LOS ANGELES (PTA) — This year’s T.H.E. SHOW 2019 is bigger, better, and already on track to be the most newsworthy yet. There are over 1,000,000 brands exhibiting here in Long Beach — okay, okay — maybe not a million brands exactly, but 200 brands is definitely twice as many over last year. Which makes T.H.E. SHOW 2019’s event feel every bit like the premier audio show of America’s west coast. Lots of exciting manufacturer debuts are taking place at this year’s show, and we at Part-Time Audiophile are committed to bringing you the most extensive coverage of what’s NEW and out-of-this-world in our little Hi-Fi universe.… Read the full article

Chord introduces Huei phono pre at Munich High-End 2019

By | May 9th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

It might look like it but this is not Chord’s Qutest. It’s not even a DAC. It’s the Kent company’s forthcoming £990 phono stage.

Meet Huei: compatible with MM and MC phono cartridges and wrapped in the same machine-milled aluminum chassis as the Qutest DAC. Any colour you like as long as it’s black. Lining Huei’s front edge, Chord’s signature “polychromatic control spheres” handle microprocessor control of cartridge gain (8 levels) and impedance adjustment (16 settings), plus rumble filter on/off.… Read the full article

F1 Audio, Magico, D’Agostino, Chord, Transparent – AXPONA 2019

F1 Audio, Magico, D’Agostino, Chord

I don’t even know where to begin. The guys from F1 Audio, Magico and D’Agostino aren’t playing a room, they are playing one of the largest open spaces on this convention center campus. There’s no practical explanation for this sounding as full and tight as it does, unless one were to point out the massive dual subwoofers, each weighing in at 575lbs. In the most absurd way, this would make one hell of a bedroom system.

Here’s the thing. F1 Audio is a high-end brick-and-mortar audio store located in Palatine for the Chicagoland area.… Read the full article

This is an article many of you, well mostly the companies actually, always anxiously wait for. This is the article in which we award the best gear of 2018. First up: My own selection!!

2018 Awards – Year overview

It was another great year that flew by even faster than last year. A year in which we somewhat saw of a comeback of desktop / full sized gear. That being said though, we’re still living in a world where DAPs and IEMs are the most used.… Read the full article

Chord Electronics announces GoFigure for Android

By | November 22nd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

Looking for a high-end digital audio player and network streamer? Doubtful that you’d find one that sounds as immersive or as transparent as Chord Electronics’ Mojo-Poly. The Mojo is one of the most detailed-sounding DACs money can buy for less than US$1000. The Poly is a direct-connecting streaming add-on module for the Mojo that offers support for playback via Bluetooth, UPnP, AirPlay and Roon Ready or a microSD card inserted into its side.

Catch up on our Poly preview here and our review here, where we found the Mojo-Poly two-fer to be a highly competent network streamer for home hi-fi racks but a screenless thousand dollar DAP that put competition from Sony and Astell&Kern in the shade.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: Spatial Audio, Linear Tube Audio, ANTICABLE and a Lesson in Value

By | November 22nd, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

At last month’s Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I asked a couple of audio buddies if they’d seen (well, heard) anything interesting at the show. Both of them immediately mentioned the fantastic open-baffle speakers from Spatial Audio, and how they sounded incredible for just four grand per pair. Hmmm, I thought, I’ll have to check them out. But I didn’t—and I was looking everywhere for them. It was the last day of the show, however, and I was tired and my eyes might have been on the blurry side.… Read the full article

A short film about the Chord Qutest

By | November 20th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Value for money isn’t the preserve of inexpensive products — it can exist at any price point. Chord Electronics’ Hugo 2 is a DAC that edges out similarly-priced rivals on detail retrieval and spatial cues to take up residence in a many a two-channel enthusiast’s hi-fi system, seemingly flying in the face of its internal rechargeable battery and high-quality headphone output that give users go-anywhere possibilities. Where we go, Hu-go. That spells Value with a capital V, italicised and emboldened.… Read the full article
