Munich High-End 2019: ELAC’s Carina are JET-powered!

By | April 20th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

JETpacked. The latest loudspeaker to designs to spill from ELAC Americas are the 2-way Carina BS243.4 standmount and the 2.5-way 241.4 floorstander, both of which take strong cues from ELAC Germany‘s speaker designs to feature the company’s JET folded ribbon tweeter.

According to ELAC, the JET tweeter offers “lightning-fast response”, “wide dynamic range”, “minimal distortion”, “lots of headroom” and a “wider frequency range than conventional dome tweeters”.

In the BS243.4 , the JET tweeter is married to a single 13.5 cm aluminium mid/bass driver for a 2-way design.… Read the full article

A short film about the Mytek Brooklyn Bridge & AMP

By | March 27th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

Designed in Brooklyn, made in Poland, Mytek has removed the WCK IN/OUT and AES/EBU connectors from the rear of the Brooklyn DAC+ (review here) to make way for a 24bit/192kHz/DSD64-capable streaming board and a third Brooklyn: the Brooklyn Bridge (US$2995/€2995, previewed here).

The Brooklyn Bridge connects to a home network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi using the associated mControl smartphone app (iOS/Android), which in turn gives us direct access to cloud services – Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer and Spotify Connect – as well as local UPnP/DLNA and Roon servers.… Read the full article

A short film about the ELAC Navis ARB-51

By | March 14th, 2019|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , |

Instead of activating ELAC’s Uni-Fi series of passive loudspeakers (see here and here) celebrity loudspeaker designer Andrew Jones created an all-new active loudspeaker called Navis — formerly Argo.

“The original name, in full, was Argo-Navis. This based on a constellation and in keeping with nautical themes that we have chosen for recent naming conventions. It is in recognition of ELAC’s headquarters in Kiel Germany, an important sailing centre. Hence Vela (sail) and Carina (keel). We used Argo for short but were challenged by someone registering the Argo name after we started using it.Read the full article

Elac Carina Bookshelf Loudspeaker

A new speaker line from Andrew Jones

It is now a sight that the general audio press is becoming more familiar with, but still enjoys at much as the first release (at least for this individual). Andrew Jones and the Elac team crowded into a listening room talking about a new loudspeaker series. At CES this year its a new take on the formula with the addition of a JET folded ribbon tweeter called Carina.

The Carina series starts with 5″ bookshelf for $1.2k (per pair) and includes a center ($849) and floorstander ($1.2 each).… Read the full article

Stand in the place where you live

“Stand in the place where you live
Now face north
Think about direction
Wonder why you haven’t before”

– R.E.M.

In the days sandwiched by Christmas and New Year, we find ourselves in the anteroom of the year ahead, looking back on the year soon to close. We sit between the future and the past.

Standmount loudspeakers coming my way in 2018 were evenly split between passive and active designs. From the former camp, the Harbeth Compact 7ES3, the ProAC Tablette 10 (and its Signature variant) plus a new found favourite in the DENSO Ten Eclipse 510Z MKII.… Read the full article

Darko.Audio podcast #12 – Small speakers

By | December 3rd, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Sometimes we want steak, other times only sushi will do.

And so it goes with loudspeakers: we might lust for (full-range) floorstanders but either our room’s acoustics and/or our aesthetic sensibilities say otherwise: only standmounts can be accommodated.

Like food, it’s better to have too little than too much.

In our latest episode of the Darko.Audio podcast, Jeff Dorgay of TONEAudio and I discuss small loudspeakers with our informal chat romping through the following products (and more):

47 Labs Lens

RMAF 2018: A Critical Eye

By | November 10th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I have completely bought into the music reproduction industry ever since I heard the difference between lamp cord as speaker wire and Monster brand wire oh so many years ago. Yes, I built Heathkit and Eico kits when I was a teenager in the middle 60’s, but really had no idea what was really going on.

During this time I was developing my ear for music. Big band and classical when I was alone, and rock when friends came over, as well as getting an inkling of how the music sounded different through different types of components and wire.… Read the full article

Andrew Jones must be stopped!

By | October 11th, 2018|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , , |

“Dear John. I don’t know about you but I’m becoming heartily sick of Andrew Jones. His US$20,000+ loudspeaker designs for TAD were great and all – and the US$129 Pioneer SP-BS22-LR was a cute attempt to snag entry-level buyers – but ever since he decamped to ELAC a few years back, I can’t open a web browser for fear of seeing his beaming smile and man-of-the-people disposition staring right back at me. The Debut Series. The Uni-Fi Series. The Uni-Fi Slim.Read the full article

Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speakers

A Brand New Debut

by Venoth Nair

The first iteration of Elac’s Debut series shook the foundations of what can be achieved with a budget speaker range. The original lineup of speakers was able to realize superlative levels of performance from a modest price allowing it to compete with speakers which are much more costly. What stands out with the series is the focus on maximizing what can be attained with the set limitations and this was something done superbly with the original Debut series.… Read the full article
