EBU and Fraunhofer IIS Conducted Live MPEG-H Audio Production Trial at Eurovision Song Contest 2018

The European Broadcasting Union EBU and Fraunhofer IIS have successfully conducted the first trial for live production of immersive and interactive sound using the MPEG-H TV Audio System at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Lisbon, Portugal. For the trial, the Fraunhofer sound engineers installed a height dimension to the impressive microphone setup in the Altice Arena, enabling them to produce an immersive and personalized audio mix live. EU project ORPHEUS shows object-based media innovations at workshop in Munich on 15 May

These and many more personalised, immersive listener experiences become possible due to a novel technological concept called object-based media, which will fundamentally change the production and user experience of radio broadcasts and multimedia productions. JPEG XS – Image coding for video over IP transmission in production quality

Fraunhofer IIS announced its first JPEG XS codec implementation for video production at the NAB Show in Las Vegas. The coding specialists of Fraunhofer IIS demonstrated the JPEG XS codec as an input format for post-production in a software plug-in for Adobe® Premiere® Pro CC with real-time playback capability of 4k60p UHD video. With ever-increasing amounts of data from higher resolution and dynamic range in videos, long-distance transmission from coax cables in studios will soon become outdated. At the same time, production companies and studios are trying to substitute specialized cables and switches for video transmission by commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with the introduction of simple and cost-effective IP transmission over standard Ethernet infrastructures.… Read the full article

Fraunhofer IIS Audio System Selected for Chinese 3D Audio Standard for UHD TV

China’s AVS 3D Audio Task Group has chosen Fraunhofer IIS as the transmission audio codec solution provider for the upcoming 3D Audio standard that will be used in the country’s 4K UHD broadcast. Imagine a car radio that keeps on playing your favorite local radio station — without interruption — when you drive out of the station’s broadcast range. That’s the promise of Hybrid Radio, and Fraunhofer’s Sonamic TimeScaling technology is critical to its success. A Hybrid Radio switches from broadcast reception to a station’s web stream when the broadcast signal weakens at the fringes of a station’s coverage area. Fraunhofer’s Sonamic TimeScaling algorithm makes the switch seamless and uninterrupted. Without Fraunhofer’s solution, web-stream playback could be delayed by more than 20 seconds, leaving an irritating gap between the time that the broadcast signal drops out and streaming begins.… Read the full article
