At CEDIA 2018, AudioQuest was showcasing a suite of analog and digital cables, tools, and accessories for installers from entry-level to super high premium. CEDIA 2018: Gryphon Audio Designs whisks us away with Joseph Cali

By | September 24th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

During my time in the Magic Bus listening to hi-rez with Jon Whitledge, he mentioned that Phillip O’Hanlon, President of On A Higher Note Audio was in town and had setup one of his legendary rooms at a nearby hotel. Early on day two, I took a break from the show floor and made my way over to the Hilton Bayshore across from the Convention Center. Based on the Facebook event details, I was looking for Presidents Suite 458 and was ready to listen to some Gryphon Audio.… Read the full article

Sometimes big things come in small packages, and in the case of the T+A Series 8, these little boxes deliver.  At CEDIA 2018,  T+A was displaying updates to their Series 8 line, specifically their new MP 8 Multi-Source Player and updated DAC 8 DSD.

The MP 8 Multi-Source Player is positioned as the last source you need, providing a network streamer (wired and wireless Ethernet), Roon, MQA, TIDAL, QOBUZ, Bluetooth, USB Storage, a CD transport (tray is hidden under the display), and for those ham-fans, an old-fashioned FM Tuner.… Read the full article

CEDIA 2018: dCS Bartok first listen

dCS Bartok

Different from most of the industry, dCS products seem to blossom after release, as they receive a stream of hardware, software, and firmware updates over the years. This concept didn’t crystallize in my mind until I spent some quality time with dCS Debussy DAC while I was reviewing the dCS Network Bridge. The dCS Debussy has been around for nearly a decade, but continues to get updates including support for higher sample rates of 384kHz and 2xDSD.

In 2018, dCS will finally replace the very fine dCS Debussy with the new dCS Bartok DAC, which draws a clear heritage from its big brothers dCS Rossini and dCS Vivaldi DACs.… Read the full article

CEDIA 2018: Whitledge Designs Magic Bus

By | September 15th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

A study by Texas A&M found that on an average, an American spends 38 plus hours per year waiting in traffic.  For me, its music that gets me through the grind and takes me to my happy place.

Unfortunatel,y most car audio systems, and even the fancy overpriced audio upgrades from various car manufacturers are disappointing.  Very few, if any car audio systems get me excited (except for the B&W system in the Volvo XC90).

Everything changed when I bumped into Jon Whitledge and stepped into his Magic Bus.… Read the full article

We’re fortunate to get to learn, listen and play with lots of great products.  But sometimes we come across something that surprises us.  In the Roon Labs booth at CEDIA, they had assembled an army of the best streaming DACs for attendees to listen to over Audeze headphones. In that sea of great devices, one stood out from the rest….

CEDIA 2018: Bowers & Wilkins launches updated 600 Series

By | September 10th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

B&W is in a good place… Coming off of their 50th anniversary only 2 years ago, they have now completed the roll-out of many technologies that they established in the B&W 800 D3 series loudspeakers to both the 700 series and the entry-level 600 series loudspeakers.

Over the course of 8 years of R&D for the 800 D3, they found a better material to work with. B&W calls it “Continuum”. It is a woven material, like the Kevlar they used to us, but better. … Read the full article
