It is almost impossible to visit every room at an audio show. To do so would require running shoes, twenty-something knees, and a stopwatch for limiting your listening window to only two minutes. Now with my excuses firmly in place, I want to take the opportunity to mention, that before this day at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in 2018, I had not reserved the requisite time to dedicate myself to in-action and listen to Nola speakers.

Accent Speaker Technology is Nola, and I don’t know any other way to put it.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: The Allure of the Rockies

Around 20 years ago, I met my friend Howard at the local Atlanta audio club.  Over time Howard and I became pals in part because we both loved Magnepan speakers.  But we also loved exploring various audio tweaks and had a lot of lively discussions around how to get the best sound for our, at the time, limited audio dollars.  Sometime around six years ago, Howard and I started to attend the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.  We both loved the show and the hospitality of the great Colorado Audio Society.… Read the full article

Sonus Faber Launches Sonetto

By | June 29th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

The 1900 Building in Kansas City, Missouri, is the original HQ for Lee Jeans, and last week I got a tour, courtesy of Mr. Karbank, the owner. The “new” 1900 Building is a very posh and modern affair, with space for industry and a fantastic restaurant, but most interesting to you, dear reader, is that Mr. Karbank is also a client of a local Sonus Faber dealer Elevated Electronics, and that relationship allowed Sonus Faber the opportunity to bring some friends in to introduce a new toy, or rather, a collection of such toys, to celebrate their 35th Anniversary.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Quintessence and Musical Surroundings, a devotion to sound

A world within the show, a Quintessence Audio LTD exhibit only requires a few steps physically (none socially) to transport you to a wonderland of high-end audio toys. For one weekend a year, the Chicago area showroom gathers up its roots and re-plants itself large at Axpona. Often taking up an entire floor of the show tower, this year Mick Survance and his crew set up shop at the proper nexus of the audio show traffic.

Given enough time in any industry, navigating the metaphorical road that is predictable success becomes intuition.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Vandersteen and AudioQuest clean-up nicely

By | June 5th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

System synergy is everything, why change the recipe if you find something tasty? We’ve seen a magic mix when you bring together Vandersteen + Audio Research + AudioQuest + AMG & HRS. They seem to come together as a perfect 5-course meal that leaves you satisfied at the end of the evening.

As I entered Vandersteen / AudioQuest / HRS Room, our resident power guru Garth Powell from AudioQuest was putting on a power demonstration. If you haven’t had a chance to watch do his dance on power, you’re missing out.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Quintessence Audio Rocks the House

By | May 29th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

I’ve been a fan of Audio Research for a while.  It started back around 1990 with a trip to Lyric Hifi in New York City where I was lucky enough to find the legendary Mike Kay.  We got along very well and he was determined to show me what high end audio could do.  We wound up listening to his Infinity IRS V setup but wound up in a more affordable room with Magnepan IIIa speakers and Audio Research gear.  I bought the IIIas but could not yet swing the ARC gear.  … Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Innuos unveils more than a new ZENith Statement

By | April 24th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Introducing a new two-box solution to something that wasn’t a problem seems kind of silly at first. The single box reference version of Innuos’ digital-everything box named ZENith Special Edition, now gets the Statement label, a second chassis, and inside all of the refinement you would expect from a no-holds-barred design. This however, is a prototype, which may be close to what the final production model is to look and sound like, with possibly a few minor tweaks still ahead.

What is new in the ZENith Statement is an entirely new double-enclosure linear power supply, along with a new power-supply design created in partnership with Dr.… Read the full article
