Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Objectivity and the Abstract Truth

Every hobby, by its very nature, runs the constant risk of losing contact with its own foundational intent or purpose. The closeness of specialization can, over time, turn into an abstraction where the tether to that hobby’s original essence is broken. Before the “phile” (lover) realizes it, the abstraction has become the essential. What’s true and valuable has shifted. Microsoft has an interesting TV ad campaign currently airing that features the American hip hop artist/poet Common. The message of this marketing effort, broadly pointing towards the future of artificial intelligence, is interesting less for the ideas being promoted, and more …… Read the full article

2018 New York Audio Show Report

Overview The history of the New York Audio Show can best be described as rocky. Decades ago, the show was run by Stereophile magazine, and it was a juggernaut. I remember making an annual pilgrimage from Washington, D.C. to the New York Hilton to experience that show’s endless rooms, each packed with lust-worthy gear and ravenous audiophiles. But after Stereophile pulled out for lack of funding, New York languished for years without a major regional show—an unholy state of affairs for one of the country’s largest high-end audio markets.… Read the full article

How to Listen to Stereo

How to Listen to Stereo

Stereo in its most basic form is a robust medium. One can hear the ancient demos of ping-pong games and trains traveling from left to right or right to left on cheap computer speakers sitting on a glass tabletop. But if you want to hear the real sonic glories that stereo is capable of—the insight into the original recording venue, the sense of expansive space, the depth and width of image, the focus and location of instruments, and all the rest—then you need not only good equipment but also very careful setup of the system in the listening room.… Read the full article

Marantz Is Back: 40th-Anniversary Marantz KI Ruby Series

Now under the auspices of Sound United (along with Denon, Classé Audio, and other brands), Marantz is back on the map. The classic audio company has been celebrating its 40thanniversary this year with recent launches of its KI Ruby limited-edition series components in Europe and the U.S. Along with a number of (mostly) European-based audio journalists and a handful of sales folks, I had the good fortune to attend a special launch event in Amsterdam held at an incredible venue: the renowned Concertgebouw concert hall.… Read the full article

Most Significant New Products VAC Statement 450i iQ integrated amplifier This new and state-of-the-art Statement 450i iQ integrated amp from Kevin Hayes of Valve Amplification Company (VAC) makes a statement indeed and epitomizes extreme audio. RMAF 2018 – Electronics Under $15k

This was my first Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in three years, as well as my first gander at the venerable Marriott Denver Tech Center following its much-needed facelift. Ironically, as it turns out, even a multi-million-dollar renovation couldn’t hold on to RMAF. Next year, the show is off to a sparkling new venue at the Gaylord Rockies Resort in nearby Aurora, CO. Now this place not only looks spectacular but word has it that sonically the rooms easily surpass those at the old DTC (which doesn’t set an especially high bar, I’m afraid).… Read the full article

2019 High-End Audio Buyer’s Guide: DACs

Cambridge Audio DacMagic XS $74 About the size of a small box of wooden matches, the Cambridge DacMagic XS is one of the smallest and lightest portable DACs reviewer Steven Stone has seen. It measures approximately 2 1/8" by 1 1/8" by 3/8" and weighs under 4 oz. On one end you’ll find a micro-USB input and on the other end is a 3.5mm stereo output. Although it doesn’t handle every audio format, and isn’t DSD-capable, the DacMagic XS delivers a lot of functionality and sonic goodness for under $200.… Read the full article
