Katli Audio, Conrad-Johnson, Usher, TriangleArt | T.H.E. Show 2019

By | July 4th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Katli Audio is yet another Southern California dealer that’s new to me. Based in Chino Hills, Katli hosted a demonstration using Conrad-Johnson amplification, the impressively massive TriangleArt Master Reference turntable ($39,950) with 12″ Osiris Makassar Ebony tonearm ($6990), cabling by Cardas Audio and two pairs of Usher Audio speakers–the large TD-10 ($21,950/pair) and the small SD-500 monitors ($1995/pair). Both pairs of speakers have Diamond DMD tweeters and were placed side-by-side, and for a minute I thought I was going to experience one of those “it’s actually the small ones that are playing” moments which probably would have made major news at the show.… Read the full article

CHICAGO (PTA) — Two pair of massive Piega loudspeakers stood tall, cast in silhouette against the Chicago sky. Between them, glowing tubes, like city street lights sat atop the Air Tight monoblocks.

Accuphase is a smooth operator

By Lam Seng Fatt

Another reviewer had bought the Accuphase E-470, so I ended up reviewing the lower model, the E-370 which is a 100-watter integrated amplifier.

Victor Pheh of Hi-Fi Creations Trading delivered the E-370 to my house and it took the two of us to carry it from the boot of his car. Accuphase products are heavy and very well made.

Press a button and the panel below the two meters will flip down slowly to reveal lots of buttons.… Read the full article

Warsaw 2017: Avantgarde gets the timing right

By | November 25th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

I enjoyed listening to the demo from the company’s technical director Armin Krauss, he went on talking about the ancient theater of Epidaurus and how it manages to amplify sound for 14.000 seated spectators with nothing but acoustical amplification (I know, been there several times, acoustics are amazing). All this wasn’t needed, who loves horns knows pretty well what they can do and what they can’t.

The thing with horns is that they rarely get the bass right. Usually out of phase and lacking in speed compared to the ultrafast horn-loaded mids and tweeters.

Accuphase DP-950/DC-950 Super Audio CD Player

Accuphase DP-950/DC-950 Super Audio CD Player

It’s been thirty years last year from the moment when Accuphase presented to the world their own Compact Disc Player. The two-box DP-80/DC-81 system premiered in July 1986 and immediately became a flagship player for this brand. The CD transport was designed in a way it would have been today, ie. with utmost attention to the power supply circuit and knowledge of the impact of vibration on sound. Equally important was its physical construction—DP-80 weighed 15 kg, which is more than most integrated players made at the time.… Read the full article

CES 2017: Less is more in high fidelity with Accuphase, Reed and Franco Serblin

accuphase-lignea-1

Keeping it very simple, yet exquisitely curated.

Less is more.

I’m a firm believer in that credo. Especially living in one of the most expensive cities in the world for real estate. No, not New York or Tokyo: Vancouver. Space is at a premium when $1,950 gets you 570 sq.ft. So I’m going to make the case for what city dwellers could look to for a truly high-end system that does not require an entire room just to house it.… Read the full article

High End 2016: A speaker for a Grammy? Meet the Bauta.

High-End-Bauta-03013

Jacek Gawlovsky might not ring a bell for you, or me for the matter, as I do not follow-up closely the pro audio scene, but he is a much respected sound engineer, with a Grammy award and several gold and platinum records on his palmarés. While speaking to him, it became clear that while at work he realized that the current offering for studio monitors, and speakers in general, was not quite satisfying, so he designed one that fits his taste.… Read the full article
