Roon comes to the big screen

By | September 26th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

What do you look at when streaming music? Vinyl gives us a big black spinning disc and cover art. CDs, a booklet. For streaming, front panel displays like those found on the AURALiC Aries G1 or the Naim Uniti Atom, as nice as they are, don’t impress as much as a $35 Google Chromecast’s HDMI output splashed six feet wide across the wall by a projector.

For Roon, we can already tap the Google Chromecast for a room-filling now playing screen but the requisite HDMI splitter’s TOSLINK output – needed to peel off digital audio for a DAC – probably isn’t the lowest in electrical noise or jitter.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: Paying it forward

Nicolas P. writes:

I write in relation to the observations of some of your readers on the pros and cons of WiFi versus wired. Because of the layout of my house and the headache that would be caused setting up a wired network I have no choice but to use WiFi.

I use an Allo USBridge which feeds a Chord Mojo on my main system. The USBridge really allows the Mojo to shine. Because the Allo Sparky has no inbuilt WiFi, I have had to resort to using a dongle.… Read the full article

Wheel love with the Naim Uniti Atom

By | July 13th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

Naim review cliche #1: to headline the article with the pun-heavy “What’s in a Naim?”. It’s as tired as David Byrne features topped with “Still Making Sense”; a well-worn wink at the ex-Talking Head frontman’s most well-known eighties release (Stop Making Sense).

I’m as guilty as the next guy, headlining my coverage of the Naim Uniti Atom and Nova’s 2016 US debut with – you guessed it – “What’s in a Naim?”. Never again (is what I swore the time before).… Read the full article

Roon expands to include Chromecast

Roon Labs expands to cover Google Chromecast devices.

Pretty decent headline, there. I’ve been mucking about with Google Home (and smart speakers from some other vendors) and I have to say, those devices aren’t terrible. Yes, that’s a bit of faint praise, but I think we’re on the edge of something interesting here, and that makes me think it’s a smart move that Roon is making.

More on this soon as I dig in, but for now, here’s the press release:

New York, NY – July 6th, 2018 – Streaming juggernaut Roon Labs announces the ability to stream from Roon to all Chromecast products with its new release.

Roon. v1.3. v1.4. v1.5…v1.6? Not quite. At least, not yet. The next software update to roll out to users is a point release but with a knockout new feature: streaming support for Google Chromecast devices.

From Build 333 of Roon v1.5, the Google Home, the Google Home Mini, the Google Home Max, the Chromecast Audio and the Chromecast (Gen 1, Gen 2, and Ultra) will all function as Roon endpoints to join AirPlay streamers, Sonos boxes, the KEF LS50 Wireless and Roon Ready devices.Read the full article
