DRM’s Progress in India

India is currently rolling out the largest digital radio deployment worldwide, as the public service broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) is upgrading the country’s terrestrial broadcast infrastructure for the future. The broadcast standard of choice for this project is Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), the universal, open digital broadcasting standard for all coverage needs. Fraunhofer IIS to Present Several CES Debuts

MPEG-H Audio Trial During European Athletics Championships 2018

By Adrian Murtaza | The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), together with EBU members BBC, France Télévisions, IRT, RAI and ZDF, as well as a range of technology partners, conducted what has been probably the most complex broadcast trial in Europe so far at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin. The trial demonstrated the world’s first live production and distribution of Ultra High Definition (UHD) content, with High Frame Rates (HFR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), and Next Generation Audio (NGA). Fraunhofer IIS MPEG-H Authoring Plugin Now Available for Download

At the 51st annual IBC Show in Amsterdam from September 14-18, 2018, Fraunhofer IIS is proud to announce the availability of the MPEG-H Authoring Plugin. TV broadcast professionals can download the plugin, which enables the creation of MPEG-H Audio scenes, from the Fraunhofer IIS website. MPEG­-H Audio supports several use cases for interactivity of object­based audio, such as defining of switching groups or presets for selection by the end-user. MPEG-H metadata contains all relevant information for reproduction and rendering in arbitrary reproduction layouts: in­formation about the audio components inside the bit stream and their hierarchical structure, as well as restrictive metadata by which the content creator can allow or limit the interactive possibilities that can be accessed by the consumer.… Read the full article

Fraunhofer IIS introduces SDK for JPEG XS image coding

Fraunhofer IIS presents its new Software Development Kit (SDK) with optimized functions to code images with the new JPEG XS codec. JPEG XS is suited for use in production environments where high resolution image data of up to 8k/60p UHD video must be transferred via Ethernet. At the IBC Show in Amsterdam, the coding specialists of Fraunhofer IIS are demonstrating the JPEG XS codec as complete live stream with real-time playback. Increasing amounts of permanent data with high resolution and high dynamic range will briefly swamp the transmission capabilities over long-distance cable lengths in studio environments, and while using existing coaxial cabling solutions.… Read the full article

IBC 2018: Fraunhofer IIS and Vewd Demonstrate MPEG-H Audio Support in HbbTV

At the IBC Show in Amsterdam, Fraunhofer IIS and Vewd, the world’s largest smart TV OTT software provider, will showcase a HbbTV demo that includes DVB DASH streaming on a set-top box running Vewd Core and Vewd HbbTV Module with MPEG-H Audio support, as defined in the latest HbbTV 2.0.2 specification. From Microphone to Speaker – Fraunhofer IIS Presents MPEG-H Audio Real-Time Chain at IBC

At the IBC Show, taking place from September 14 – 18, 2018 in in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase a complete production and transmission chain for the MPEG-H Audio system at booth #B80 in hall 8. The equipment includes MPEG­-H monitoring units for real-time monitoring and content authoring, postproduction tools, MPEG­-H Audio real-time broadcast encoders, as well as decoders in professional and consumer receivers. Live production: MPEG-H-enabled hardware devices for live production are the first section of the chain, including a LAWO Audio production console, as well as the Jünger Audio MMA and Linear Acoustic AMS authoring and monitoring systems, which are able to generate the metadata “on the fly” during live broadcasting.… Read the full article

ORPHEUS – the Movie

The ORPHEUS project, pioneering the development of an end-to-end object-based media chain for audio content, was officially concluded in May 2018, when the second and final ORPHEUS workshop was held at Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in Munich. There, the ten project partners presented their findings to an auditorium filled with more than 100 broadcast and audio professionals from all over the globe. Successful Demonstration of Interactive Audio Streaming using MPEG-H Audio at Norwegian Broadcaster NRK

Representatives from Norwegian broadcasters, technology companies and other invited experts had the opportunity to enjoy the 2018 Football World Cup matches from Russia using interactive audio, in the NRK premises in Oslo, Norway. Successful Terrestrial And Satellite Reception Of MPEG-H Audio During The Roland Garros French Open

The MPEG-H TV Audio System, developed primarily by Fraunhofer IIS, passed a major milestone in Europe when it was successfully transmitted via satellite and DVB-T2 in the live Ultra HD TV broadcast channel of the Roland Garros French Open tennis tournament. France Télévisions and the French Tennis Federation, in collaboration with TDF and FRANSAT, a subsidiary of Eutelsat, successfully tested the transmission and reception of MPEG-H Audio immersive sound over DVB-T2 and satellite during the Roland Garros tennis tournament. The MPEG-H Audio stream was included in the regular live Ultra HD broadcast of the Philippe Chatrier court, starting with May 27th and will be broadcast live until the end of the tournament on June 10th.… Read the full article
