Symphoria enables Virtual 3D Sound in the new Audi A1

Immersive sound is now also a reality in compact cars. Recently, the new Audi A1 was launched, and with it the world’s first 3D sound system that does not have loudspeakers above the dashboard. Producing the inimitable Audi surround sound in a small car is enabled by the intelligent Fraunhofer Symphoria algorithm using sophisticated acoustic reflections from the windscreen. xHE-AAC and MPEG-D DRC Mandatory for Android Pie Devices

Earlier this month, Google announced the general availability of Android 9 “Pie”, along with the first devices incorporating the latest release of Google’s mobile operating system. Android Pie comes with a string of major upgrades in terms of audio playback, since the Extended High-Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) audio codec and MPEG-D DRC Loudness and Dynamic Range metadata, both substantially developed by Fraunhofer IIS, are mandatory components of the operating system. The xHE-AAC implementation used by default in Android Pie has been provided by Fraunhofer IIS and is available as part of the FDK2 AAC Codec Library for Android.… Read the full article

ORPHEUS – the Movie

The ORPHEUS project, pioneering the development of an end-to-end object-based media chain for audio content, was officially concluded in May 2018, when the second and final ORPHEUS workshop was held at Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in Munich. There, the ten project partners presented their findings to an auditorium filled with more than 100 broadcast and audio professionals from all over the globe. Successful Demonstration of Interactive Audio Streaming using MPEG-H Audio at Norwegian Broadcaster NRK

Representatives from Norwegian broadcasters, technology companies and other invited experts had the opportunity to enjoy the 2018 Football World Cup matches from Russia using interactive audio, in the NRK premises in Oslo, Norway. SBS Conducts Worldwide First Regular Broadcast with Immersive and Interactive Sound Powered by MPEG-H Audio

The opening game of the 2018 Football World Cup in Russia will mark the world’s first regular broadcast with immersive and interactive audio: The South Korean television and radio network company SBS will transmit this match live in Ultra-High Definition (UHD) based on the ATSC 3.0 standard, utilizing the advanced features of Fraunhofer’s MPEG-H TV Audio System, immersive sound and interactive audio. Fraunhofer’s xHE-AAC Audio Codec Software Extends Native AAC Support In Android P For Better Quality At Low Bitrates

With the release of the Android P Developer Preview 3 (Beta 2), Fraunhofer IIS announces a new version of the popular FDK library which has been a part of Android since 2012. The FDK2 version will bring several new technologies to Android OEMs, service providers and developers, including xHE-AAC for video and music delivery down to 12kbit/s for stereo sound and MPEG-D DRC dynamic range control for better listening in noisy environments. The latest version of the MPEG AAC audio codec, xHE-AAC, will extend the usable stereo bitrate range of AAC – from as low as 12 kbit/s up to 300 kbit/s, enabling subscription video on demand (SVOD) and streaming music distributors to globally offer a better, more reliable consumer experience over congested networks and particularly in regions where consumers still rely on 2G or 3G connections.… Read the full article

Successful Terrestrial And Satellite Reception Of MPEG-H Audio During The Roland Garros French Open

The MPEG-H TV Audio System, developed primarily by Fraunhofer IIS, passed a major milestone in Europe when it was successfully transmitted via satellite and DVB-T2 in the live Ultra HD TV broadcast channel of the Roland Garros French Open tennis tournament. France Télévisions and the French Tennis Federation, in collaboration with TDF and FRANSAT, a subsidiary of Eutelsat, successfully tested the transmission and reception of MPEG-H Audio immersive sound over DVB-T2 and satellite during the Roland Garros tennis tournament. The MPEG-H Audio stream was included in the regular live Ultra HD broadcast of the Philippe Chatrier court, starting with May 27th and will be broadcast live until the end of the tournament on June 10th.… Read the full article
