June 11, 2019 – A beyond-cool look at the world of high-end audio design for passionate collectors, obsessive audiophiles, and design fans At a time when sales of vinyl records have hit a 25-year high, and analog technologies are providing the kind of extraordinary audio experiences that our increasingly digital world has started to remove, Hi-Fi is essential reading. Building a Listening Room

Building a dedicated space for music listening is the ultimate commitment to the hobby. It’s expensive and complex, and when you’re finished there’s no guarantee that the room will sound good. But if you take that plunge and the stars align, a room specifically designed for optimizing sound quality can allow a high-end system to realize its greatest potential. I recently realized a lifelong goal of building a serious listening room and will share my experience with you. Although I had built two homes before with dedicated rooms, this one is more ambitious.… Read the full article

MUNICH 2019: Sources and Cables

MUNICH 2019: Sources and Cables

Munich High End is undoubtedly the largest high-end audio extravaganza in the world. It not only featured some of the best products recently displayed at AXPONA Chicago (another incredible show!), but also a wide array of products thus far unseen on North American shores. I’ve never set eyes on so many turntables, horn loudspeakers, and exotic products in one venue! My “beat” this year was sources and cables—essentially every room at the show. As this was a daunting, if not impossible, task, I focused on those sources and cables I could actually hear in systems, rather than those on static …… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019: Electronics

It’s no secret that AXPONA has been experiencing a growth spurt. Last year marked a move to a new venue, the Renaissance Schaumberg Convention Center Hotel, in Schaumberg, IL, outside Chicago. In scope, attendance, and number of exhibits, it is giving RMAF in Denver a run for the money (though that show will also be held in a new, much larger venue this year, the Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center). Although attendance was strong and the vibe positive, AXPONA is one helluva huge show.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2019: Digital Sources

AXPONA 2019: Digital Sources

Nearly halfway through covering the analog side of AXPONA, I switched hats to covering digital sources. You may ask yourself, why is the person versed in our hobby about analog covering digital? Well that is a good question. First, I’m pinch-hitting for my colleague, Steven Stone, who wasn’t available at the time of the show (be well, my friend). Second, I’m still looking for a permanent digital playback solution to complement my analog sources (vinyl and tape), and this exploration allows a brief look at what’s currently available.… Read the full article

Chord Electronics Qutest DAC

Chord Electronics Qutest DAC

If we were to rate audiophile firms on the basis of the strength of their brand identities, Chord would be near the top of the list. The letter Q has figured prominently in the nomenclature of many of their creations; this notion is either clever or quaint, depending on your mood. The company’s latest, the Qutest, which replaces the 2Qute and, priced right at $1895, is the middle child of Chord’s DAC lineup. It also arguably offers Chord’s best value, as it includes almost all of the digital “special sauce” found in the maker’s Hugo and Dave models, but in …… Read the full article
