SunValley SV-Pre1616D Tube Line Stage Kit Review

Classic Style.  Classic Circuit.  Classic Sound?
By Steve Graham

SunValley – that’s the way they spell it, without a space between the Sun and the Valley – is a division of the huge Toyota corporation, manufacturer of motor vehicles.  I suspect there is a member of the Toyoda family (yes, Toyoda is the correct family name of Toyota’s founder) or that one of the senior vice presidents of the corporation is a tube-loving audiophile.  Anything that brings more tube gear to us geeky audiophiles is fine with me.… Read the full article

Coming Soon: Sun Valley SV-Pre1616d

All Tube Line Stage Kit Review

by Steve Graham

Long promised and almost ready for prime time.  A Japanese line stage kit from, would you believe it, Toyota?  It’s true. Toyota, the vehicle manufacturer, also dabbles in tube audio kits.  Sun Valley is distributed in North America by our old friend Victor Kung. https://www.vkmusic.ca/

I snagged this delightfully retro-looking kit from Victor, aka the busiest man in audio, and will be assembling it from the Japanese instructions. Read the full article

Or, “Solder Slingin’ Steve Rides Again”

By Steve Graham

Can success breed success?  Like the efficacious DIY Phono Stage from 2018I’m going have another go at a DIY project. This time it will be an EL84 push-pull integrated/power amplifier.

The build will start with the Simple Push Pull board available from Tubelab.com. Of course, buying a board is the easy part.  A chassis, tubes, transformers, jacks, speaker terminals, resistors, capacitors and all the other bits are needed.Read the full article

Yet Another 866A Video

By | August 27th, 2019|Categories: ItisHifi - Vintage|Tags: , |

This time a time lapse. Very strange not what I expected to see. I was surprised by the flicker rate because in our time they were solid blue.

My friend Chris brought over another piece of cool test equipment. This is not just an ohm meter but a MEGOHMMETER!!!!! Great googlie mooglie!! I’ve been honing my DIY skills repairing old test equipment. We have been through a stack of Sound Technology test gear. Next on the list may be a few old scopes. Not sure when we will get to this one but it sure is cool.

Monolithic Power Supply – Where There Is Smoke There Is Smoke

By | August 12th, 2019|Categories: ItisHifi - Vintage|Tags: , |

Chris and I have beeen working on this power supply off and on for a while. We are almost there and today we let her rip two 6D22S and two 866A tubes. It weighs almost 90lbs. Sadly the vintage ginormous power transformer started smoking and even stranger the 866A insulators were lightning up. If the video plays Look close for smoke and sparks. Fortunately we have a few transformers we can swap. We we were hitting 1kv and around  300ma+. Very fun we definatly went out for beers to celebrate!… Read the full article

Perky Tubes Protrude
Not-For-Profit MM/MC Phono Stage

The DIY bug has bitten Steve Graham, again.  And he gets in a bit deeper than he bargained for, again.

Warning: This will get a bit wordy.  Vinylphiles and/or tubephiles probably won’t mind.  Digiphiles won’t likely be reading this, but they are most welcome to.

Have you ever noticed the almost carnal look on the face of a tube-loving audiophile when he, it’s always a he, first claps eyes on an attractive tube amp? … Read the full article

Desire In Glass

Two Upcoming Tube Fests

by Steve Graham

Tube Fest No. 1

A friend and I decided to sell off the majority of our collections of vintage and classic European tubes.  Part of the process was educating our customers about the intertwined and labyrinthian nature of tube production in this golden age of tube making.  It occurred to me that a primer on a pair of the most popular small-signal tubes would be of use.  A soon to be posted article will be an introduction to the minutia of the 6DJ8/ECC88 and 12AX7/ECC83 tubes produced in Europe and Great Britain. … Read the full article

The C/H/E Files (Classic/Heritage/Exotic): The C.L.E.A.R. 834L: Rescuing an Audio Classic

Steve Graham rejuvenates a neglected EAR preamp.

Part 1 of a 2-part series.

Those familiar with the EAR-Yoshino marque will wonder if the C.L.E.A.R. 834L pictured above is a real EAR component.  The answer is yes, basically. But first:

Most audiophiles have heard of Esoteric Audio Research (EAR), the British hifi and recording equipment manufacturer.  Like so many equipment manufacturers in the specialist audio field, EAR is built on the vision of one man, Tim de Paravicini.  … Read the full article
