High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

It must be hard to be Peter Ledermann of SoundSmith. When Scot Hull and I approached his booth at High-End 2019, he was getting ready to leave because he had to do a “talk.” (From what we heard, it was a last minute thing and he was scurrying around trying to get his room covered.) He asked us to please come back later. When I returned early the next day to cover the SoundSmith room, he had a line of people waiting to speak with him.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

AXPONA 2019 was a high-end audio show that had a little more meaning for me than usual, probably since the last show I did as an exhibitor was AXPONA 2016. I remember enjoying the 630 mile drive between Rochester and Chicago three years ago, along lakes Ontario and Erie, through states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. This time was a little tougher than usual since I had just returned from Hawaii the day before, thanks to Hawaiian Airlines’ new eleven-hour non-stop flight from Honolulu to JFK.… Read the full article

Bricasti and Tidal | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

I covered Bricasti and Tidal last fall during the Capital Audiofest, so this was another case of walking into a room at AXPONA 2019 and thinking that I knew what was going to happen and then being totally wrong. The combination of Bricasti components and Tidal speakers is, almost by definition, a primer in resolution and authority. Or, as I put it last November, “I’m not a music lover who necessarily needs this level of resolution to be happy, but when it’s surrounded by such a natural and musical whole, I find it positively intoxicating.” After seeing these two brands together in Chicago, I learned a couple of new things about these two fascinating companies and their impressive products.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

I just checked out the AudioQuest and Vandersteen room back at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest last fall, so walking into this room at AXPONA 2019 felt like it might be more of the same–an excellent same, but. Within seconds I noticed the presence of Rob Robinson of Channel D rushing around the giant room, keeping the music flowing, while Richard Vandersteen sat in the back row of the room and nodded approvingly.… Read the full article

Spatial Audio, Linear Tube Audio, ANTICABLES | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

Ever since I heard Spatial Audio, Linear Tube Audio and ANTICABLES at the Capital Audiofest last fall, I’ve had a bit of a crush. The combination of these open baffle speakers with the ZOTL amplifier circuitry designed by David Berning create a lucid, warm and detailed sound that seems totally out-of-whack with the relatively low cost of the components. After that first encounter, I told myself that I could easily own that system in another life, one where I was still an audiophile but a little less obsessed about it.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

I believe this is the third time I’ve reported on the combination of BorderPatrol, Volti Audio and Triode Wire Labs in the last few months, so you’d think I’d have a handle on the sound by now. When I entered Room 688 at AXPONA 2019, I thought okay, these guys again, I’m gonna be impressed as usual but will I have anything new to say about this otherwise unique system?… Read the full article

CAF 2018: Marc’s Wrap-Up

By | December 22nd, 2018|Categories: Audio Federation, Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

The last couple of months have been a blur. Just days after I joined the team at Part-Time Audiophile and The Occasional, I was off to Denver to cover the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. Then, just a few weeks later, I was driving down to Rockville, Maryland to cover the 2018 Capital Audiofest. Then I’d been home about a week before I headed out to San Diego to cover the debut of the Dan D’Agostino Relentless monoblock amplifiers and YG Acoustics Sonja XV speakers at Alma Audio.… Read the full article
