to Munich on Lufthanza was surprisingly easy on an Airbus 380. The huge plane was completely packed but getting on and off was handled pretty well by the crew. My wife and I arrived at the MOC convention center by mid afternoon on Wednesday and lugged four 50-pound boxes of books from the front curb to the shared booth at Hall 3 J15. Todd Garfinkle of MA Recordings and the other partners were already busy setting up.… Read the full article

Headed to Munich High End Show!

By | May 8th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

It was a tough decision but my wife and I — AND 200 pounds of books and Blu-ray discs are headed to Munich later today. This will be the first time that I have traveled to Germany for the largest audio show in the world. I’ll be sharing a corner booth with Todd Garfinkle in Hall 3 J15 from Thursday through Sunday — unless I manage to sell all 65 books that I hauling with me and get some tourist time.… Read the full article

MQA: Archimago Adds a “Final” Nail to the Coffin!

Every interested audiophile, equipment manufacturer, audio engineer, and content supplier should carefully read “MQA: A Review of controversies, concerns, and cautions” by Archimago, which was posted on the Computer Audiophile site back in March. I hold Archimago in the highest regard (and consider him a friend) but this article is a thorough, thoughtful, and critical analysis of the hoax that is MQA. I don’t know why I didn’t hear about it sooner — I don’t spend very much time reading CA — but kudos to Chris and Archimago for a terrific piece.… Read the full article

Munich 2018? Possible Road Trip

I heard from a good friend — a member of the audiophile community and vendor of high-end music servers — who suggested that I bring a couple of cases of the book Music and Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound to Munich for the high end audio show happening in 10 days. I’m seriously considering making the mad dash to Germany between the end of my semester and the start of final exams. Todd Garfinkle or MA Records (who I’ve know since our days in the music department in Northridge, CA) has a booth at the show and told me that he would share a small corner of it.… Read the full article
