AXPONA 2018: Lee’s Best of Show

By | June 14th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I was really burned out from a long work week at nearby Northwestern University.  I was so looking forward to AXPONA as the medicine to my working man blues.  The only thing stopping me was insane traffic between Evanston and Schaumburg where the new hotel venue was. This was post-apocalyptic Atlanta traffic.  But finally we arrived and it was worth the hassle. AXPONA was really superb this year.  The Renaissance Center staff was friendly and the venue was beautiful.  Very spacious, it took getting used to but the second floor had lots of conversation pits and the food was generally good.

Show Report and Best of Show – Axpona 2018

By | June 14th, 2018|Categories: Audio Federation|Tags: , |

I have not been doing a lot of ‘Best of Show’ reports lately. The ones I read out there in the wild internet chose rooms apparently at random [or as a function of how many advertising dollars were spent this year] and I do not want to be a participant in such a worthless and misleading tradition like this [and in public, on the internet, too! Have they no shame? ;-)].

But people like them and so I will contribute this version of what I think a Best Of Show might be like on Opposite Earth, where I used to live and where things were supposed to make sense and people were supposed to be honorable some of the time.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Best of The Show, Wrap-Up, and Why I am an Audiophile

Audio shows are more than new gear releases and demonstrations to me. They are a chance to connect with the strange personalities that embody what it means to be an eccentric. Sometimes our interests can be socially unfortunate, but it’s during these few moments of the year at audio shows where we audiophiles can feel normal in our priorities, lusts, and musical tastes.

AXPONA 2018 proved to be our largest display of geekdom yet.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Quintessence and Musical Surroundings, a devotion to sound

A world within the show, a Quintessence Audio LTD exhibit only requires a few steps physically (none socially) to transport you to a wonderland of high-end audio toys. For one weekend a year, the Chicago area showroom gathers up its roots and re-plants itself large at Axpona. Often taking up an entire floor of the show tower, this year Mick Survance and his crew set up shop at the proper nexus of the audio show traffic.

Given enough time in any industry, navigating the metaphorical road that is predictable success becomes intuition.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: The Sound Environment and the simple sound of unity

I met two wonderful men in a hotel elevator at Axpona. It’s not often that you get to freely say such things as a man but that’s a topic for another time and place. A discussion started brewing on the elevator between Alan Kafton (of The Cable Cooker) and myself about show turnout, and the sounds we’ve experienced so far.

As in most real-life social settings (the opposite is true for social media) strangers don’t usually interject themselves into a conversation, but considering everyone at the show is considered audiophile brethren — I was welcoming to all invasion.… Read the full article

Photography Wars – Axpona 2018

Photography is an important part of every high-end audio show – but these days everyone has a smartphone, and things can go wrong… 🙂

AXPONA 2018: Studio Electric, Fern & Roby, Zu Audio, Modwright; All-American Performance

There have been a growing number of monitor/bookshelf designs that I’ve encountered recently which impress me more than towers from other manufacturers. Segregating speakers firstly by whether they are bookshelf monitors or floor-standing doesn’t make as much sense as it used to.

ES000106

I currently have the Studio Electric M4 Monitors in for review, and comparing the looks of the updated models on show at Axpona to the ones I have at home, it seems they have hit maturity. The formerly rudimentary looks in the M4 review samples, have now grown up to include rich maple veneers, and a new aluminum grill worthy of its own photoshoot and review.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2018: Daedalus, Modwright, WyWires, a vein that continues to produce gold

A perennial favorite of the audio show circuit and with good reason. Here begins the benchmark for the audio show experience. More than a room of friendly and engaging manufacturers, this collection of craftsman also enjoy great music and the passion in being audiophiles. Each one compelled by a need for creative expression to produce some of the finest individual components on the market. Collectively they have constructed some of the best synergy you will find at any show.

AXPONA 2018: Italians do it better, Toska Audio presents Gold Note

By | June 7th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

ES000175

I personally have never seen a Gold Note product at an audio show, and I doubt anyone who habitually remains stateside has seen one either. Making their US debut at Axpona with a famously European style and reputation, Gold Note gives us a distinctly Italian music listening experience. Another completely one branded system at the show, this unique powerhouse system will rock your Marcoliani’s off.

ES000174

Gold Note was taken on by Toska Audio about one year ago. Already a well known brand in Europe when Peter Mulligan of Toska fell in love with their intelligent phono pre-amp.… Read the full article
