RMAF 2018: The Audio Alternative, Audioquest, Vandersteen, AMG, Lyra and VTL

By | November 16th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , |

I was enthusiastic about checking out the Audioquest room at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Just a few months ago I met Audioquest’s Bill Low when he strolled into one of my dealer’s stores while I was visiting. We had a wonderful conversation about the audio industry in general and then we sat down and listened to a wonderful system that consisted of the brands I distributed, all wired with Audioquest cable. It sounded wonderful. I was looking forward to seeing Bill once more.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: ListenUp, GoldenEar, Hegel, Audioquest and Shut Up and Take My Money

By | November 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

I don’t have a lot of experience with GoldenEar speakers, although plenty of audiophiles, not to mention most my old dealers, have given me an earful—they offer outstanding value, they’re incredibly dynamic, and whatever I’m representing better be able to compete with these products from audio legends Sandy Gross, Don Givogue and Bob Johnston.

When I walked into the darkened ListenUp/Hegel/GoldenEar room at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I was taken aback by the simplicity of the set-up which consisted of just the GoldenEar Triton Reference loudspeakers ($8500/pair), a Hegel Mohican CD player ($5000) and a Hegel H590 integrated amplifier/DAC ($11,000), all wired up with Audioquest cabling.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Wavelength Audio, Vaughn Loudspeakers, AudioQuest

By | November 9th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio continues to be innovative and a much sought-after designer.  This year’s Wavelength room at RMAF was sublime.  There were two big news items but I want to talk to one device in particular that is still in development but it is one that I believe can have a big impact on the current world of computer audio.  This is Gordon’s latest device, the “Spacelator.”

To set the context properly, think of a typical modern home today.  … Read the full article

dCS Network Bridge and Vivaldi DAC receive MQA and juice my streaming

By | November 3rd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Ever since I reviewed the dCS Network Bridge a year ago,  I’ve been enjoying a lot more digital music. YES, I still prefer dropping the needle but the convenience of a dCS Network Bridge + dCS Vivaldi DAC + ROON is tough to beat.

I find myself re-discovering CDs I ripped years ago, but more often on the hunt for more high resolution music.  Its been a bit of a disease, each Friday around 4pm, heading over to to look for what new music was released that week. … Read the full article

by Eric Shook

Most people walked into this room and went straight for the amps and speakers, or electronics and cables. My eye was drawn to the turntable, for a simple reason, it has three electronic capacitive touch speed controls which change color when in action. I was hoping the digital would be playing in the room so I could take a stab at fiddling with the buttons, but alas is my life — it wasn’t in the cards.

The AMG Viella turntable ($23,750 USD) was outfitted with a smooth looking Cherry wood trim skirt, and on-brand 12JT Turbo arm and cable.Read the full article

Wavelength Ethernet Spacelator | RMAF 2018

By | October 10th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Wavelength Ethernet Spacelator prototype

Gordon Rankin of Wavelength Audio is no stranger to controversy. He’s the guy that single-handedly brought computer-based audio into the realm of high-fidelity with “asynchronous USB”, and most such products today either use his work or leverages his ideas. That’s a nice way of saying that he had to slog through an unending bog of nonsense from partially informed but fully opinionated audiophiles that have, at various times, hailed him as both heretic and hero. So, when he introduces a new product like the “Wavelength Ethernet Spacelator”, you just have to cringe along with him.… Read the full article
