JICO Seto Hori Cartridge

By | October 24th, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

The Nippon Jewel Industry CO LTD is typically referred to as JICO, a company many analog hobbyists are familiar with. JICO has a long and distinguished pedigree in the field of manufacturing, as it began producing steel sewing needles for the kimono industry 140 years ago, and diamond tipped phono cartridge styli in 1964. The company is in a remote location, over 200 miles from Osaka, which is the nearest city. In the early years, this extreme degree of geographic isolation meant that JICO employees had to fabricate and maintain all the machinery, jigs, molds, and stamps that were needed to produce their product.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018 – Analog

RMAF 2018 - Analog

The analog renaissance appears to be stronger than ever with a number of new analog products making their worldwide or U.S. debuts at RMAF. While the sheer number of new offerings didn’t compare with the Munich Show (nothing does), there were still plenty of mouth-watering turntables, tonearms, cartridges, tape decks, and phonostages helping to produce some of the best sounds at the show. Better yet, several manufacturers and distributors were offering complete turntable packages with integrated tonearms and pre-fitted cartridges to help customers get going quickly, and these “ready-to-go” analog front ends were not limited to entry-level offerings.… Read the full article

Hana EH moving-coil cartridge Review

By | October 13th, 2018|Categories: Dagogo|Tags: , |

I have been using the Hana EH high output moving coil phono cartridge for the past two years, and I had a chance to meet the man responsible for the Hana cartridge distribution, Mr. Masahiro Shibazaki of Sibatech when I was in Japan last year. His company, Sibatech, was originally contracted to do worldwide export distribution for cartridge manufacturer ExcelSound Corporation, which designs and builds the Hana cartridges. The cartridge would be sold under the brand name Abis Hana. There are four moving coil models available.

Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti Phono Cartridge

Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti Phono Cartridge

The Ortofon MC Windfeld Ti is the newest version of the original MC Windfeld cartridge. Ten years ago, Ortofon’s chief engineer, Leif Johannsen, created the original MC Windfeld as a tribute to Ortofon’s former longtime chief engineer Per Windfeld. This was Johannsen’s first high-end cartridge using the Replicant 100 stylus and a completely new (for Ortofon) motor design to improve dynamic capability. At that time, the 80th anniversary MC Jubilee was the second highest model in the Ortofon lineup. The following year, 2009, the Cadenza series was introduced.… Read the full article

Two Moving Magnets and a Moving Iron

Two Moving Magnets and a Moving Iron

Though you wouldn’t necessarily know it from the proliferation of moving-coil pickups throughout the high-end these last thirty-plus years and counting, during the first two decades of stereophonic reproduction moving-magnet cartridges dominated the market. Most serious audiophiles were classical, jazz, pop, and folk enthusiasts whose sonic references were to music performed on acoustic instruments in real-world venues. The virtues of moving-magnets suited these tastes, which valued low distortion, flat frequency-response, and tonal neutrality or, failing that, musically natural tonal balances. Perhaps best of all from the standpoint of record wear, mm’s were not only superior trackers—surely no distortion associated with …… Read the full article
