When Oppo Digital announced its departure from the Blu-ray player business in April of this year, a huge question mark hung in the air. Who could step up and fill the void in the marketplace? Cambridge Audio would steer the would-be Oppo buyer to its CXUHD 4K universal disc player, which offers great performance at its $700 price point. But the CXUHD is a transport only, so it has no internal digital-to-analog converter. For audiophiles, one of the biggest draws of Oppo’s UDP-205 was that player’s superb DAC section, based on the flagship ES9038 Pro Sabre chip from ESS.… Read the full article

Panasonic first announced its forthcoming flagship DP-UB9000 Ultra HD Blu-ray player at the company’s annual Panacon product launch event in February. That announcement may not have made huge headlines at the time, but it gained more significance in April when Oppo Digital announced its departure from the disc-spinner business, which it had all but dominated in recent years.… Read the full article
UDP-203 & UDP-205 Introduction
It’s getting pretty boring reviewing Oppo Blu-ray players. Make no mistake, I mean this as a compliment, of course. This is the 4th-generation universal Blu-ray and 1st-generation Ultra HD Blu-ray player platform for Oppo coming in two flavors: the UDP-203 and souped-up UDP-205.
Both players are virtually identical in audio and video capabilities in that they play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with HDCP 2.2 and BT2020 compatibility, regular and 3D Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, Audio CD; High Dynamic Range (HDR10), support for Dolby Vision (recent firmware update); dual HDMI outputs – HDMI 2.0 for UHD and HDMI 1.4 for audio; and an HDMI 2.0 input port for external streaming devices or set-top boxes and last, but not least, networking capability to stream from your NAS or external HDD loaded up with music and video files.… Read the full article

Disc Player Gets an Audio Performance Boost
announced their UDP-205 4K Ultra HD Audiophile Blu-ray Disc player is available
for purchase. A step-up version of the recently released UDP-203, the UDP-205
brings top-of-the-line audio performance to a universal player that supports 4K
Ultra HD Blu-ray and many other digital audio and video formats. The step up from the UDP-203 to UDP-205 is similar to their predecessors; BDP-103 to BDP-105 Universal Blu-ray players. You can see just how significant of an upgrade you get from the analog audio side peering inside of those units and reviewing our test reports.
OK, so you got a 4K
Ultra TV for Christmas and now you need something to watch that isn’t
upconverted from 1080p or streamed from Netflix. Now you’re in luck, OPPO
announced the release of the new UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc player which
will be ready for shipping in early 2017. The $549 price point makes them a solid
contender for an affordable 4K Blu-ray player already, but considering that
most of the reviewers here at Audioholics use OPPO standard Blu-ray players as
their source material for listening tests for their audio equipment and home theater
reviews we’re confident that the new OPPO UDP-203 will also be one of the
better UHD Blu-ray players on the market at any price.
Yamaha enthusiasts and audiophiles rejoice! Yamaha
introduced its new high performance Blu-ray players this month with their BD-S681
and AVENTAGE BD-A1060. Both models are built with the goal of reproducing
sound, music and video with the quality for which Yamaha is known. Although
they don’t support the new Ultra HD video format, they do employ advanced 4K
Ultra HD upscaling technology to turn high-definition source material into
crystal clear images for your premium big-screen 4K HDTV. Moreover, both Blu-ray Disc players offer support for full
HD Blu-ray Discs, 3D Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, SACDs and standard audio CDs.
