Lone Star Audio Fest 2019 Hootenanny

DALLAS (PTA) — Everything I thoroughly enjoy about audio shows seldom has to do with audio. As for the Lone Star Audio Fest 2019 in Dallas,Texas, it proved itself to be one of the more rambunctious of America’s hi-fi events. The Lone Star Audio Fest pulled-off great sound, and an equally great party atmosphere.

From sunrise-to-sunset — and often those dark hours in between — this festival of sound is equal parts “High-End Audio Show” and “a Drinking Community with a Hi-Fi problem.Read the full article

Eric’s Best of Show | AXPONA 2019

EFS AXPONA 2019

CHICAGO (PTA) — Despite the sometimes overwhelming size that shows like AXPONA 2019 portray, for me this exhibition still represents the largest collection of small businesses I have ever seen under one roof. Most of the exhibitors are indeed “mom-and-pop shops”. Most of these audio companies have only five to seven key employees, and often with a single figurehead wearing five of the most crucial hats within that company. Those being: the money, the designer, the face, the communicator, and the boss.Read the full article

The Occasional 2018 Buyer’s Guide

By | December 23rd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , |

The Editors have voted, weighed in, argued, smashed cups to the ground and called for more; they have bitten thumbs, quarreled, sallied forth; they have met the enemy and they were not themselves; they have broken through enemy lines and routed the enemies; they have since returned to their castles, and are now enjoying hot toddies and luxurious foot rubs while listening to “Christmas Crooners” on Qobuz. Good times.

In the peaceful aftermath of cheerful destruction, we have a thing: The Occasional 2018 Buyer’s Guide.… Read the full article

D’Agostino Relentless Monoblock Amp | First Listen

By | December 21st, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

Dan D’Agostino’s new reference Relentless Monoblock amplifier (website) weighs in at a record 570 pounds, can dance beautifully at 1 watt and will party all the way 6000 watts into 2 ohms when driven by a 220v electrical circuit. Although it takes 4 strong dudes to drop it in place, once warmed up and you’re past the dent in the checking account, I don’t think you’ll ever want to move it once you power it up. Two years in the making, Dan D’Agostino describes the development as a “relentless pursuit to make it work”, and such where the name comes from.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Gene Rubin, Harbeth 30.1 make music, magic

Simple, musical, outstanding.

Attending the three biggest U.S. high-end shows last year, I got to hear a lot of speakers. Many were new, exotic, state-of-the-art designs, driven by megabuck equipment. A fair number of those produced impressive sound.

laas8Yet, as the year drew to a close and Part-Time Audiophile began assembling its Best of 2016 list, my mind kept going back to a simple set of box speakers that had a history going back decades. They were the Harbeth 40.2s ($14,795/pair USD).… Read the full article

Best of 2016…finally

By Lam Seng Fatt

Finally, I am able to come up with my ‘Best of 2016’ list of components. Like I mentioned in my earlier posts, I had to listen to the Bryston products for longer periods of time before I could make up my mind.

So I shall kick off with the Bryston components.
