AudioQuest, Folk Heros and Mythical Creatures – CES 2019

AudioQuest Mythical Creatures

The first official day of 2-channel at CES started in the Venetian on Wednesday morn. It was my second presentation by engineer Garth Powell of AudioQuest in the past few years, which is always a well-spoken and entertaining affair to attend. The subject of today’s coffee talk was two new series of speaker cables named after Folk Heros and Mythical Creatures.

While it’s clear that the debate over cables on the fringes of audiophile comment sections and forums shows no signs of slowing down, it is worth mentioning that most sensible audiophiles don’t jump to either radical edge of the argument with much haste.… Read the full article

BLOG: 2018 Awards – Lieven’s Selection

This is an article many of you, well mostly the companies actually, always anxiously wait for. This is the article in which we award the best gear of 2018. First up: My own selection!!

2018 Awards – Year overview

It was another great year that flew by even faster than last year. A year in which we somewhat saw of a comeback of desktop / full sized gear. That being said though, we’re still living in a world where DAPs and IEMs are the most used.… Read the full article

Cables & consistency

By | December 11th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

Tell the Average Joe not versed in the double trouble of electrical noise and jitter that you dropped US$350 on a USB cable and s/he’ll likely question your sanity. Audiophiles know what Joe does not: that not all USB connections are born equal.

For this commentator, there’s no doubting the Curious USB cable’s audible superiority to vanilla wire – some of which doesn’t even meet the USB spec. The Curious also knocks out other audiophile-aimed offerings like AudioQuest’s Carbon. Old Yella lends music more pep, more detail and a better sense of space but without straying into the Carbon’s occasional brightness — a handful of reasons why the Curious has been my goto USB wire for the past three years.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Eggleston Works, Brinkmann, AudioQuest

By | November 28th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , |

It seems like every time I run into Anthony Chiarella, good sound is present. Brinkmann Audio turntables at the HiFiBuys event in Atlanta?  Good sound. EgglestonWorks speakers with a full Brinkmann stack in Denver?  Good sound.  No, scratch that.  Great sound.

I’ve known that Brinkmann can make great turntables.  Then a year ago I heard the Nyquist DAC.  Oh yeah, that’s very nice.  House sound of Brinkmann?  Analog.  Smooth. Resolving.  Oh yeah, the good sound that’s not “too hi-fi”.  I’ve never seen Mr.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: Fern & Roby, Linear Tube Audio, Black Cat Cable; ring in a new era

Fern & Roby take us on a journey into the wide open bandwidth, while Linear Tube Audio rings in a new era for tube integrated amplifiers, Black Cat Cable crosses our path.

ES003321

Sunday at an audio show is always a little bit slower, a little more relaxed, and a whole lot more “are we done yet?” Many of us on the press side are tying up loose ends, or returning to our favourite rooms to squeeze in another listen. I on the other hand am still clamoring to hear everything I can.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: The Audio Alternative, Audioquest, Vandersteen, AMG, Lyra and VTL

By | November 16th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

I was enthusiastic about checking out the Audioquest room at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Just a few months ago I met Audioquest’s Bill Low when he strolled into one of my dealer’s stores while I was visiting. We had a wonderful conversation about the audio industry in general and then we sat down and listened to a wonderful system that consisted of the brands I distributed, all wired with Audioquest cable. It sounded wonderful. I was looking forward to seeing Bill once more.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: ListenUp, GoldenEar, Hegel, Audioquest and Shut Up and Take My Money

I don’t have a lot of experience with GoldenEar speakers, although plenty of audiophiles, not to mention most my old dealers, have given me an earful—they offer outstanding value, they’re incredibly dynamic, and whatever I’m representing better be able to compete with these products from audio legends Sandy Gross, Don Givogue and Bob Johnston.

When I walked into the darkened ListenUp/Hegel/GoldenEar room at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I was taken aback by the simplicity of the set-up which consisted of just the GoldenEar Triton Reference loudspeakers ($8500/pair), a Hegel Mohican CD player ($5000) and a Hegel H590 integrated amplifier/DAC ($11,000), all wired up with Audioquest cabling.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Wavelength Audio, Vaughn Loudspeakers, AudioQuest

By | November 9th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio continues to be innovative and a much sought-after designer.  This year’s Wavelength room at RMAF was sublime.  There were two big news items but I want to talk to one device in particular that is still in development but it is one that I believe can have a big impact on the current world of computer audio.  This is Gordon’s latest device, the “Spacelator.”

To set the context properly, think of a typical modern home today.  … Read the full article

dCS Network Bridge and Vivaldi DAC receive MQA and juice my streaming

By | November 3rd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Ever since I reviewed the dCS Network Bridge a year ago,  I’ve been enjoying a lot more digital music. YES, I still prefer dropping the needle but the convenience of a dCS Network Bridge + dCS Vivaldi DAC + ROON is tough to beat.

I find myself re-discovering CDs I ripped years ago, but more often on the hunt for more high resolution music.  Its been a bit of a disease, each Friday around 4pm, heading over to www.superhirez.com to look for what new music was released that week. … Read the full article
