CES 2019 Report

CES 2019 Report

I arrived without any expectation. It’s hardly headline news that high-end audio at CES has been running on fumes in recent years. Would this be the year that showing up would be a waste of time? Turns out, what I found was a show relegated to a shadow of its former self but not quite down for the count. My curiosity was soundly rewarded. I was reminded of the closing line from the classic Western film The Wild Bunch: “It ain’t like it used to be, but it’ll do.” Sandy Gross of GoldenEar Technology wasn’t actively demoing the new Triton …… Read the full article

The 2019 Consumer Electronics Show

It’s no secret that the high-end audio segment of the massive Consumer Electronics Show has been waning for years as the industry has shifted its focus to Munich and the growing juggernaut of AXPONA. But this year’s CES was the death knell. After attending 36 consecutive CES events, this was my last. Nonetheless, it was worth going this year to see and hear some intriguing product introductions. Here are the highlights. In a radical rethinking of the traditional audio-component chassis and user interface, NAD introduced the M10 streaming amplifier.… Read the full article

Audio-Technica AT-VM95C Phono Cartridge

By | December 15th, 2018|Categories: Positive Feedback|Tags: , |

The AT-VM95C is a cheap cartridge. Not merely affordable, not budget-friendly, but downright cheap. It’s $34. I took two people to Starbucks the other day and did more damage. A replacement stylus is $21. What else can you call something priced less than fast food? And, more importantly, should you take it seriously?

Of course you should. Not only because it does its job well, but also because in today’s shitty world, $34 is a lot of money to more people than ever, many of whom love music.… Read the full article

Sumiko Rainier and Olympia cartridges Review

Sumiko Rainier

During the 1980s I had a Sumiko Talisman S sapphire low-output moving coil cartridge, which was a great match for my Sumiko Premier MMT tonearm. It had a beautiful midrange to go along with a rich natural sound. By the time it wore out, that model Talisman  had been continued. I did find a less expensive Talisman A (aluminum) to replace it. I was pleased as the Talisman A was close enough to the Talisman S in performance. Unfortunately, after a few years, the stylus got caught on the turntable felt mat when I was lifting the tonearm at the end of a record and was ruined.

Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Every hobby, by its very nature, runs the constant risk of losing contact with its own foundational intent or purpose. The closeness of specialization can, over time, turn into an abstraction where the tether to that hobby’s original essence is broken. Before the “phile” (lover) realizes it, the abstraction has become the essential. What’s true and valuable has shifted. Microsoft has an interesting TV ad campaign currently airing that features the American hip hop artist/poet Common. The message of this marketing effort, broadly pointing towards the future of artificial intelligence, is interesting less for the ideas being promoted, and more …… Read the full article

2018 New York Audio Show Report

2018 New York Audio Show Report

Overview The history of the New York Audio Show can best be described as rocky. Decades ago, the show was run by Stereophile magazine, and it was a juggernaut. I remember making an annual pilgrimage from Washington, D.C. to the New York Hilton to experience that show’s endless rooms, each packed with lust-worthy gear and ravenous audiophiles. But after Stereophile pulled out for lack of funding, New York languished for years without a major regional show—an unholy state of affairs for one of the country’s largest high-end audio markets.… Read the full article
