The Top 10 Audio Show Anthems

By | August 22nd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

Weather you love them or you hate them one thing is for sure, they help you hear the capabilities of a hifi rig just a little better. Its also one of the more discussed audiophile subjects, but never really seems to change much. Yes folks. I’m talking about audiophile songs at hifi shows.

I place very little blame on the show exhibitors themselves. They want their systems to sound the best, the logic to overplay these tracks is sound. It can also be worse from both sides of that worn out coin.… Read the full article

The Waldrep summer 2018 vacation is over. Mona, Charlie, and I returned to Southern California early last week after driving 5200 miles around the western U.S. — we visited Carmel, sped around Lake Tahoe in a 23 foot skiboat, climbed […]

Audiophile Societies – A True Story

A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article about an event that reported on some of the nonsense demos that happen at trade shows (you can visit the article by clicking here). I deliberately avoided naming the salesperson who demonstrated the “benefits” of expensive — very expensive — power cords and the name of his company out of respect for the hosts. His demo produced audible/measurable increases in the amplitude of identical music selections. A result that is impossible according to the laws of physics.… Read the full article

High-End Mischief — Again!

By | June 20th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , |

Thanks so much to everyone that has participated in the High-Resolution Challenge. And thanks for being patient while attempting to download the files…there was a bit of a bottleneck when hundreds of people wanted to download the files on the same day. I hope we all recognize that the High-Resolution Challenge is not a rigorous study. However, it does remove one of the critical flaws in most other studies but remains imperfect nonetheless. There is no way to tell if people are cheating or not — although I have confidence that my readers won’t see any advantage in peeking at the files.… Read the full article

T.H.E. Show Report and Wrap Up

By | June 5th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , |

In spite of some confusion on the run up to T.H.E. Show held this past weekend and the relatively small number of vendors, I can report that it was very successful from my perspective. The AIX Records booth was located at the entrance to the marketplace. It was hard to miss the layout of my DVDs and Blu-rays discs AND the Music and Audio: A User Guide To Better Sound book on the tables. I had my trusty Oppo Universal Player (a custom modified BCT-101 with multiple S/P DIF digital outputs) connected to a Benchmark DAC-2 HGC and a couple pairs of Oppo PM-1 headphones.… Read the full article

There are a lot of audio shows. As the owner of a high-end record label and the author of Music and Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound, I’m obligated to attend most of them. I have been a regular attendee at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, AXPONA, the Capitol Audio Fest, TAVES, the California Audio Show, The New York Audio Show, the Salon Audio, the Los Angeles Audio Show, and T.H.E. Show in Newport Beach, which is happening at the end of this week!… Read the full article

Munich High End 2018 – Looking Back

It’s been about 10 days since I returned from Munich and my first High End Show. I had to race back to Los Angeles to give final exams to my anxious students, grade papers, calculate grades, and attend graduation ceremonies. It was a whirlwind trip but got to spend some time with our youngest son Michael (who’s been living in Berlin and works for a famous Icelandic/Danish artist named Olafur Eliasson). Thankfully, my wife Mona got to spend a couple of extra days in Austria before returning to SoCal.… Read the full article

Headed to Munich High End Show!

By | May 8th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

It was a tough decision but my wife and I — AND 200 pounds of books and Blu-ray discs are headed to Munich later today. This will be the first time that I have traveled to Germany for the largest audio show in the world. I’ll be sharing a corner booth with Todd Garfinkle in Hall 3 J15 from Thursday through Sunday — unless I manage to sell all 65 books that I hauling with me and get some tourist time.… Read the full article

Do You Hear What I Hear? AXPONA Part II

By | April 21st, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I was heartened to learn from several other vendors that MQA is not a regular topic of conversation and audiophiles aren’t asking whether this or that DAC will include this completely unnecessary technology. But I do continue to read discussions and comments posted by advocates for MQA. Steven Stone’s recent 2018 Show Report contains a rather curious section that narrows down the conditions under which MQA encoded music sounds best (if it’s supposed to sound different from the master at all!).… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018 Show Report – Part I

By | April 20th, 2018|Categories: Real HD-Audio|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As a former Michigander, I can appreciate that the weather really sucks for three months in the midwest. But I wasn’t really prepared for the onslaught of high winds, hail, and even snow at this year’s AXPONA 2018 event in Chicago this past weekend. Winter has not given up its hold on the windy city and all points north. My wife traveled to Madison and shoveled snow. Amazing! But there we were hauling a couple of heavy suitcases into the marketplace ballroom on Thursday afternoon and extracting the boxes that were waiting for us at booth 424.… Read the full article
