Fight the power with AudioQuest’s PowerQuest2 & 3 AC filters

By | May 22nd, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

How many power sockets are occupied by your hi-fi system? Asking this question of Darko.Audio’s YouTube community, 1,300 respondents begat the following results:

That’s invaluable intel for a company like AudioQuest who this week formally announce the availability of their PowerQuest2 (US$199) and PowerQuest3 (US$299) AC filters, teased for some time on the audio show circuit.

The name of this game is affordability in which designer Garth Powell (interviewed here) brings his electrical noise reduction smarts to lower price points.… Read the full article

AudioQuest, AudioQuest, and AudioQuest | High End 2019

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by The LSA Group

I had a very pleasant surprise at High End 2019 in Munich. For the last handful of high-end audio trade shows, I’ve been assigned to cover AudioQuest. I usually choose to cover this brand because I have many of their products in for review, and also because I have plenty of experience with them. Every time I walk into the so-called AudioQuest room, however, it turns out to be a room featuring a system from other manufacturers and they just happen to be using AudioQuest cables.… Read the full article

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by The LSA Group

Friday was my first full day at High End Munich 2019. Thursday, the first day of the show, was sabotaged by a combination of a long-ass sleepless night on the plane followed by a late check-in time and, further confirmed by a profound need for a shower. By the time I was suitable for public appearances, the show was over for the day. I still met Scot Hull–who had a minor passport kerfuffle that almost prevented him from making it–and Panagiotis Karavitas for a night in Marienplatz for fried pig knuckles (I went with sausages and sauerkraut instead), real Bavarian pretzels and lot of German dark ale.… Read the full article

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by The LSA Group

I’m heading out today to High End Munich 2019, the biggest hi-fi show on earth. I’m an old veteran of what used to be the biggest hi-fi show on earth, the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, but that kind of fizzled out slowly over the last few years when it comes to “specialty audio” and most of us slowly came to our senses and stopped spending the big money to go sit in a lonely room for four days.… Read the full article

AudioQuest, McIntosh and B&W | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

AudioQuest, McIntosh and B&W. That almost seems like the answer to an audiophile question that begins with the words, “What would you buy if…?” I’ve met a bunch of New York audiophiles since I moved to this state more than three years ago, and people around here have a hankering for all things McIntosh Labs and not just because they’re located in nearby Binghamton. When you ask them what speakers they prefer, a surprising amount of them say “B&W.” When you ask how they’re gonna hook it all up, they’ll tell you AudioQuest.… Read the full article

AudioQuest, Vandersteen, Channel D | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

I just checked out the AudioQuest and Vandersteen room back at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest last fall, so walking into this room at AXPONA 2019 felt like it might be more of the same–an excellent same, but. Within seconds I noticed the presence of Rob Robinson of Channel D rushing around the giant room, keeping the music flowing, while Richard Vandersteen sat in the back row of the room and nodded approvingly.… Read the full article

In absentia: an AXPONA 2019 preview

By | April 11th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

AXPONA is the USA’s largest regional audio show. It takes place this weekend at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center in Chicago. I won’t be there. Ha! As with every year, this Stateside event is too close to Munich High-End to justify punching a 12-day hole in my review schedule: five days to get to and from Chicago; five days to report on what I saw; and two or three more days for the double dose of jetlag to subside.… Read the full article

What is electrical noise and how does it affect your DAC?

By | March 25th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , |

We’ve been here eleventy billion times before: the sound quality of a digital audio system doesn’t rely simply on the safe arrival of each and every bit but how accurately those bits are timed into the DAC chip. Any mis-timing is called jitter. Electrical noise – entering hi-fi components via the mains and via cables acting as antennae – can seriously disturb the timing accuracy of a DAC’s clock oscillators.

Not only. According to Garth Powell, Direct of Power/Engineering at AudioQuest, electrical noise will also make its way into the analogue section of a DAC to potentially mask the very low-level signal retrieval for which it was designed/purchased.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: Magico, Luxman, Audioquest, Critical Mass Systems

By | March 17th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

Suncoast Audio had another fantastic-sounding room nearby on the seventh floor and Peter Mackay was on hand playing some righteous digital through the A3s.  The Magico A3s ($12K) have been an unqualified success for the company and it’s easy to see why.  They have the classic Magico sound with deep and tight bass and a nice open sound for the mids and highs.  They also are solid being constructed of machines 6061 aircraft aluminum cabinet similar to the firm’s far more expensive offerings.  … Read the full article

AudioQuest Mythical Creatures | CES 2019

By | February 17th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

A must-visit room at any audio event is AudioQuest (website) if only to see their esteemed engineer Garth Powell.  It’s absolutely fine for us as audiophiles to be subjective, but Garth’s engineering curiosity to understand why something is the way it is, is so refreshing.

Garth Powell debuting AudioQuest Mythical Creatures cables

Garth was originally hired six years ago to develop a line of power products, resulting first in the Niagara 7000 Power Conditioner and more recently the Storm Series power cables, both of which currently reside in my listening room. … Read the full article
