I know, I know…I’ve been lazy over the past month and remiss in not writing. No new posts, no rants, no complaining, and no news. As I look around at the usual audio sites and read the usual posts by […]

In the middle of June, I posted a blog titled the HD-Audio Challenge. Readers were encouraged to download six pairs of music tracks, do some careful listening to determine which was the original 96/24 master, and which was a downconversion […]

The Waldrep summer 2018 vacation is over. Mona, Charlie, and I returned to Southern California early last week after driving 5200 miles around the western U.S. — we visited Carmel, sped around Lake Tahoe in a 23 foot skiboat, climbed […]

Audiophile Societies – A True Story

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article about an event that reported on some of the nonsense demos that happen at trade shows (you can visit the article by clicking here). I deliberately avoided naming the salesperson who demonstrated the “benefits” of expensive — very expensive — power cords and the name of his company out of respect for the hosts. His demo produced audible/measurable increases in the amplitude of identical music selections. A result that is impossible according to the laws of physics.… Read the full article

The Hi-Res Challenge – We Have A Winner!

I’m thrilled that so many audio enthusiasts have expressed an interest in taking the High-Resolution Challenge. At last count, I’ve supplied the FTP credentials to over 300 interested readers. And I’ve started receiving responses. I’m not going to reveal the correct answers or otherwise discuss the results but I thought I would talk about a specific case in some detail because this person managed to get all 6 correct! Brodie was the first person to identify the high-resolution files in every case.… Read the full article

Are New HD Downloads Really Hi-Res Music?

I admit to spending too much time cruising FB. And too many of my FB friends and groups are audio related. When I see a post or comment that tweaks my sensibility, I am not shy about posting a comment or linking to a counter argument. During one such discussion yesterday, I made my usual statement that virtually ALL content available on so called “high-resolution” download sites doesn’t qualify as high-resolution — at least in my stringent definition. I’ve downloaded and analyzed dozens of albums from a variety of sites (Qobuz, HDtracks, ProStudioMasters etc.), Some of them were older and obviously from analog masters (Cat Stevens “Tea for the Tillerman” and Neil Young’s “Harvest”) while others are newer and produced using digital tools (James Taylor’s “Before This World” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Golden Hour”, which includes her hit “Slow Burn”).… Read the full article

The High-Resolution Audio Challenge

Recent posts have challenged previous studies trying to establish whether high-resolution audio is perceptible. There’s also a lot of conversation about the same topic on a closed professional audio engineering list I belong to. I found Ethan Winer’s “high-resolution” examples lacking and Meyer and Moran’s study seriously lacking because of the content used. Not surprisingly, both of these gentlemen argued that I need to conduct a study of my own. While I was on the CEA audio board, I submitted a proposal to have them conduct a rigorous study.… Read the full article

Fidelity vs. Sound: Which Is Better?

During the recent T.H.E. Show I told several attendees that I intended to write a post comparing fidelity vs. sound. They are not the same thing. The background for this post comes from a variety of sources. I’m sure a prominent piece comes from conversations I’ve had with advocates of analog audio and vinyl LP supporters. A fellow booth partner in Munich strongly disagreed with my insistence that digital audio can deliver far greater fidelity than the than his cherished turntable.… Read the full article

High-Resolution: Does it matter? Part III

By | June 6th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

The content I reviewed in the first installment of this series was provided by Ethan Winer, a very familiar name to many audiophiles and enthusiasts. Ethan wrote a reference book called “The Audio Expert”. I have copy and value the information provided in his book. I wrote my own book to focus more on the production processes involved in making a great recording and methods that audio enthusiasts can use to improve the quality of their listening experiences. It turns out that Mr.… Read the full article

High-Resolution: Does it matter? Part II

The music industry has a vested interest in promoting “so-called” hi-res music. Hardware manufacturers want you to believe that increasing the sampling rate to 192 – 384 kHz and lengthening word lengths to 32-bits will transform your listening experience — and make you invest in yet another upgraded DAC. Download and streaming sites want you to pay premium prices for standard-resolution music albums transferred to high-res bit buckets. In reality, the fidelity stays the same as the original standard-res source. And in spite these sites’ insistence that they “verify” the authenticity of each and every track through rigorous evaluation and that every track offered on their site is “high-res”, the fact is they aren’t (I’ll be writing an entire post about this false “feel good” propaganda soon after I had a back and forth with a download site founder about this issue.).… Read the full article
