Fraunhofer IIS introduces SDK for JPEG XS image coding

Fraunhofer IIS presents its new Software Development Kit (SDK) with optimized functions to code images with the new JPEG XS codec. JPEG XS is suited for use in production environments where high resolution image data of up to 8k/60p UHD video must be transferred via Ethernet. At the IBC Show in Amsterdam, the coding specialists of Fraunhofer IIS are demonstrating the JPEG XS codec as complete live stream with real-time playback. Increasing amounts of permanent data with high resolution and high dynamic range will briefly swamp the transmission capabilities over long-distance cable lengths in studio environments, and while using existing coaxial cabling solutions.… Read the full article

IBC 2018: Fraunhofer IIS and Vewd Demonstrate MPEG-H Audio Support in HbbTV

At the IBC Show in Amsterdam, Fraunhofer IIS and Vewd, the world’s largest smart TV OTT software provider, will showcase a HbbTV demo that includes DVB DASH streaming on a set-top box running Vewd Core and Vewd HbbTV Module with MPEG-H Audio support, as defined in the latest HbbTV 2.0.2 specification. From Microphone to Speaker – Fraunhofer IIS Presents MPEG-H Audio Real-Time Chain at IBC

At the IBC Show, taking place from September 14 – 18, 2018 in in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase a complete production and transmission chain for the MPEG-H Audio system at booth #B80 in hall 8. The equipment includes MPEG­-H monitoring units for real-time monitoring and content authoring, postproduction tools, MPEG­-H Audio real-time broadcast encoders, as well as decoders in professional and consumer receivers. Live production: MPEG-H-enabled hardware devices for live production are the first section of the chain, including a LAWO Audio production console, as well as the Jünger Audio MMA and Linear Acoustic AMS authoring and monitoring systems, which are able to generate the metadata “on the fly” during live broadcasting.… Read the full article

Fraunhofer IIS Showcasing Radio Mitre xHE-AAC Live Stream at CES

At CES 2018, Fraunhofer IIS booth visitors can check out the benefits of xHE-AAC (Extended HE-AAC), the most advanced audio codec for digital radio and streaming, by listening to a 16 kbit/s livestream from Buenos Aires-based Radio Mitre. The station, founded in 1925 and part of the Grupo Clarín media house, is the most popular radio station in Argentina. Tests conducted by Radio Mitre in and around Buenos Aires showed that the use of xHE-AAC – compared to HE-AAC v2 – reduced streaming downtime in areas with bad network connectivity by approximately 60%, and also reduced the average number of playout interruptions.… Read the full article

At the 2017 IBC show in Amsterdam, two new products including Fraunhofer technologies for digital radio were introduced: the first Software Defined Radio (SDR) digital receiver for consumers, and a new DAB monitoring receiver for transmitter, content and remote-coverage monitoring. Titus II multi standard digital radio receiver Titus SDR, PantronX, Jasmin-Infotech, TWR, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS have teamed up to create Titus II, the world’s first consumer Software Defined Radio (SDR) digital receiver (pictured above). Fraunhofer and bcom present VR Comedy Show “Vaudeville” in MPEG-H Spatial Audio based on the VRIF Draft Guidelines

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, the world-renowned experts in audio and media technologies, and the Hypermedia innovators from the French Research and Technology Institute b<>com have teamed up at IBC 2017 to showcase an end-to-end spatial audio system for production, delivery, playback and rendering of Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) MPEG-H Audio, the international standard for immersive audio. The first virtual reality experience produced with this toolchain is the episodic VR comedy show “Vaudeville” from French VR studio DVGroup. Fraunhofer IIS and Analog Devices showcase MPEG-H Audio and Fraunhofer upHear® Immersive Soundbar Virtualizer at CEDIA 2017

Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and Analog Devices, Inc., have unveiled software technology at CEDIA 2017 designed to significantly improve the immersive sound reproduction capabilities of consumer playback devices. The new offering is a reference implementation of Fraunhofer upHear® soundbar processing with MPEG-H decoding and rendering on an Analog Devices digital signal processor (DSP). It is the first commercial implementation of this software, which is fully integrated into the Analog Devices audio framework. International Conference on Semantic Audio at Fraunhofer IIS

The Audio Engineering Society’s (AES) International Conference on Semantic Audio took place on June 22-24 in Erlangen, Germany at Fraunhofer IIS. The conference included technical discussions along with demos, poster sessions and a few cultural and entertaining activities every evening. Attendees received a pre-conference in-depth introduction with three tutorials on music performance analysis, sonic interactions for virtual reality applications and phase reconstruction from magnitude spectrograms. While the tutorials were not mandatory for attendance, almost all the delegates joined the sessions. Alexander Lerch and Stefan Weinzierl (“Music Performance Analysis”) explained how semantic analysis could be applied to support learning a musical instrument by providing feedback on the accuracy of a performance with respect to rhythm, pitch and tone.… Read the full article
