Welcome to something new we’re going to try here on PTA thanks to our friend Wynn Wong of Wynn Audio in Richmond Hill, Ontario. I’m going to be curating a new list every month featuring different categories of gear that I think you – our readers – have to hear under any circumstances you can arrange: beg, borrow, steal, drive for hours, hop a train, take a plane… you get what I’m saying. Price will not be a factor, with individual pieces on each list reflecting a spectrum of what I feel is the best.… Read the full article
A very unique room as Shindo and Auditorium 23 are not often seen at audio shows, so this weekend feels like a welcomed blessing. Also making a very rare appearance is J.C. Verdier which in some regards hasn’t been at a show in over 10 years. Their La Platine Nouvelle turntable was a remarkable piece of hifi gear to behold. Uncommon was its thread drive motor system and pressurized oil suspension for its 14kg platter.
First on deck was Jennifer Warnes title track “The Well” from The Well which features Doyle Bramhall Jr., who in my mind is one of the underrated musical geniuses of our the modern era.… Read the full article
This is a monthly series of album reviews I will be doing for DVL Audio here in Canada. As much as I’d heard about the High End Show in Munich none of it really prepared me for the level of polish, and professionalism that the event exudes. This is an order of magnitude different from anything I’ve encountered in North America. The closest would be the Montreal Salon Audio, but in Munich it is on a scale that one must experience to truly appreciate. This level of controlled audiophile chaos is intoxicating.… Read the full article
High-efficiency speakers and tubes, that’s what you’re supposed to do, it’s what we’re taught. I should know, that’s my jam. Jonathan Halpern of Tone Imports, and John DeVore of DeVore Fidelity are like the peanut butter to my jam; we’re all of a school that is single-ended triode and 96dB heavy on homework in its curriculum. So what was I suppose to make of DeVore’s O/93 two-way floorstanders ($8,400 USD) being juiced by solid state amplification that Halpern had supplied?… Read the full article
