2019 Golden Ear Awards: Anthony H. Cordesman

Magico S7 Loudspeaker $58,000 I’ve been using the Magico S7 as a reference for some years now, and the only nitpick I can make that it may be too revealing. It does a superb job of providing every bit of musical detail throughout the entire frequency spectrum at every level of dynamics from the lowest passages to loudness levels far beyond what I want to hear. It does so with as detailed and musical a soundstage as any speaker around. Its only problem is that you do hear the entire recording with no forgiving colorations—and you also hear the virtues …… Read the full article

2019 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

The high-end audio industry approached this year’s Denver show with more than a bit of trepidation. The venue was new and unknown, and the cost to exhibit significantly higher, leading many potential exhibitors to take a wait-and-see attitude. Consequently, the show was smaller than in previous years, with about 80 rooms. Moreover, poor communication about the “trade-only” day on the Thursday before the show’s public opening on Friday resulted in many exhibitors thinking that the trade day was actually set-up day.… Read the full article

The Audiophile Ecosystem

To a non-audiophile, the passion for good sound can seem like a remarkably solitary endeavor. That civilian walks past our listening room and glances knowingly at the single chair facing the loudspeakers. Even if we’ve made the expansive gesture of replacing that chair with a sofa, the audiophile-in-charge is likely to insist that all present take a turn in the “sweet spot.” This is an experience that is, quite often, optimized for one, and the sound-conscious music-lover frequently finds himself alone in his sacred space at the end of a long day—and not necessarily unhappy about it.… Read the full article

Koetsu Rosewood Signature Moving-Coil Phono Cartridge

Yoshiaki Sugano (1907–2002) is truly an iconic figure, whose place in high-end audio’s hall of fame is most secure. His legacy is that of a consummate artisan, whose masterwork moving-coil cartridge designs propelled the art to a pinnacle not previously known in its day. Their magic has assuredly not faded over the years. He founded Koetsu in the 1970s and chose a company name to honor a distant ancestor—the famous Japanese craftsman, potter, and calligrapher, Honami Koetsu (1558–1637). Sugano greatly admired Koetsu and throughout his life faithfully practiced the master’s credo, that “nothing so exquisite exists in this world as …… Read the full article

Etsuro Gold Moving Coil Cartridge: Reference Redefined

The New Etsuro Gold Moving Coil cartridge, riding on the Kronos Helena tonearm over the Kronos Sparta Turntable

I will admit to more than just a fleeting piquing of curiosity when Believe High Fidelity Owner Joshua Masongsong published a Facebook post just after the first of this year that the first Etsuro Gold MC cartridge, from Japan’s esteemed Etsuro Urushi, had arrived in the US. My offhand reply to that post, merely a request that he “…keep us informed” as to what he heard, led to his offer to have me do this review just 10 days later.… Read the full article

Can You Build a Better Mousetrap?

This is not so much a review of a new cartridge as it is about what happens when you take a tried and true cartridge and make significant modifications to the body, cantilever, and stylus of the cartridge. To down play the impact of cartridge body design and material is to lack an understanding of the overall cartridge as a package. Just look at the existing field of phono cartridges and the materials selected for housings.… Read the full article

Building a Listening Room

Building a Listening Room

Building a dedicated space for music listening is the ultimate commitment to the hobby. It’s expensive and complex, and when you’re finished there’s no guarantee that the room will sound good. But if you take that plunge and the stars align, a room specifically designed for optimizing sound quality can allow a high-end system to realize its greatest potential. I recently realized a lifelong goal of building a serious listening room and will share my experience with you. Although I had built two homes before with dedicated rooms, this one is more ambitious.… Read the full article
