EJ Sarmento had a trick up his sleeve for the Rocky Mountain Audiofest this year. Known primarily for his highly lauded work with DACs, streamers and amplification this year’s elaborate package of new audiophile releases included a pair of loudspeakers called Tempus ($9k). The new transducers is the first official category release for the west coast company, and at the show definitely lived up to the reputation that EJ has already established as a value-driven hifi establishment.
On top of the new Tempest, we found four other new products at the show starting with the Aura Pre ($3k) into dual Aura 1200M monos ($2k each).… Read the full article
Disclaimer: The Burson Play was sent to us in exchange for our honest opinion in this review. Burson Audio is not an affiliate or advertiser on Headfonics and the unit does not have to be returned. Many thanks to Burson for giving us this opportunity.
It has been almost seven years since we did our first Burson product review, the HA-160D in 2011. Though it was reviewed by Kyle back then I had the unit myself and loved it.… Read the full article
Disclaimer: The Tempotec Serenade iDSD sent to us for the purposes of this review is a sample and does not have to be returned. Thank you to Tempotec for giving us this opportunity.
It is very unlikely you have heard of Tempotec before never mind tested or read about the Serenade iDSD.
Tempotec is a Chinese audio manufacturer and by all accounts have been operating in one form or another for the last two decades so they are not new to audio.… Read the full article
Periodic Audio makes a terrific set of inner ear monitors at very reasonable price points. Roger Skoff and I awarded their Be IEMs an Alfie Award at the LA Audio Show. And let’s be honest, the whole theme of a periodic table of elements is quite clever. Well now we have another element to add in the table via the Nickel amplifier. I heard an early prototype at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest and was impressed. Priced at $300 USD, the Nickel now adds a robust headphone amplifier to the lineup.… Read the full article
Speakertec is a brand new company, at least in terms of audiophile years and timescale, that is based out of Berkshire, England. Not too long ago, their CEO had sent me a really interesting portable DAC/AMP.
Not only is their “Kitty” adorable, but also probably one of the coolest ideas for a portable DAC that I’ve seen in a while. Today, we will put the Kitty DAC through the paces of testing and see far it fairs in the market of late 2017.… Read the full article
OK, you’ve decided to upgrade your cables. What should you start with? Speaker cables, right? They usually are the longest wires in a system and the last to handle your delicate signal before it emerges as music.
Wrong, says cable maker Nordost. If you guessed interconnects or even your digital link, you also are mistaken. In fact, if you were going to try to improve your rig and could only change a few cables, Nordost says to focus on your power cords.… Read the full article

NAD (New Acoustic Dimension to some) invited us to a special demo at Rocky Mountain Audiofest 2017. A showdown of sorts between NAD’s iconic 3020 integrated amplifier (released in 1978) and their newest line of Hybrid Digital integrateds. My personal history with NAD electronics runs wide. Having owned four of their integrated amplifiers, two of which were the same exact model, you could easily assume I am a fan of their sound and value, and you’d be right to do so.… Read the full article
The NuPrime uDSD was actually launched a while ago so my apologies for getting this one out a bit later than I expected.
That being said, for those looking for a compact DAC/Amp solution, this is exactly the kind of device that should be on your purchasing radar.
NuPrime has been pushing the envelope in the last few years with some fantastic products but it is the uDSD that brings back a lot of memories for me personally.… Read the full article
I like Kawaii stuff. I’m a 31-year-old man and proud of it. When I first opened this Spectra’s box and realized just how small it was, I truly did not expect the product could possibly sound as nice as it does. The world of Hi-Fi seems to be shrinking, at least when it comes to great middle tier amps and DAC’s.… Read the full article
